      "message": "revert \"procfs: provide stack information for threads\" and its fixup commits\n\nOriginally, commit d899bf7b (\"procfs: provide stack information for\nthreads\") attempted to introduce a new feature for showing where the\nthreadstack was located and how many pages are being utilized by the\nstack.\n\nCommit c44972f1 (\"procfs: disable per-task stack usage on NOMMU\") was\napplied to fix the NO_MMU case.\n\nCommit 89240ba0 (\"x86, fs: Fix x86 procfs stack information for threads on\n64-bit\") was applied to fix a bug in ia32 executables being loaded.\n\nCommit 9ebd4eba7 (\"procfs: fix /proc/\u003cpid\u003e/stat stack pointer for kernel\nthreads\") was applied to fix a bug which had kernel threads printing a\nuserland stack address.\n\nCommit 1306d603f (\u0027proc: partially revert \"procfs: provide stack\ninformation for threads\"\u0027) was then applied to revert the stack pages\nbeing used to solve a significant performance regression.\n\nThis patch nearly undoes the effect of all these patches.\n\nThe reason for reverting these is it provides an unusable value in\nfield 28.  For x86_64, a fork will result in the task-\u003estack_start\nvalue being updated to the current user top of stack and not the stack\nstart address.  This unpredictability of the stack_start value makes\nit worthless.  That includes the intended use of showing how much stack\nspace a thread has.\n\nOther architectures will get different values.  As an example, ia64\ngets 0.  The do_fork() and copy_process() functions appear to treat the\nstack_start and stack_size parameters as architecture specific.\n\nI only partially reverted c44972f1 (\"procfs: disable per-task stack usage\non NOMMU\") .  If I had completely reverted it, I would have had to change\nmm/Makefile only build pagewalk.o when CONFIG_PROC_PAGE_MONITOR is\nconfigured.  Since I could not test the builds without significant effort,\nI decided to not change mm/Makefile.\n\nI only partially reverted 89240ba0 (\"x86, fs: Fix x86 procfs stack\ninformation for threads on 64-bit\") .       "message": "include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h\n\npercpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being\nincluded when building most .c files.  percpu.h includes slab.h which\nin turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files\nuniversally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.\n\npercpu.h -\u003e slab.h dependency is about to be removed.  Prepare for\nthis change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those\nheaders directly instead of assuming availability.  As this conversion\nneeds to touch large number of source files, the following script is\nused as the basis of conversion.\n\n  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py\n\nThe script does the followings.\n\n* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that\n  only the necessary includes are there.  ie. if only gfp is used,\n  gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.\n\n* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include\n  blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms\n  to its surrounding.  It\u0027s put in the include block which contains\n  core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -\n  alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there\n  doesn\u0027t seem to be any matching order.\n\n* If the script can\u0027t find a place to put a new include (mostly\n  because the file doesn\u0027t have fitting include block), it prints out\n  an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the\n  file.\n\nThe conversion was done in the following steps.\n\n1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly\n   over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h\n   and ~3000 slab.h inclusions.  The script emitted errors for ~400\n   files.\n\n2. Each error was manually checked.  Some didn\u0027t need the inclusion,\n   some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or\n   embedding .c file was more appropriate for others.  This step added\n   inclusions to around 150 files.\n\n3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits\n   from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.\n\n4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.\n   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab\n   APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.\n\n5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically\n   editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h\n   files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell.  Most gfp.h\n   inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually\n   wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros.  Each\n   slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as\n   necessary.\n\n6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.\n\n7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures\n   were fixed.       "message": "sched, cputime: Introduce thread_group_times()\n\nThis is a real fix for problem of utime/stime values decreasing\ndescribed in the thread:\n\n   http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/11/3/522\n\nNow cputime is accounted in the following way:\n\n - {u,s}time in task_struct are increased every time when the thread\n   is interrupted by a tick (timer interrupt).\n\n - When a thread exits, its {u,s}time are added to signal-\u003e{u,s}time,\n   after adjusted by task_times().\n\n - When all threads in a thread_group exits, accumulated {u,s}time\n   (and also c{u,s}time) in signal struct are added to c{u,s}time\n   in signal struct of the group\u0027s parent.\n\nSo {u,s}time in task struct are \"raw\" tick count, while\n{u,s}time and c{u,s}time in signal struct are \"adjusted\" values.\n\nAnd accounted values are used by:\n\n - task_times(), to get cputime of a thread:\n   This function returns adjusted values that originates from raw\n   {u,s}time and scaled by sum_exec_runtime that accounted by CFS.\n\n - thread_group_cputime(), to get cputime of a thread group:\n   This function returns sum of all {u,s}time of living threads in\n   the group, plus {u,s}time in the signal struct that is sum of\n   adjusted cputimes of all exited threads belonged to the group.\n\nThe problem is the return value of thread_group_cputime(),\nbecause it is mixed sum of \"raw\" value and \"adjusted\" value:\n\n  group\u0027s {u,s}time \u003d foreach(thread){{u,s}time} + exited({u,s}time)\n\nThis misbehavior can break {u,s}time monotonicity.\nAssume that if there is a thread that have raw values greater\nthan adjusted values (e.g. interrupted by 1000Hz ticks 50 times\nbut only runs 45ms) and if it exits, cputime will decrease (e.g.\n-5ms).\n\nTo fix this, we could do:\n\n  group\u0027s {u,s}time \u003d foreach(t){task_times(t)} + exited({u,s}time)\n\nBut task_times() contains hard divisions, so applying it for\nevery thread should be avoided.\n\nThis patch fixes the above problem in the following way:\n\n - Modify thread\u0027s exit (\u003d __exit_signal()) not to use task_times().\n   It means {u,s}time in signal struct accumulates raw values instead\n   of adjusted values.  As the result it makes thread_group_cputime()\n   to return pure sum of \"raw\" values.\n\n - Introduce a new function thread_group_times(*task, *utime, *stime)\n   that converts \"raw\" values of thread_group_cputime() to \"adjusted\"\n   values, in same calculation procedure as task_times().\n\n - Modify group\u0027s exit (\u003d wait_task_zombie()) to use this introduced\n   thread_group_times().       "message": "timers: fix itimer/many thread hang\n\nOverview\n\nThis patch reworks the handling of POSIX CPU timers, including the\nITIMER_PROF, ITIMER_VIRT timers and rlimit handling.  It was put together\nwith the help of Roland McGrath, the owner and original writer of this code.\n\nThe problem we ran into, and the reason for this rework, has to do with using\na profiling timer in a process with a large number of threads.  It appears\nthat the performance of the old implementation of run_posix_cpu_timers() was\nat least O(n*3) (where \"n\" is the number of threads in a process) or worse.\nEverything is fine with an increasing number of threads until the time taken\nfor that routine to run becomes the same as or greater than the tick time, at\nwhich point things degrade rather quickly.\n\nThis patch fixes bug 9906, \"Weird hang with NPTL and SIGPROF.\"\n\nCode Changes\n\nThis rework corrects the implementation of run_posix_cpu_timers() to make it\nrun in constant time for a particular machine.  (Performance may vary between\none machine and another depending upon whether the kernel is built as single-\nor multiprocessor and, in the latter case, depending upon the number of\nrunning processors.)  To do this, at each tick we now update fields in\nsignal_struct as well as task_struct.  The run_posix_cpu_timers() function\nuses those fields to make its decisions.\n\nWe define a new structure, \"task_cputime,\" to contain user, system and\nscheduler times and use these in appropriate places:\n\nstruct task_cputime {\n\tcputime_t utime;\n\tcputime_t stime;\n\tunsigned long long sum_exec_runtime;\n};\n\nThis is included in the structure \"thread_group_cputime,\" which is a new\nsubstructure of signal_struct and which varies for uniprocessor versus\nmultiprocessor kernels.  For uniprocessor kernels, it uses \"task_cputime\" as\na simple substructure, while for multiprocessor kernels it is a pointer:\n\nstruct thread_group_cputime {\n\tstruct task_cputime totals;\n};\n\nstruct thread_group_cputime {\n\tstruct task_cputime *totals;\n};\n\nWe also add a new task_cputime substructure directly to signal_struct, to\ncache the earliest expiration of process-wide timers, and task_cputime also\nreplaces the it_*_expires fields of task_struct (used for earliest expiration\nof thread timers).  The \"thread_group_cputime\" structure contains process-wide\ntimers that are updated via account_user_time() and friends.  