      "message": "clockevent: Prevent dead lock on clockevents_lock\n\nCurrently clockevents_notify() is called with interrupts enabled at\nsome places and interrupts disabled at some other places.\n\nThis results in a deadlock in this scenario.\n\ncpu A holds clockevents_lock in clockevents_notify() with irqs enabled\ncpu B waits for clockevents_lock in clockevents_notify() with irqs disabled\ncpu C doing set_mtrr() which will try to rendezvous of all the cpus.\n\nThis will result in C and A come to the rendezvous point and waiting\nfor B.       "message": "NOHZ: restart tick device from irq_enter()\n\nWe did not restart the tick device from irq_enter() to avoid double\nreprogramming and extra events in the return immediate to idle case.\n\nBut long lasting softirqs can lead to a situation where jiffies become\nstale:\n\nidle()\n  tick stopped (reprogrammed to next pending timer)\n  halt()\n   interrupt\n     jiffies updated from irq_enter()\n     interrupt handler\n     softirq function 1 runs 20ms\n     softirq function 2 arms a 10ms timer with a stale jiffies value\n     jiffies updated from irq_exit()\n     timer wheel has now an already expired timer\n     (the one added in function 2)\n     timer fires and timer softirq runs\n\nThis was discovered when debugging a timer problem which happend only\nwhen the ath5k driver is active. The enforcement code was stupid and naive, as it just\nadded the minimum delta to the current time and tried to reprogram the device.\nWhen the minimum delta is too small, then this loops forever.\n\nAdd a sanity check.       "message": "x86, clockevents: add C1E aware idle function\n\nC1E on AMD machines is like C3 but without control from the OS. Up to\nnow we disabled the local apic timer for those machines as it stops\nwhen the CPU goes into C1E. This excludes those machines from high\nresolution timers / dynamic ticks, which hurts especially X2 based\nlaptops.\n\nThe current boot time C1E detection has another, more serious flaw\nas well: some BIOSes do not enable C1E until the ACPI processor module\nis loaded. This causes systems to stop working after that point.\n\nTo work nicely with C1E enabled machines we use a separate idle\nfunction, which checks on idle entry whether C1E was enabled in the\nInterrupt Pending Message MSR. This was removed, but the logic in\ntick_handle_oneshot_broadcast() was kept the same.\n\nWhen a broadcast interrupt happens we signal the expiry to all CPUs\nwhich have an expired event. If none of the CPUs has an expired event,\nwhich can happen in dyntick mode, then we reprogram the broadcast\ndevice. We do not reprogram otherwise, but this is only correct if all\nCPUs, which are in the idle broadcast state have been woken up.\n\nThe code ignores, that there might be pending not yet expired events on\nother CPUs, which are in the idle broadcast state.       "message": "clockevents: remove the suspend/resume workaround^Wthinko\n\nIn a desparate attempt to fix the suspend/resume problem on Andrews\nVAIO I added a workaround which enforced the broadcast of the oneshot\ntimer on resume. This was actually resolving the problem on the VAIO\nbut was just a stupid workaround, which was not tackling the root\ncause: the assignement of lower idle C-States in the ACPI processor_idle\ncode. The cpuidle patches, which utilize the dynamic tick feature and\ngo faster into deeper C-states exposed the problem again. The correct\nsolution is the previous patch, which prevents lower C-states across\nthe suspend/resume.\n\nRemove the enforcement code, including the conditional broadcast timer\narming, which helped to pamper over the real problem for quite a time.\nThe oneshot broadcast flag for the cpu, which runs the resume code can\nnever be set at the time when this code is executed. Sigh, I never figured out from the\ncode and the bug reports what\u0027s going on.\n\nThe observed hangs are caused by a stale state transition of the clock\nevent devices, which keeps the RCU synchronization away from completion,\nwhen the non boot CPU is brought back up.\n\nThe suspend/resume in oneshot mode needs the similar care as the\nperiodic mode during suspend to RAM.
