      "message": "mm: add /proc controls for pdflush threads\n\nAdd /proc entries to give the admin the ability to control the minimum and\nmaximum number of pdflush threads.  This allows finer control of pdflush\non both large and small machines.\n\nThe rationale is simply one size does not fit all.  Admins on large and/or\nsmall systems may want to tune the min/max pdflush thread count to best\nsuit their needs.  Right now the min/max is hardcoded to 2/8.  While\nprobably a fair estimate for smaller machines, large machines with large\nnumbers of CPUs and large numbers of filesystems/block devices may benefit\nfrom larger numbers of threads working on different block devices.\n\nEven if the background flushing algorithm is radically changed, it is\nstill likely that multiple threads will be involved and admins would still\ndesire finer control on the min/max other than to have to recompile the\nkernel.\n\nThe patch adds \u0027/proc/sys/vm/nr_pdflush_threads_min\u0027 and\n\u0027/proc/sys/vm/nr_pdflush_threads_max\u0027 with r/w permissions.\n\nThe minimum value for nr_pdflush_threads_min is 1 and the maximum value is\nthe current value of nr_pdflush_threads_max.       "message": "NOMMU: Make mmap allocation page trimming behaviour configurable.\n\nNOMMU mmap allocates a piece of memory for an mmap that\u0027s rounded up in size to\nthe nearest power-of-2 number of pages.  Currently it then discards the excess\npages back to the page allocator, making that memory available for use by other\nthings.  This can, however, cause greater amount of fragmentation.\n\nTo counter this, a sysctl is added in order to fine-tune the trimming\nbehaviour.       "message": "mm: add dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes sysctls\n\nThis change introduces two new sysctls to /proc/sys/vm:\ndirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes.\n\ndirty_background_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_background_ratio and\ndirty_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_ratio.\n\nWith growing memory capacities of individual machines, it\u0027s no longer\nsufficient to specify dirty thresholds as a percentage of the amount of\ndirtyable memory over the entire system.\n\ndirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes specify quantities of memory, in\nbytes, that represent the dirty limits for the entire system.  If either\nof these values is set, its value represents the amount of dirty memory\nthat is needed to commence either background or direct writeback.\n\nWhen a `bytes\u0027 or `ratio\u0027 file is written, its counterpart becomes a\nfunction of the written value.  For example, if dirty_bytes is written to\nbe 8096, 8K of memory is required to commence direct writeback.\ndirty_ratio is then functionally equivalent to 8K / the amount of\ndirtyable memory:\n\n\tdirtyable_memory \u003d free pages + mapped pages + file cache\n\n\tdirty_background_bytes \u003d dirty_background_ratio * dirtyable_memory\n\t\t-or-\n\tdirty_background_ratio \u003d dirty_background_bytes / dirtyable_memory\n\n\t\tAND\n\n\tdirty_bytes \u003d dirty_ratio * dirtyable_memory\n\t\t-or-\n\tdirty_ratio \u003d dirty_bytes / dirtyable_memory\n\nOnly one of dirty_background_bytes and dirty_background_ratio may be\nspecified at a time, and only one of dirty_bytes and dirty_ratio may be\nspecified.  When one sysctl is written, the other appears as 0 when read.\n\nThe `bytes\u0027 files operate on a page size granularity since dirty limits\nare compared with ZVC values, which are in page units.\n\nPrior to this change, the minimum dirty_ratio was 5 as implemented by\nget_dirty_limits() although /proc/sys/vm/dirty_ratio would show any user\nwritten value between 0 and 100.  This restriction is maintained, but\ndirty_bytes has a lower limit of only one page.\n\nAlso prior to this change, the dirty_background_ratio could not equal or\nexceed dirty_ratio.  This restriction is maintained in addition to\nrestricting dirty_background_bytes.       "message": "[PATCH] zone_reclaim: dynamic slab reclaim\n\nCurrently one can enable slab reclaim by setting an explicit option in\n/proc/sys/vm/zone_reclaim_mode.  Slab reclaim is then used as a final\noption if the freeing of unmapped file backed pages is not enough to free\nenough pages to allow a local allocation.\n\nHowever, that means that the slab can grow excessively and that most memory\nof a node may be used by slabs.  We have had a case where a machine with\n46GB of memory was using 40-42GB for slab.  Zone reclaim was effective in\ndealing with pagecache pages.  However, slab reclaim was only done during\nglobal reclaim (which is a bit rare on NUMA systems).\n\nThis patch implements slab reclaim during zone reclaim.  Zone reclaim\noccurs if there is a danger of an off node allocation.  At that point we\n\n1. Shrink the per node page cache if the number of pagecache\n   pages is more than min_unmapped_ratio percent of pages in a zone.\n\n2. Shrink the slab cache if the number of the nodes reclaimable slab pages\n   (patch depends on earlier one that implements that counter)\n   are more than min_slab_ratio (a new /proc/sys/vm tunable).\n\nThe shrinking of the slab cache is a bit problematic since it is not node\nspecific.  So we simply calculate what point in the slab we want to reach\n(current per node slab use minus the number of pages that neeed to be\nallocated) and then repeately run the global reclaim until that is\nunsuccessful or we have reached the limit.       "message": "[PATCH] ZVC/zone_reclaim: Leave 1% of unmapped pagecache pages for file I/O\n\nIt turns out that it is advantageous to leave a small portion of unmapped file\nbacked pages if all of a zone\u0027s pages (or almost all pages) are allocated and\nso the page allocator has to go off-node.\n\nThis allows recently used file I/O buffers to stay on the node and\nreduces the times that zone reclaim is invoked if file I/O occurs\nwhen we run out of memory in a zone.\n\nThe problem is that zone reclaim runs too frequently when the page cache is\nused for file I/O (read write and therefore unmapped pages!) alone and we have\nalmost all pages of the zone allocated.  Zone reclaim may remove 32 unmapped\npages.  File I/O will use these pages for the next read/write requests and the\nunmapped pages increase.  After the zone has filled up again zone reclaim will\nremove it again after only 32 pages.  This cycle is too inefficient and there\nare potentially too many zone reclaim cycles.\n\nWith the 1% boundary we may still remove all unmapped pages for file I/O in\nzone reclaim pass.       "message": "[PATCH] Make high and batch sizes of per_cpu_pagelists configurable\n\nAs recently there has been lot of traffic on the right values for batch and\nhigh water marks for per_cpu_pagelists.  This patch makes these two\nvariables configurable through /proc interface.\n\nA new tunable /proc/sys/vm/percpu_pagelist_fraction is added.  This entry\ncontrols the fraction of pages at most in each zone that are allocated for\neach per cpu page list.  The min value for this is 8.  It means that we\ndon\u0027t allow more than 1/8th of pages in each zone to be allocated in any\nsingle per_cpu_pagelist.\n\nThe batch value of each per cpu pagelist is also updated as a result.       "message": "[PATCH] setuid core dump\n\nAdd a new `suid_dumpable\u0027 sysctl:\n\nThis value can be used to query and set the core dump mode for setuid\nor otherwise protected/tainted binaries. The modes are\n\n0 - (default) - traditional behaviour.  Any process which has changed\n    privilege levels or is execute only will not be dumped\n\n1 - (debug) - all processes dump core when possible.  The core dump is\n    owned by the current user and no security is applied.  This is intended\n    for system debugging situations only.  Ptrace is unchecked.\n\n2 - (suidsafe) - any binary which normally would not be dumped is dumped\n    readable by root only.  This allows the end user to remove such a dump but\n    not access it directly.  For security reasons core dumps in this mode will\n    not overwrite one another or other files.
