      "message": "[IA64] Altix pcibus_to_node implementation\n\nThe Altix subarch does not provide node information via ACPI. Instead hooks\nare used to fixup pci structures. This patch determines the nodes for Altix\nPCI busses.\n\nRemote Bridges:\n---------------\nAltix supports remote I/O nodes without memory or processors but with bridges.\nThe TIOCA type of bridge is an AGP bridge and the PROM provides information\nabout the closest node. That information will be returned by pcibus_to_node.\n\nThe TIOCP remote bridge type is a PCI bridge but the PROM does not provide a\nclosest node id. pcibus_to_node will return -1 for devices on those bridges\nmeaning that device control structures may be allocated on any node.\n\nSafeguard:\n----------\nShould the fixups result in invalid node information for a pci controller then\na warning will be printed and pcibus_to_node will return -1.\n\n\nThis patch also fixes the \"FIXME\" in sn_dma_alloc_coherent.       "message": "[IA64] assign_irq_vector() should not panic\n\nCurrent assign_irq_vector() will panic if interrupt vectors is running\nout. But I think how to handle the case of lack of interrupt vectors\nshould be handled by the caller of this function. For example, some\nPCI devices can raise the interrupt signal via both MSI and I/O\nAPIC. So even if the driver for these device fails to allocate a\nvector for MSI, the driver still has a chance to use I/O APIC based\ninterrupt. Greg Edwards\ndug it out of obscurity just over a week ago, and almost immediately\nanother conflicting patch appeared (Bob Picco\u0027s memory-less nodes).\n\nI\u0027ve resolved the conflicts and got it running again.  CONFIG_SGI_TIOCX\nis set to \"y\" in defconfig, which causes a Tiger to not boot (oops in\ntiocx_init).       "message": "[PATCH] PCI: DMA bursting advice\n\nAfter seeing, at best, \"guesses\" as to the following kind\nof information in several drivers, I decided that we really\nneed a way for platforms to specifically give advice in this\narea for what works best with their PCI controller implementation.\n\nBasically, this new interface gives DMA bursting advice on\nPCI.  There are three forms of the advice:\n\n1) Burst as much as possible, it is not necessary to end bursts\n   on some particular boundary for best performance.\n\n2) Burst on some byte count multiple.  A DMA burst to some multiple of\n   number of bytes may be done, but it is important to end the burst\n   on an exact multiple for best performance.\n\n   The best example of this I am aware of are the PPC64 PCI\n   controllers, where if you end a burst mid-cacheline then\n   chip has to refetch the data and the IOMMU translations\n   which hurts performance a lot.\n\n3) Burst on a single byte count multiple.  Bursts shall end\n   exactly on the next multiple boundary for best performance.\n\n   Sparc64 and Alpha\u0027s PCI controllers operate this way.  They\n   disconnect any device which tries to burst across a cacheline\n   boundary.\n\n   Actually, newer sparc64 PCI controllers do not have this behavior.\n   That is why the \"pdev\" is passed into the interface, so I can\n   add code later to check which PCI controller the system is using\n   and give advice accordingly.\n\nSigned-off-by: David S. This is the function\n   that handles the details for calling the return probe handler function\n   and returning control back at the original return address\n * Addition of arch_prepare_kretprobe() which is setup as the pre_handler\n   for a kprobe registered at the beginning of the target function by\n   kernel/kprobes.c so that a return probe instance can be setup when\n   a caller enters the target function. This\nis problematic for execution of 32 bit processes, which are not largefile\naware, either by SW emulation or by HW execution.\n\nFor such processes, the problem is two-fold:\n\n1) When trying to open a file that is larger than 4G\n   the operation should fail, but it\u0027s not\n2) Writing to offset larger than 4G should fail, but\n   it\u0027s not\n\nThe proposed patch takes advantage of the way 32 bit processes are\nidentified in ia64 systems.  Such processes have PER_LINUX32 for their\npersonality.  With the patch, the ia64 kernel will not enforce the\nO_LARGEFILE flag if the current process has PER_LINUX32 set.       "message": "[PATCH] ia64 uncached alloc\n\nThis patch contains the ia64 uncached page allocator and the generic\nallocator (genalloc).  