In the non-SMP\ncase the structure is a simple aggregator; unfortunately in the SMP case that\nsimplicity was not achievable due to cache-line contention between CPUs (in\none measured case performance was actually _worse_ on a 16-cpu system than\nthe same test on a 4-cpu system, due to this contention).  For SMP, the\nthread_group_cputime counters are maintained as a per-cpu structure allocated\nusing alloc_percpu().  The timer functions update only the timer field in\nthe structure corresponding to the running CPU, obtained using per_cpu_ptr().\n\nWe define a set of inline functions in sched.h that we use to maintain the\nthread_group_cputime structure and hide the differences between UP and SMP\nimplementations from the rest of the kernel.  The thread_group_cputime_init()\nfunction initializes the thread_group_cputime structure for the given task.\nThe thread_group_cputime_alloc() is a no-op for UP; for SMP it calls the\nout-of-line function thread_group_cputime_alloc_smp() to allocate and fill\nin the per-cpu structures and fields.  The thread_group_cputime_free()\nfunction, also a no-op for UP, in SMP frees the per-cpu structures.  The\nthread_group_cputime_clone_thread() function (also a UP no-op) for SMP calls\nthread_group_cputime_alloc() if the per-cpu structures haven\u0027t yet been\nallocated.  The thread_group_cputime() function fills the task_cputime\nstructure it is passed with the contents of the thread_group_cputime fields;\nin UP it\u0027s that simple but in SMP it must also safely check that tsk-\u003esignal\nis non-NULL (if it is it just uses the appropriate fields of task_struct) and,\nif so, sums the per-cpu values for each online CPU.  Finally, the three\nfunctions account_group_user_time(), account_group_system_time() and\naccount_group_exec_runtime() are used by timer functions to update the\nrespective fields of the thread_group_cputime structure.\n\nNon-SMP operation is trivial and will not be mentioned further.\n\nThe per-cpu structure is always allocated when a task creates its first new\nthread, via a call to thread_group_cputime_clone_thread() from copy_signal().\nIt is freed at process exit via a call to thread_group_cputime_free() from\ncleanup_signal().\n\nAll functions that formerly summed utime/stime/sum_sched_runtime values from\nfrom all threads in the thread group now use thread_group_cputime() to\nsnapshot the values in the thread_group_cputime structure or the values in\nthe task structure itself if the per-cpu structure hasn\u0027t been allocated.\n\nFinally, the code in kernel/posix-cpu-timers.c has changed quite a bit.\nThe run_posix_cpu_timers() function has been split into a fast path and a\nslow path; the former safely checks whether there are any expired thread\ntimers and, if not, just returns, while the slow path does the heavy lifting.\nWith the dedicated thread group fields, timers are no longer \"rebalanced\" and\nthe process_timer_rebalance() function and related code has gone away.  All\nsumming loops are gone and all code that used them now uses the\nthread_group_cputime() inline.  When process-wide timers are set, the new\ntask_cputime structure in signal_struct is used to cache the earliest\nexpiration; this is checked in the fast path.\n\nPerformance\n\nThe fix appears not to add significant overhead to existing operations.  It\ngenerally performs the same as the current code except in two cases, one in\nwhich it performs slightly worse (Case 5 below) and one in which it performs\nvery significantly better (Case 2 below).  Overall it\u0027s a wash except in those\ntwo cases.\n\nI\u0027ve since done somewhat more involved testing on a dual-core Opteron system.\n\nCase 1: With no itimer running, for a test with 100,000 threads, the fixed\n\tkernel took 1428.5 seconds, 513 seconds more than the unfixed system,\n\tall of which was spent in the system.  There were twice as many\n\tvoluntary context switches with the fix as without it.\n\nCase 2: With an itimer running at .01 second ticks and 4000 threads (the most\n\tan unmodified kernel can handle), the fixed kernel ran the test in\n\teight percent of the time (5.8 seconds as opposed to 70 seconds) and\n\thad better tick accuracy (.012 seconds per tick as opposed to .023\n\tseconds per tick).\n\nCase 3: A 4000-thread test with an initial timer tick of .01 second and an\n\tinterval of 10,000 seconds (i.e. a timer that ticks only once) had\n\tvery nearly the same performance in both cases:  6.3 seconds elapsed\n\tfor the fixed kernel versus 5.5 seconds for the unfixed kernel.\n\nWith fewer threads (eight in these tests), the Case 1 test ran in essentially\nthe same time on both the modified and unmodified kernels (5.2 seconds versus\n5.8 seconds).  The Case 2 test ran in about the same time as well, 5.9 seconds\nversus 5.4 seconds but again with much better tick accuracy, .013 seconds per\ntick versus .025 seconds per tick for the unmodified kernel.\n\nSince the fix affected the rlimit code, I also tested soft and hard CPU limits.