      "message": "tracing: Dump either the oops\u0027s cpu source or all cpus buffers\n\nThe ftrace_dump_on_oops kernel parameter, sysctl and sysrq let one\ndump every cpu buffers when an oops or panic happens.\n\nIt\u0027s nice when you have few cpus but it may take ages if have many,\nplus you miss the real origin of the problem in all the cpu traces.\n\nSometimes, all you need is to dump the cpu buffer that triggered the\nopps, most of the time it is our main interest.\n\nThis patch modifies ftrace_dump_on_oops to handle this choice.\n\nThe ftrace_dump_on_oops kernel parameter, when it comes alone, has\nthe same behaviour than before.       "message": "include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h\n\npercpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being\nincluded when building most .c files.  percpu.h includes slab.h which\nin turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files\nuniversally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.\n\npercpu.h -\u003e slab.h dependency is about to be removed.  Prepare for\nthis change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those\nheaders directly instead of assuming availability.  As this conversion\nneeds to touch large number of source files, the following script is\nused as the basis of conversion.\n\n  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py\n\nThe script does the followings.\n\n* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that\n  only the necessary includes are there.  ie. if only gfp is used,\n  gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.\n\n* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include\n  blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms\n  to its surrounding.  It\u0027s put in the include block which contains\n  core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -\n  alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there\n  doesn\u0027t seem to be any matching order.\n\n* If the script can\u0027t find a place to put a new include (mostly\n  because the file doesn\u0027t have fitting include block), it prints out\n  an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the\n  file.\n\nThe conversion was done in the following steps.\n\n1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly\n   over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h\n   and ~3000 slab.h inclusions.  The script emitted errors for ~400\n   files.\n\n2. Each error was manually checked.  Some didn\u0027t need the inclusion,\n   some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or\n   embedding .c file was more appropriate for others.  This step added\n   inclusions to around 150 files.\n\n3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits\n   from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.\n\n4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.\n   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab\n   APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.\n\n5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically\n   editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h\n   files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell.  Most gfp.h\n   inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually\n   wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros.  Each\n   slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as\n   necessary.\n\n6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.\n\n7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures\n   were fixed.       "message": "perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -\u003e Performance Events\n\nBye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!\n\nIn the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its\ninitial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is\nbecoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,\nmonitoring, analysis facility.\n\nNaming its core object \u0027perf_counter\u0027 and naming the subsystem\n\u0027perfcounters\u0027 has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending\ncode like hw-breakpoints support the \u0027counter\u0027 name is less and\nless appropriate.\n\nAll in one, we\u0027ve decided to rename the subsystem to \u0027performance\nevents\u0027 and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables\nand API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)\n\nThe word \u0027event\u0027 is also a bit shorter than \u0027counter\u0027 - which makes\nit slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.\n\nThanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and\nsuggested a rename.\n\nUser-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch\nshould be function-invariant.       "message": "debug lockups: Improve lockup detection\n\nWhen debugging a recent lockup bug i found various deficiencies\nin how our current lockup detection helpers work:\n\n - SysRq-L is not very efficient as it uses a workqueue, hence\n   it cannot punch through hard lockups and cannot see through\n   most soft lockups either.\n\n - The SysRq-L code depends on the NMI watchdog - which is off\n   by default.\n\n - We dont print backtraces from the RCU code\u0027s built-in\n   \u0027RCU state machine is stuck\u0027 debug code. This debug\n   code tends to be one of the first (and only) mechanisms\n   that show that a lockup has occured.\n\nThis patch changes the code so taht we:\n\n - Trigger the NMI backtrace code from SysRq-L instead of using\n   a workqueue (which cannot punch through hard lockups)\n\n - Trigger print-all-CPU-backtraces from the RCU lockup detection\n   code\n\nAlso decouple the backtrace printing code from the NMI watchdog:\n\n - Dont use variable size cpumasks (it might not be initialized\n   and they are a bit more fragile anyway)\n\n - Trigger an NMI immediately via an IPI, instead of waiting\n   for the NMI tick to occur. This is a lot faster and can\n   produce more relevant backtraces. It will also work if the\n   NMI watchdog is disabled.\n\n - Dont print the \u0027dazed and confused\u0027 message when we print\n   a backtrace from the NMI\n\n - Do a show_regs() plus a dump_stack() to get maximum info\n   out of the dump. Worst-case we get two stacktraces - which\n   is not a big deal. Sometimes, if register content is\n   corrupted, the precise stack walker in show_regs() wont\n   give us a full backtrace - in this case dump_stack() will\n   do it.\n\nCc: Paul E.       "message": "sysrq, kdump: make sysrq-c consistent\n\ncommit d6580a9f15238b87e618310c862231ae3f352d2d (\"kexec: sysrq: simplify\nsysrq-c handler\") changed the behavior of sysrq-c to unconditional\ndereference of NULL pointer.  So in cases with CONFIG_KEXEC, where\ncrash_kexec() was directly called from sysrq-c before, now it can be said\nthat a step of \"real oops\" was inserted before starting kdump.