The autoinstaller feature, for\n example, which determines if your system has a \"good\" version of a\n driver (i.e. if the one provided by DKMS has a newer verson than that\n provided by the kernel package installed), and to automatically compile\n and install a newer version if DKMS has it but your kernel doesn\u0027t yet\n have that version.\n\nb) Because sysadmins manually, or with tools like DKMS, can switch out\n modules on the file system, you can\u0027t count on \u0027modinfo foo.ko\u0027, which\n looks at /lib/modules/${kernelver}/... actually matching what is loaded\n into the kernel already.
