They have no\nessential function for the VM.\n\nWe use a simple increment of per cpu variables. In order to avoid the most\nsevere races we disable preempt. Preempt does not prevent the race between\nan increment and an interrupt handler incrementing the same statistics\ncounter. However, that race is exceedingly rare, we may only loose one\nincrement or so and there is no requirement (at least not in kernel) that\nthe vm event counters have to be accurate.\n\nIn the non preempt case this results in a simple increment for each\ncounter. For many architectures this will be reduced by the compiler to a\nsingle instruction. These writes to the struct\npage could cause excessive cacheline bouncing on big systems.
