      "message": "oom: badness heuristic rewrite\n\nThis a complete rewrite of the oom killer\u0027s badness() heuristic which is\nused to determine which task to kill in oom conditions.  The goal is to\nmake it as simple and predictable as possible so the results are better\nunderstood and we end up killing the task which will lead to the most\nmemory freeing while still respecting the fine-tuning from userspace.\n\nInstead of basing the heuristic on mm-\u003etotal_vm for each task, the task\u0027s\nrss and swap space is used instead.  This is a better indication of the\namount of memory that will be freeable if the oom killed task is chosen\nand subsequently exits.  This helps specifically in cases where KDE or\nGNOME is chosen for oom kill on desktop systems instead of a memory\nhogging task.\n\nThe baseline for the heuristic is a proportion of memory that each task is\ncurrently using in memory plus swap compared to the amount of \"allowable\"\nmemory.  \"Allowable,\" in this sense, means the system-wide resources for\nunconstrained oom conditions, the set of mempolicy nodes, the mems\nattached to current\u0027s cpuset, or a memory controller\u0027s limit.  The\nproportion is given on a scale of 0 (never kill) to 1000 (always kill),\nroughly meaning that if a task has a badness() score of 500 that the task\nconsumes approximately 50% of allowable memory resident in RAM or in swap\nspace.\n\nThe proportion is always relative to the amount of \"allowable\" memory and\nnot the total amount of RAM systemwide so that mempolicies and cpusets may\noperate in isolation; they shall not need to know the true size of the\nmachine on which they are running if they are bound to a specific set of\nnodes or mems, respectively.\n\nRoot tasks are given 3% extra memory just like __vm_enough_memory()\nprovides in LSMs.  In the event of two tasks consuming similar amounts of\nmemory, it is generally better to save root\u0027s task.\n\nBecause of the change in the badness() heuristic\u0027s baseline, it is also\nnecessary to introduce a new user interface to tune it.  It\u0027s not possible\nto redefine the meaning of /proc/pid/oom_adj with a new scale since the\nABI cannot be changed for backward compatability.  Instead, a new tunable,\n/proc/pid/oom_score_adj, is added that ranges from -1000 to +1000.  It may\nbe used to polarize the heuristic such that certain tasks are never\nconsidered for oom kill while others may always be considered.  The value\nis added directly into the badness() score so a value of -500, for\nexample, means to discount 50% of its memory consumption in comparison to\nother tasks either on the system, bound to the mempolicy, in the cpuset,\nor sharing the same memory controller.\n\n/proc/pid/oom_adj is changed so that its meaning is rescaled into the\nunits used by /proc/pid/oom_score_adj, and vice versa.  Changing one of\nthese per-task tunables will rescale the value of the other to an\nequivalent meaning.  Although /proc/pid/oom_adj was originally defined as\na bitshift on the badness score, it now shares the same linear growth as\n/proc/pid/oom_score_adj but with different granularity.       "message": "revert \"procfs: provide stack information for threads\" and its fixup commits\n\nOriginally, commit d899bf7b (\"procfs: provide stack information for\nthreads\") attempted to introduce a new feature for showing where the\nthreadstack was located and how many pages are being utilized by the\nstack.\n\nCommit c44972f1 (\"procfs: disable per-task stack usage on NOMMU\") was\napplied to fix the NO_MMU case.\n\nCommit 89240ba0 (\"x86, fs: Fix x86 procfs stack information for threads on\n64-bit\") was applied to fix a bug in ia32 executables being loaded.\n\nCommit 9ebd4eba7 (\"procfs: fix /proc/\u003cpid\u003e/stat stack pointer for kernel\nthreads\") was applied to fix a bug which had kernel threads printing a\nuserland stack address.\n\nCommit 1306d603f (\u0027proc: partially revert \"procfs: provide stack\ninformation for threads\"\u0027) was then applied to revert the stack pages\nbeing used to solve a significant performance regression.\n\nThis patch nearly undoes the effect of all these patches.\n\nThe reason for reverting these is it provides an unusable value in\nfield 28.  For x86_64, a fork will result in the task-\u003estack_start\nvalue being updated to the current user top of stack and not the stack\nstart address.  This unpredictability of the stack_start value makes\nit worthless.  That includes the intended use of showing how much stack\nspace a thread has.\n\nOther architectures will get different values.  As an example, ia64\ngets 0.  The do_fork() and copy_process() functions appear to treat the\nstack_start and stack_size parameters as architecture specific.\n\nI only partially reverted c44972f1 (\"procfs: disable per-task stack usage\non NOMMU\") .  If I had completely reverted it, I would have had to change\nmm/Makefile only build pagewalk.o when CONFIG_PROC_PAGE_MONITOR is\nconfigured.  Since I could not test the builds without significant effort,\nI decided to not change mm/Makefile.