The uncached allocator was formerly part of the SN2\nmspec driver but there are several other users of it so it has been split\noff from the driver.\n\nThe generic allocator can be used by device driver to manage special memory\netc.  The generic allocator is based on the allocator from the sym53c8xx_2\ndriver.\n\nVarious users on ia64 needs uncached memory.  The SGI SN architecture requires\nit for inter-partition communication between partitions within a large NUMA\ncluster.  The specific user for this is the XPC code.  Another application is\nlarge MPI style applications which use it for synchronization, on SN this can\nbe done using special \u0027fetchop\u0027 operations but it also benefits non SN\nhardware which may use regular uncached memory for this purpose.  Performance\nof doing this through uncached vs cached memory is pretty substantial.  This\nis handled by the mspec driver which I will push out in a seperate patch.\n\nRather than creating a specific allocator for just uncached memory I came up\nwith genalloc which is a generic purpose allocator that can be used by device\ndrivers and other subsystems as they please.  For instance to handle onboard\ndevice memory.  It was derived from the sym53c7xx_2 driver\u0027s allocator which\nis also an example of a potential user (I am refraining from modifying sym2\nright now as it seems to have been under fairly heavy development recently).\n\nOn ia64 memory has various properties within a granule, ie.  it isn\u0027t safe to\naccess memory as uncached within the same granule as currently has memory\naccessed in cached mode.  The regular system therefore doesn\u0027t utilize memory\nin the lower granules which is mixed in with device PAL code etc.  The\nuncached driver walks the EFI memmap and pulls out the spill uncached pages\nand sticks them into the uncached pool.       "message": "[PATCH] Hugepage consolidation\n\nA lot of the code in arch/*/mm/hugetlbpage.c is quite similar.  This patch\nattempts to consolidate a lot of the code across the arch\u0027s, putting the\ncombined version in mm/hugetlb.c.  There are a couple of uglyish hacks in\norder to covert all the hugepage archs, but the result is a very large\nreduction in the total amount of code.       "message": "[PATCH] VM: early zone reclaim\n\nThis is the core of the (much simplified) early reclaim.  The goal of this\npatch is to reclaim some easily-freed pages from a zone before falling back\nonto another zone.\n\nOne of the major uses of this is NUMA machines.  With the default allocator\nbehavior the allocator would look for memory in another zone, which might be\noff-node, before trying to reclaim from the current zone.\n\nThis adds a zone tuneable to enable early zone reclaim.  It is selected on a\nper-zone basis and is turned on/off via syscall.\n\nAdding some extra throttling on the reclaim was also required (patch\n4/4).  Without the machine would grind to a crawl when doing a \"make -j\"\nkernel build.  Even with this patch the System Time is higher on\naverage, but it seems tolerable.  Here are some numbers for kernbench\nruns on a 2-node, 4cpu, 8Gig RAM Altix in the \"make -j\" run:\n\n\t\t\twall  user   sys   %cpu  ctx sw.  sleeps\n\t\t\t----  ----   ---   ----   ------  ------\nNo patch\t\t1009  1384   847   258   298170   504402\nw/patch, no reclaim     880   1376   667   288   254064   396745\nw/patch \u0026 reclaim       1079  1385   926   252   291625   548873\n\nThese numbers are the average of 2 runs of 3 \"make -j\" runs done right\nafter system boot.       "message": "[PATCH] smp_processor_id() cleanup\n\nThis patch implements a number of smp_processor_id() cleanup ideas that\nArjan van de Ven and I came up with.\n\nThe previous __smp_processor_id/_smp_processor_id/smp_processor_id API\nspaghetti was hard to follow both on the implementational and on the\nusage side.\n\nSome of the complexity arose from picking wrong names, some of the\ncomplexity comes from the fact that not all architectures defined\n__smp_processor_id.\n\nIn the new code, there are two externally visible symbols:\n\n - smp_processor_id(): debug variant.\n\n - raw_smp_processor_id(): nondebug variant. Replaces all existing\n   uses of _smp_processor_id() and __smp_processor_id(). Defined\n   by every SMP architecture in include/asm-*/smp.h.