      "message": "CONFIG_HIGHPTE vs. sub-page page tables.\n\nBackground: I\u0027ve implemented 1K/2K page tables for s390.  These sub-page\npage tables are required to properly support the s390 virtualization\ninstruction with KVM.  The SIE instruction requires that the page tables\nhave 256 page table entries (pte) followed by 256 page status table entries\n(pgste).  The pgstes are only required if the process is using the SIE\ninstruction.  The pgstes are updated by the hardware and by the hypervisor\nfor a number of reasons, one of them is dirty and reference bit tracking.\nTo avoid wasting memory the standard pte table allocation should return\n1K/2K (31/64 bit) and 2K/4K if the process is using SIE.\n\nProblem: Page size on s390 is 4K, page table size is 1K or 2K.  That means\nthe s390 version for pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a struct\npage.  Trouble is that with the CONFIG_HIGHPTE feature on x86 pte_alloc_one\ncannot return a pointer to a pte either, since that would require more than\n32 bit for the return value of pte_alloc_one (and the pte * would not be\naccessible since its not kmapped).\n\nSolution: The only solution I found to this dilemma is a new typedef: a\npgtable_t.  For s390 pgtable_t will be a (pte *) - to be introduced with a\nlater patch.  For everybody else it will be a (struct page *).  The\nadditional problem with the initialization of the ptl lock and the\nNR_PAGETABLE accounting is solved with a constructor pgtable_page_ctor and\na destructor pgtable_page_dtor.  The page table allocation and free\nfunctions need to call these two whenever a page table page is allocated or\nfreed.  pmd_populate will get a pgtable_t instead of a struct page pointer.\n To get the pgtable_t back from a pmd entry that has been installed with\npmd_populate a new function pmd_pgtable is added.       "message": "[POWERPC] 4xx: Fix TLB 0 problem with CONFIG_SERIAL_TEXT_DEBUG\n\nRight now TLB entry 0 ist used as UART0 mapping for the early debug\noutput (via CONFIG_SERIAL_TEXT_DEBUG). This causes problems when many\nTLB\u0027s get used upon Linux bootup (e.g. while PCIe scanning behind\nbridges and/or switches on 440SPe platforms). This will overwrite the\nTLB 0 entry and further debug output\u0027s may crash/hang the system.\n\nThis patch moves the early debug UART0 TLB entry from 0 to 62 as done\nin arch/powerpc. This way it is in the \"pinned\" area and will not get\noverwritten.       "message": "[POWERPC] ppc405 Fix arithmatic rollover bug when memory size under 16M\n\nmmu_mapin_ram() loops over total_lowmem to setup page tables.  However, if\ntotal_lowmem is less that 16M, the subtraction rolls over and results in\na number just under 4G (because total_lowmem is an unsigned value).\n\nThis patch rejigs the loop from countup to countdown to eliminate the\nbug.\n\nSpecial thanks to Magnus Hjorth who wrote the original patch to fix this\nbug.       "message": "[POWERPC] 4xx: Deal with 44x virtually tagged icache\n\nThe 44x family has an interesting \"feature\" which is a virtually\ntagged instruction cache (yuck !). So far, we haven\u0027t dealt with\nit properly, which means we\u0027ve been mostly lucky or people didn\u0027t\nreport the problems, unless people have been running custom patches\nin their distro...\n\nThis is an attempt at fixing it properly.       "message": "[POWERPC] 4xx: Fix 4xx flush_tlb_page()\n\nOn 4xx CPUs, the current implementation of flush_tlb_page() uses\na low level _tlbie() assembly function that only works for the\ncurrent PID. Thus, invalidations caused by, for example, a COW\nfault triggered by get_user_pages() from a different context will\nnot work properly, causing among other things, gdb breakpoints\nto fail.\n\nThis patch adds a \"pid\" argument to _tlbie() on 4xx processors,\nand uses it to flush entries in the right context.       "message": "[PATCH] mm: use symbolic names instead of indices for zone initialisation\n\nArch-independent zone-sizing is using indices instead of symbolic names to\noffset within an array related to zones (max_zone_pfns).  The unintended\nimpact is that ZONE_DMA and ZONE_NORMAL is initialised on powerpc instead\nof ZONE_DMA and ZONE_HIGHMEM when CONFIG_HIGHMEM is set.  As a result, the\nthe machine fails to boot but will boot with CONFIG_HIGHMEM turned off.\n\nThe following patch properly initialises the max_zone_pfns[] array and uses\nsymbolic names instead of indices in each architecture using\narch-independent zone-sizing.  