\n\nI only partially reverted 89240ba0 (\"x86, fs: Fix x86 procfs stack\ninformation for threads on 64-bit\") .       "message": "oom: move oom_adj value from task_struct to mm_struct\n\nThe per-task oom_adj value is a characteristic of its mm more than the\ntask itself since it\u0027s not possible to oom kill any thread that shares the\nmm.  If a task were to be killed while attached to an mm that could not be\nfreed because another thread were set to OOM_DISABLE, it would have\nneedlessly been terminated since there is no potential for future memory\nfreeing.\n\nThis patch moves oomkilladj (now more appropriately named oom_adj) from\nstruct task_struct to struct mm_struct.  This requires task_lock() on a\ntask to check its oom_adj value to protect against exec, but it\u0027s already\nnecessary to take the lock when dereferencing the mm to find the total VM\nsize for the badness heuristic.\n\nThis fixes a livelock if the oom killer chooses a task and another thread\nsharing the same memory has an oom_adj value of OOM_DISABLE.  This occurs\nbecause oom_kill_task() repeatedly returns 1 and refuses to kill the\nchosen task while select_bad_process() will repeatedly choose the same\ntask during the next retry.\n\nTaking task_lock() in select_bad_process() to check for OOM_DISABLE and in\noom_kill_task() to check for threads sharing the same memory will be\nremoved in the next patch in this series where it will no longer be\nnecessary.\n\nWriting to /proc/pid/oom_adj for a kthread will now return -EINVAL since\nthese threads are immune from oom killing already.       "message": "mm: add dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes sysctls\n\nThis change introduces two new sysctls to /proc/sys/vm:\ndirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes.\n\ndirty_background_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_background_ratio and\ndirty_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_ratio.\n\nWith growing memory capacities of individual machines, it\u0027s no longer\nsufficient to specify dirty thresholds as a percentage of the amount of\ndirtyable memory over the entire system.\n\ndirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes specify quantities of memory, in\nbytes, that represent the dirty limits for the entire system.  If either\nof these values is set, its value represents the amount of dirty memory\nthat is needed to commence either background or direct writeback.\n\nWhen a `bytes\u0027 or `ratio\u0027 file is written, its counterpart becomes a\nfunction of the written value.  For example, if dirty_bytes is written to\nbe 8096, 8K of memory is required to commence direct writeback.\ndirty_ratio is then functionally equivalent to 8K / the amount of\ndirtyable memory:\n\n\tdirtyable_memory \u003d free pages + mapped pages + file cache\n\n\tdirty_background_bytes \u003d dirty_background_ratio * dirtyable_memory\n\t\t-or-\n\tdirty_background_ratio \u003d dirty_background_bytes / dirtyable_memory\n\n\t\tAND\n\n\tdirty_bytes \u003d dirty_ratio * dirtyable_memory\n\t\t-or-\n\tdirty_ratio \u003d dirty_bytes / dirtyable_memory\n\nOnly one of dirty_background_bytes and dirty_background_ratio may be\nspecified at a time, and only one of dirty_bytes and dirty_ratio may be\nspecified.  When one sysctl is written, the other appears as 0 when read.\n\nThe `bytes\u0027 files operate on a page size granularity since dirty limits\nare compared with ZVC values, which are in page units.\n\nPrior to this change, the minimum dirty_ratio was 5 as implemented by\nget_dirty_limits() although /proc/sys/vm/dirty_ratio would show any user\nwritten value between 0 and 100.  This restriction is maintained, but\ndirty_bytes has a lower limit of only one page.\n\nAlso prior to this change, the dirty_background_ratio could not equal or\nexceed dirty_ratio.  This restriction is maintained in addition to\nrestricting dirty_background_bytes.       "message": "epoll: introduce resource usage limits\n\nIt has been thought that the per-user file descriptors limit would also\nlimit the resources that a normal user can request via the epoll\ninterface.  Vegard Nossum reported a very simple program (a modified\nversion attached) that can make a normal user to request a pretty large\namount of kernel memory, well within the its maximum number of fds.  To\nsolve such problem, default limits are now imposed, and /proc based\nconfiguration has been introduced.  A new directory has been created,\nnamed /proc/sys/fs/epoll/ and inside there, there are two configuration\npoints:\n\n  max_user_instances \u003d Maximum number of devices - per user\n\n  max_user_watches   \u003d Maximum number of \"watched\" fds - per user\n\nThe current default for \"max_user_watches\" limits the memory used by epoll\nto store \"watches\", to 1/32 of the amount of the low RAM.  As example, a\n256MB 32bit machine, will have \"max_user_watches\" set to roughly 90000.\nThat should be enough to not break existing heavy epoll users.  