\n\nThere is one new internal symbol, dependent on DEBUG_PREEMPT:\n\n - debug_smp_processor_id(): internal debug variant, mapped to\n                             smp_processor_id().\n\nAlso, i moved debug_smp_processor_id() from lib/kernel_lock.c into a new\nlib/smp_processor_id.c file. This is caused by the possibility of preemption\nand rescheduling on a different processor while saving or restioirng the\nhigh partition.\n\nThe only places where the FPU state is touched are in ptrace, in\nswitch_to(), and where handling a floating-point exception.  In switch_to()\npreemption is off.  So it\u0027s only in trap.c and ptrace.c that we need to\nprevent preemption.\n\nHere is a patch that adds commentary to make the conditions clear, and adds\nappropriate preempt_{en,dis}able() calls to make it so.       "message": "[PATCH] AGP fix for Xen VMM\n\nWhen Linux is running on the Xen virtual machine monitor, physical\naddresses are virtualised and cannot be directly referenced by the AGP\nGART.  This patch fixes the GART driver for Xen by adding a layer of\nabstraction between physical addresses and \u0027GART addresses\u0027.\n\nArchitecture-specific functions are also defined for allocating and freeing\nthe GATT.       "message": "[IA64] Percpu quicklist for combined allocator for pgd/pmd/pte.\n\nThis patch introduces using the quicklists for pgd, pmd, and pte levels\nby combining the alloc and free functions into a common set of routines.\nThis greatly simplifies the reading of this header file.\n\nThis patch is simple but necessary for large numa configurations.\nIt simply ensures that only pages from the local node are added to a\ncpus quicklist.  This prevents the trapping of pages on a remote nodes\nquicklist by starting a process, touching a large number of pages to\nfill pmd and pte entries, migrating to another node, and then unmapping\nor exiting.  With those conditions, the pages get trapped and if the\nmachine has more than 100 nodes of the same size, the calculation of\nthe pgtable high water mark will be larger than any single node so page\ntable cache flushing will never occur.\n\nI ran lmbench lat_proc fork and lat_proc exec on a zx1 with and without\nthis patch and did not notice any change.\n\nOn an sn2 machine, there was a slight improvement which is possibly\ndue to pages from other nodes trapped on the test node before starting\nthe run.  I did not investigate further.\n\nThis patch shrinks the quicklist based upon free memory on the node\ninstead of the high/low water marks. Existing code\njust fakes the real offline by keeping it run the idle thread, and polling\nfor the bit to re-appear in the cpu_state to get out of the idle loop.\n\nFor the cpu-offline to work correctly, we need to pass control of this CPU \nback to SAL so it can continue in the boot-rendez mode. This gives the\nSAL control to not pick this cpu as the monarch processor for global MCA\nevents, and addition does not wait for this cpu to checkin with SAL\nfor global MCA events as well. This patch fixes the problem\nby using a popcnt-based fls(), which on McKinley-derived cores is\nslightly faster than both ia64_fls() and generic_fls().       "message": "[PATCH] freepgt: hugetlb_free_pgd_range\n\nia64 and ppc64 had hugetlb_free_pgtables functions which were no longer being\ncalled, and it wasn\u0027t obvious what to do about them.\n\nThe ppc64 case turns out to be easy: the associated tables are noted elsewhere\nand freed later, safe to either skip its hugetlb areas or go through the\nmotions of freeing nothing.  Since ia64 does need a special case, restore to\nppc64 the special case of skipping them.\n\nThe ia64 hugetlb case has been broken since pgd_addr_end went in, though it\nprobably appeared to work okay if you just had one such area; in fact it\u0027s\nbeen broken much longer if you consider a long munmap spanning from another\nregion into the hugetlb region.\n\nIn the ia64 hugetlb region, more virtual address bits are available than in\nthe other regions, yet the page tables are structured the same way: the page\nat the bottom is larger.  Here we need to scale down each addr before passing\nit to the standard free_pgd_range.  Was about to write a hugely_scaled_down\nmacro, but found htlbpage_to_page already exists for just this purpose.  Fixed\noff-by-one in ia64 is_hugepage_only_range.\n\nUninline free_pgd_range to make it available to ia64.