Two users have successfully booted their\npowerpcs with it (one an ibook G4).  It has also been boot tested on x86,\nx86_64, ppc64 and ia64.  Please merge for 2.6.19-rc2.\n\nCredit to Benjamin Herrenschmidt for identifying the bug and rolling the\nfirst fix. I\u0027ve verified the patch on\nia64, x86_64 and x86.\n\nAdditional discussion:\n\nSeveral architectures, including x86, can not support write-only mappings.\nThe pte for x86 reserves a single bit for protection and its two states are\nread only or read/write.  Thus, write only is not supported in h/w.\n\nCurrently, if i \u0027mmap\u0027 a page write-only, the first read attempt on that page\ncreates a page fault and will SEGV.  That check is enforced in\narch/blah/mm/fault.c.  However, if i first write that page it will fault in\nand the pte will be set to read/write.  Thus, any subsequent reads to the page\nwill succeed.  It is this inconsistency in behavior that this patch is\nattempting to address.  Furthermore, if the page is swapped out, and then\nbrought back the first read will also cause a SEGV.  Thus, any arbitrary read\non a page can potentially result in a SEGV.\n\nAccording to the SuSv3 spec, \"if the application requests only PROT_WRITE, the\nimplementation may also allow read access.\" Also as mentioned, some\narchtectures, such as alpha, shown above already take the approach that i am\nsuggesting.\n\nThe counter-argument to this raised by Arjan, is that the kernel is enforcing\nthe write only mapping the best it can given the h/w limitations.  This is\ntrue, however Alan Cox, and myself would argue that the inconsitency in\nbehavior, that is applications can sometimes work/sometimes fails is highly\nundesireable.       "message": "[PATCH] mm: init_mm without ptlock\n\nFirst step in pushing down the page_table_lock.  init_mm.page_table_lock has\nbeen used throughout the architectures (usually for ioremap): not to serialize\nkernel address space allocation (that\u0027s usually vmlist_lock), but because\npud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel expect caller holds it.\n\nReverse that: don\u0027t lock or unlock init_mm.page_table_lock in any of the\narchitectures; instead rely on pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel to take\nand drop it when allocating a new one, to check lest a racing task already\ndid.  Similarly no page_table_lock in vmalloc\u0027s map_vm_area.\n\nSome temporary ugliness in __pud_alloc and __pmd_alloc: since they also handle\nuser mms, which are converted only by a later patch, for now they have to lock\ndifferently according to whether or not it\u0027s init_mm.\n\nIf sources get muddled, there\u0027s a danger that an arch source taking\ninit_mm.page_table_lock will be mixed with common source also taking it (or\nneither take it).       "message": "[PATCH] ppc32: Kill init on unhandled synchronous signals\n\nThis is a patch that I have had in my tree for ages.  If init causes\nan exception that raises a signal, such as a SIGSEGV, SIGILL or\nSIGFPE, and it hasn\u0027t registered a handler for it, we don\u0027t deliver\nthe signal, since init doesn\u0027t get any signals that it doesn\u0027t have a\nhandler for.  But that means that we just return to userland and\ngenerate the same exception again immediately.       "message": "[PATCH] 8xx: avoid \"dcbst\" misbehaviour with unpopulated TLB\n\nThe proposed _tlbie call at update_mmu_cache() is safe because:\n\nAddresses for which update_mmu_cache() gets invocated are never inside the\nstatic kernel virtual mapping, meaning that there is no risk for the\n_tlbie() here to be thrashing the pinned entry, as Dan suspected.\n\nThe intermediate TLB state in which this bug can be triggered is not\nvisible by userspace or any other contexts, except the page fault handling\npath.  So there is no need to worry about userspace dcbxxx users.\n\nThe other solution to this is to avoid dcbst misbehaviour in the first\nplace, which involves changing in-kernel \"dcbst\" callers to use 8xx\nspecific SPR\u0027s.\n\nSummary:\n\nOn 8xx, cache control instructions (particularly \"dcbst\" from\nflush_dcache_icache) fault as write operation if there is an unpopulated\nTLB entry for the address in question. These functions are usually\nin an init section and so can\u0027t be called after the init pages are\nfreed.  Now that the cpu bringup code can be called after the system\nis booted (for hotplug cpu) we can get the situation where the\nprogress function can be called after boot.