The\ndefault value for \"max_user_instances\" is set to 128, that should be\nenough too.\n\nThis also changes the userspace, because a new error code can now come out\nfrom EPOLL_CTL_ADD (-ENOSPC). But a VM_RESERVED vma isn\u0027t core dumped because this flag is\noften used for some kernel vmas (e.g.  vmalloc, sound related).\n\nThus hugepages are never dumped and it can\u0027t be debugged easily.  Many\ndevelopers want hugepages to be included into core-dump.\n\nHowever, We can\u0027t read generic VM_RESERVED area because this area is often\nIO mapping area.  then these area reading may change device state.  it is\ndefinitly undesiable side-effect.\n\nSo adding a hugepage specific bit to the coredump filter is better.       "message": "[IPV4] route cache: Introduce rt_genid for smooth cache invalidation\n\nCurrent ip route cache implementation is not suited to large caches.\n\nWe can consume a lot of CPU when cache must be invalidated, since we\ncurrently need to evict all cache entries, and this eviction is\nsometimes asynchronous. min_delay \u0026 max_delay can somewhat control this\nasynchronism behavior, but whole thing is a kludge, regularly triggering\ninfamous soft lockup messages. When entries are still in use, this also\nconsumes a lot of ram, filling dst_garbage.list.\n\nA better scheme is to use a generation identifier on each entry,\nso that cache invalidation can be performed by changing the table\nidentifier, without having to scan all entries.\nNo more delayed flushing, no more stalling when secret_interval expires.\n\nInvalidated entries will then be freed at GC time (controled by\nip_rt_gc_timeout or stress), or when an invalidated entry is found\nin a chain when an insert is done.\nThus we keep a normal equilibrium.\n\nThis patch :\n- renames rt_hash_rnd to rt_genid (and makes it an atomic_t)\n- Adds a new rt_genid field to \u0027struct rtable\u0027 (filling a hole on 64bit)\n- Checks entry-\u003ert_genid at appropriate places :\n"

      "message": "x86: expand /proc/interrupts to include missing vectors, v2\n\nAdd missing IRQs and IRQ descriptions to /proc/interrupts.\n\n/proc/interrupts is most useful when it displays every IRQ vector in use by\nthe system, not just those somebody thought would be interesting.\n\nThis patch inserts the following vector displays to the i386 and x86_64\nplatforms, as appropriate:\n\n\trescheduling interrupts\n\tTLB flush interrupts\n\tfunction call interrupts\n\tthermal event interrupts\n\tthreshold interrupts\n\tspurious interrupts\n\nA threshold interrupt occurs when ECC memory correction is occuring at too\nhigh a frequency.  Thresholds are used by the ECC hardware as occasional\nECC failures are part of normal operation, but long sequences of ECC\nfailures usually indicate a memory chip that is about to fail.\n\nThermal event interrupts occur when a temperature threshold has been\nexceeded for some CPU chip.  IIRC, a thermal interrupt is also generated\nwhen the temperature drops back to a normal level.\n\nA spurious interrupt is an interrupt that was raised then lowered by the\ndevice before it could be fully processed by the APIC.  Hence the apic sees\nthe interrupt but does not know what device it came from.  For this case\nthe APIC hardware will assume a vector of 0xff.\n\nRescheduling, call, and TLB flush interrupts are sent from one CPU to\nanother per the needs of the OS.       "message": "audit: rework execve audit\n\nThe purpose of audit_bprm() is to log the argv array to a userspace daemon at\nthe end of the execve system call.  Since user-space hasn\u0027t had time to run,\nthis array is still in pristine state on the process\u0027 stack; so no need to\ncopy it, we can just grab it from there.\n\nIn order to minimize the damage to audit_log_*() copy each string into a\ntemporary kernel buffer first.\n\nCurrently the audit code requires that the full argument vector fits in a\nsingle packet. When any non-zero number is written to this file,\npte_mkold() and ClearPageReferenced() is called for each pte and its\ncorresponding page, respectively, in that task\u0027s VMAs.       "message": "[PATCH] x86: Add abilty to enable/disable nmi watchdog from procfs (update)\n\nAdds a new /proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog call that will enable/disable the\nnmi watchdog.\n\nBy entering a non-zero value here, a user can enable the nmi watchdog to\nmonitor the online cpus in the system.       "message": "[PATCH] drop-pagecache\n\nAdd /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches.  When written to, this will cause the kernel to\ndiscard as much pagecache and/or reclaimable slab objects as it can.  THis\noperation requires root permissions.\n\nIt won\u0027t drop dirty data, so the user should run `sync\u0027 first.\n\nCaveats:\n\na) Holds inode_lock for exorbitant amounts of time.\n\nb) Needs to be taught about NUMA nodes: propagate these all the way through\n   so the discarding can be controlled on a per-node basis.\n\nThis is a debugging feature: useful for getting consistent results between\nfilesystem benchmarks.
