Each
message is dynamically allocated so the uhid_device structure does not get
too big.

uhid_queue() adds a message to the buffer.
shmem: reduce pagefault lock contention

I'm running a shmem pagefault test case (see attached file) under a 64 CPU
system. Profile shows shmem_inode_info->lock is heavily contented and
100% CPUs time are trying to get the lock. In the pagefault (no swap)
case, shmem_getpage gets the lock twice, the last one is avoidable if we
prealloc a page so we could reduce one time of locking. This is what
below patch does.

The result of the test case:
2.6.35-rc3: ~20s
2.6.35-rc3 + patch: ~12s
so this is 40% improvement.

One might argue if we could have better locking for shmem. But even shmem
is lockless, the pagefault will soon have pagecache lock heavily contented
because shmem must add new page to pagecache. So before we have better
locking for pagecache, improving shmem locking doesn't have too much
improvement. I did a similar pagefault test against a ramfs file, the
test result is ~10.5s.

[akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix comment, clean up code layout, elimintate code duplication]
Signed-off-by: Shaohua Li <shaohua.li@intel.com>
Cc: Hugh Dickins <hughd@google.com>
Cc: "Zhang, Yanmin" <yanmin.zhang@intel.com>
Cc: Tim Chen <tim.c.chen@linux.intel.com>
Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org>
Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
"

This is done by
refusing to build if the type of its first argument is a pointer to a
struct page.

The real kunmap_atomic() is renamed to kunmap_atomic_notypecheck()
(which is what you would call in case for some strange reason calling it
with a pointer to a struct page is not incorrect in your code).

The previous version of this patch was compile tested on x86-64.

[1] http://ozlabs.org/~rusty/index.cgi/tech/2008-04-01.html
[2] In these cases, it is at level 5, "Do it right or it will always
    break at runtime."
[3] At least mips and powerpc look very similar, and sparc also seems to
share a common ancestor with both; there seems to be quite some
degree of copy-and-paste coding here. The include/asm/highmem.h file
for these three archs mention x86 CPUs at its top.
[4] http://ozlabs.org/~rusty/index.cgi/tech/2008-03-30.html
[5] As an aside, could someone tell me why mn10300 uses unsigned long as
the first parameter of kunmap_atomic() instead of void *?

Signed-off-by: Cesar Eduardo Barros <cesarb@cesarb.net>
Cc: Russell King <linux@arm.linux.org.uk> (arch/arm)
Cc: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> (arch/mips)
Cc: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> (arch/frv, arch/mn10300)
Cc: Koichi Yasutake <yasutake.koichi@jp.panasonic.com> (arch/mn10300)
Cc: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca> (arch/parisc)
Cc: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> (arch/parisc)
Cc: "James E.J.
msm: kgsl: Optimize page_alloc allocations

User memory needs to be zeroed out before it is sent to the user.
To do this, the kernel maps the page, memsets it to zero and then
unmaps it. By virtue of mapping it, this forces us to flush the
dcache to ensure cache coherency between kernel and user mappings.
Originally, the page_alloc loop was using GFP_ZERO (which does a
map, memset, and unmap for each individual page) and then we were
additionally calling flush_dcache_page() for each page killing us
on performance. It is far more efficient, especially for large
allocations (> 1MB), to allocate the pages without GFP_ZERO and
then to vmap the entire allocation, memset it to zero, flush the
cache and then unmap. This process is slightly slower for very
small allocations, but only by a few microseconds, and is well
within the margin of acceptability. In all, the new scheme is
faster than the default for all sizes greater than 16k, and is
almost 4X faster for 2MB and 4MB allocations which are common for
textures and very large buffer objects.

The downside is that if there isn't enough vmalloc room for the
allocation that we are forced to fallback to a slow page by
page memset/flush, but this should happen rarely (if at all) and
is only included for completeness.

CRs-Fixed: 372638
Signed-off-by: Jordan Crouse <jcrouse@codeaurora.org>
(cherry picked from commit 89bd323f4b9c4c2382e5361c52f25f86db330583)

Change-Id: I160d23c25d7cae7b9d432f9f79945e01bcbe89e9
Signed-off-by: Sridhar Gujje <sgujje@codeaurora.org>

panic: Fix a possible deadlock in panic()

panic_lock is meant to ensure that panic processing takes
place only on one cpu; if any of the other cpus encounter
a panic, they will spin waiting to be shut down.

However, this causes a regression in this scenario:

1. Cpu 0 encounters a panic and acquires the panic_lock
and proceeds with the panic processing.
2. There is an interrupt on cpu 0 that also encounters
an error condition and invokes panic.
3. This second invocation fails to acquire the panic_lock
and enters the infinite while loop in panic_smp_self_stop.

Thus all panic processing is stopped, and the cpu is stuck
for eternity in the while(1) inside panic_smp_self_stop.

To address this, disable local interrupts with
local_irq_disable before acquiring the panic_lock. This will
prevent interrupt handlers from executing during the panic
processing, thus avoiding this particular problem.

Signed-off-by: Vikram Mulukutla <markivx@codeaurora.org>
(cherry picked from commit dd58afef43357f265e803c317bbaa91f8c440663)

Change-Id: I5f7ebcf2a028df265a57922b6c959e686a82026a
Signed-off-by: Swetha Basineni <sbasin@codeaurora.org>
"