\n\nCase 4: With a hard CPU limit of 20 seconds and eight threads (and an itimer\n\trunning), the modified kernel was very slightly favored in that while\n\tit killed the process in 19.997 seconds of CPU time (5.002 seconds of\n\twall time), only .003 seconds of that was system time, the rest was\n\tuser time.  The unmodified kernel killed the process in 20.001 seconds\n\tof CPU (5.014 seconds of wall time) of which .016 seconds was system\n\ttime.  Really, though, the results were too close to call.  The results\n\twere essentially the same with no itimer running.\n\nCase 5: With a soft limit of 20 seconds and a hard limit of 2000 seconds\n\t(where the hard limit would never be reached) and an itimer running,\n\tthe modified kernel exhibited worse tick accuracy than the unmodified\n\tkernel: .050 seconds/tick versus .028 seconds/tick.  Otherwise,\n\tperformance was almost indistinguishable.  With no itimer running this\n\ttest exhibited virtually identical behavior and times in both cases.\n\nIn times past I did some limited performance testing.  those results are below.\n\nOn a four-cpu Opteron system without this fix, a sixteen-thread test executed\nin 3569.991 seconds, of which user was 3568.435s and system was 1.556s.  On\nthe same system with the fix, user and elapsed time were about the same, but\nsystem time dropped to 0.007 seconds.  Performance with eight, four and one\nthread were comparable.  Interestingly, the timer ticks with the fix seemed\nmore accurate:  The sixteen-thread test with the fix received 149543 ticks\nfor 0.024 seconds per tick, while the same test without the fix received 58720\nfor 0.061 seconds per tick.  Both cases were configured for an interval of\n0.01 seconds.  Again, the other tests were comparable.  Each thread in this\ntest computed the primes up to 25,000,000.\n\nI also did a test with a large number of threads, 100,000 threads, which is\nimpossible without the fix.  In this case each thread computed the primes only\nup to 10,000 (to make the runtime manageable).  System time dominated, at\n1546.968 seconds out of a total 2176.906 seconds (giving a user time of\n629.938s).  It received 147651 ticks for 0.015 seconds per tick, still quite\naccurate.       "message": "capabilities: remain source compatible with 32-bit raw legacy capability support.\n\nSource code out there hard-codes a notion of what the\n_LINUX_CAPABILITY_VERSION #define means in terms of the semantics of the\nraw capability system calls capget() and capset().  Its unfortunate, but\ntrue.\n\nSince the confusing header file has been in a released kernel, there is\nsoftware that is erroneously using 64-bit capabilities with the semantics\nof 32-bit compatibilities.  These recently compiled programs may suffer\ncorruption of their memory when sys_getcap() overwrites more memory than\nthey are coded to expect, and the raising of added capabilities when using\nsys_capset().\n\nAs such, this patch does a number of things to clean up the situation\nfor all. It\n\n  1. forces the _LINUX_CAPABILITY_VERSION define to always retain its\n     legacy value.\n\n  2. adopts a new #define strategy for the kernel\u0027s internal\n     implementation of the preferred magic.\n\n  3. deprecates v2 capability magic in favor of a new (v3) magic\n     number.       "message": "reduce size of task_struct on 64-bit machines\n\nThis past week I was playing around with that pahole tool\n(http://oops.ghostprotocols.net:81/acme/dwarves/) and looking at the size\nof various struct in the kernel.  I was surprised by the size of the\ntask_struct on x86_64, approaching 4K.  I looked through the fields in\ntask_struct and found that a number of them were declared as \"unsigned\nlong\" rather than \"unsigned int\" despite them appearing okay as 32-bit\nsized fields.  On x86_64 \"unsigned long\" ends up being 8 bytes in size and\nforces 8 byte alignment.  Is there a reason there a reason they are\n\"unsigned long\"?\n\nThe patch below drops the size of the struct from 3808 bytes (60 64-byte\ncachelines) to 3760 bytes (59 64-byte cachelines).       "message": "[PATCH] tty: update the tty layer to work with struct pid\n\nOf kernel subsystems that work with pids the tty layer is probably the largest\nconsumer.  But it has the nice virtue that the assiation with a session only\nlasts until the session leader exits.  Which means that no reference counting\nis required. So currently each anonymous page has to be counted twice, in rss\nand in anon_rss.  Which won\u0027t be so good if those are atomic counts in some\nconfigurations.\n\nChange that around: keep file_rss and anon_rss separately, and add them\ntogether (with get_mm_rss macro) when the total is needed - reading two\natomics is much cheaper than updating two atomics. Instead of ensuring this through too many memory\nbarriers, we put the arrays and their sizes in a separate structure. It also changes all\nthe users to refer to the file table using files_fdtable() macro.