\n\nHowever, in contrast to oops via SysRq-c from keyboard which results in\npanic due to in_interrupt(), oops via \"echo c \u003e /proc/sysrq-trigger\" will\nnot become panic unless panic_on_oops\u003d1.  It means that even if dump is\nproperly configured to be taken on panic, the sysrq-c from proc interface\nmight not start crashdump while the sysrq-c from keyboard can start\ncrashdump.       "message": "kexec: sysrq: simplify sysrq-c handler\n\nCurrently the sysrq-c handler is bit over-engineered.  Its behavior is\ndependent on a few compile time and run time factors that alter its\nbehavior which is really unnecessecary.\n\nIf CONFIG_KEXEC is not configured, sysrq-c, crashes the system with a NULL\npointer dereference.  If CONFIG_KEXEC is configured, it calls crash_kexec\ndirectly, which implies that the kexec kernel will either be booted (if\nits been previously loaded), or it will simply do nothing (the no kexec\nkernel has been loaded).\n\nIt would be much easier to just simplify the whole thing to dereference a\nNULL pointer all the time regardless of configuration. The\nworst case is when the stuck cpu has interrupts disabled.\n\nTherefore, implement a global cpu state capture that uses\nSMP message interrupts which are not disabled by the\nnormal IRQ enable/disable APIs of the kernel.\n\nAs long as we can get a sysrq \u0027y\u0027 to the kernel, we can\nget a dump.       "message": "WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context data\n\nPass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data.\nThe work function can use container_of() to work out the data.\n\nFor the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the\npending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the\nstructure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit.\n\nTo make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the\nwork_struct.  This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution.\n\nOrdinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further\nscheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the\nwork function.  This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself\nthat the work_struct won\u0027t go away, the work function may not access anything\nelse in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated..  This is a\nproblem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch).\n\nHowever, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work\nfunction, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container\nwith no problems.  But then the work function must itself release the\nwork_struct by calling work_release().\n\nIn most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default.       "message": "IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers\n\nMaintain a per-CPU global \"struct pt_regs *\" variable which can be used instead\nof passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the\nLinux kernel.\n\nThe regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack\nspace and code to pass it around.  On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter\nfrom all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path\n(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).\n\nWhere appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do\nsomething different with the variable.  On FRV, for instance, the address is\nmaintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception\nhandling.\n\nHaving looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down\nthrough up to twenty or so layers of functions.  Consider a USB character\ndevice attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its\ninterrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller.  A character\ndevice driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input\nlayer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.\n\nI\u0027ve build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386.  I\u0027ve runtested the\nmain part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can\u0027t test most of the drivers.\nI\u0027ve also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile\nwith minimal configurations.\n\nThis will affect all archs.  Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.\nTake do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:\n\n\tstruct pt_regs *old_regs \u003d set_irq_regs(regs);\n\nAnd put the old one back at the end:\n\n\tset_irq_regs(old_regs);\n\nDon\u0027t pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().\n\nIn timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:\n\n\t-\tupdate_process_times(user_mode(regs));\n\t-\tprofile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);\n\t+\tupdate_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));\n\t+\tprofile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);\n\nI\u0027d like to move update_process_times()\u0027s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,\nexcept that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().\n\nSome notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:\n\n (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely.  The regs pointer is no longer stored in\n     the input_dev struct.\n\n (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking.       "message": "[PATCH] Terminate process that fails on a constrained allocation\n\nSome allocations are restricted to a limited set of nodes (due to memory\npolicies or cpuset constraints).  If the page allocator is not able to find\nenough memory then that does not mean that overall system memory is low.\n\nIn particular going postal and more or less randomly shooting at processes\nis not likely going to help the situation but may just lead to suicide (the\nwhole system coming down).\n\nIt is better to signal to the process that no memory exists given the\nconstraints that the process (or the configuration of the process) has\nplaced on the allocation behavior.  The process may be killed but then the\nsysadmin or developer can investigate the situation.  The solution is\nsimilar to what we do when running out of hugepages.\n\nThis patch adds a check before we kill processes.  At that point\nperformance considerations do not matter much so we just scan the zonelist\nand reconstruct a list of nodes.       "message": "[PATCH] kdump: Use real pt_regs from exception\n\nMakes kexec_crashdump() take a pt_regs * as an argument.  This allows to\nget exact register state at the point of the crash.  If we come from direct\npanic assertion NULL will be passed and the current registers saved before\ncrashdump.\n\nThis hooks into two places:\ndie(): check the conditions under which we will panic when calling\ndo_exit and go there directly with the pt_regs that caused the fatal\nfault.\n\ndie_nmi(): If we receive an NMI lockup while in the kernel use the\npt_regs and go directly to crash_kexec().
