      "message": "[PATCH] vDSO hash-style fix\n\nThe latest toolchains can produce a new ELF section in DSOs and\ndynamically-linked executables.  The new section \".gnu.hash\" replaces\n\".hash\", and allows for more efficient runtime symbol lookups by the\ndynamic linker.  The new ld option --hash-style\u003d{sysv|gnu|both} controls\nwhether to produce the old \".hash\", the new \".gnu.hash\", or both.  In some\nnew systems such as Fedora Core 6, gcc by default passes --hash-style\u003dgnu\nto the linker, so that a standard invocation of \"gcc -shared\" results in\nproducing a DSO with only \".gnu.hash\".  The new \".gnu.hash\" sections need\nto be dealt with the same way as \".hash\" sections in all respects; only the\ndynamic linker cares about their contents.  To work with older dynamic\nlinkers (i.e.  preexisting releases of glibc), a binary must have the old\n\".hash\" section.  The --hash-style\u003dboth option produces binaries that a new\ndynamic linker can use more efficiently, but an old dynamic linker can\nstill handle.\n\nThe new section runs afoul of the custom linker scripts used to build vDSO\nimages for the kernel.  On ia64, the failure mode for this is a boot-time\npanic because the vDSO\u0027s PT_IA_64_UNWIND segment winds up ill-formed.\n\nThis patch addresses the problem in two ways.\n\nFirst, it mentions \".gnu.hash\" in all the linker scripts alongside \".hash\".\n This produces correct vDSO images with --hash-style\u003dsysv (or old tools),\nwith --hash-style\u003dgnu, or with --hash-style\u003dboth.\n\nSecond, it passes the --hash-style\u003dsysv option when building the vDSO\nimages, so that \".gnu.hash\" is not actually produced.  This is the most\nconservative choice for compatibility with any old userland.  There is some\nconcern that some ancient glibc builds (though not any known old production\nsystem) might choke on --hash-style\u003dboth binaries.  The optimizations\nprovided by the new style of hash section do not really matter for a DSO\nwith a tiny number of symbols, as the vDSO has.       "message": "[PATCH] panic_on_oops: remove ssleep()\n\nThis patch is part of an effort to unify the panic_on_oops behaviour across\nall architectures that implement it.\n\nIt was pointed out to me by Andi Kleen that if an oops has occured in\ninterrupt context, then calling sleep() in the oops path will only cause a\npanic, and that it would be really better for it not to be in the path at\nall.\n\nThis patch removes the ssleep() call and reworks the console message\naccordinly.       "message": "[PATCH] genirq: rename desc-\u003ehandler to desc-\u003echip\n\nThis patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding\nvarious abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing\nfunctionality.\n\nWhile the queue can be best described as \"fix and improve everything in the\ngeneric IRQ layer that we could think of\", and thus it consists of many\nsmaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is\nthe new \u0027irq chip\u0027 abstraction.\n\nThe irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller\ndriver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a\nstraightforward way, without having to think about \"IRQ flow\"\n(level/edge/etc.) type of details.\n\nThis stands in contrast with the current \u0027irq-type\u0027 model of genirq\narchitectures, which \u0027mixes\u0027 raw hardware capabilities with \u0027flow\u0027 details.\nThe patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and\nconverts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design.\n\nAs a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers\n(master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well.\n\nThe end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code\nand more consolidation between architectures.\n\nWe reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King\u0027s ARM IRQ\nlayer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset.\n\nThis patch:\n\nrename desc-\u003ehandler to desc-\u003echip.\n\nOriginally i did not want to do this, because it\u0027s a big patch.  But having\nboth \"desc-\u003ehandler\", \"desc-\u003ehandle_irq\" and \"action-\u003ehandler\" caused a\nlarge degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it\ntruly is.\n\nI have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a\ndesc-\u003echip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke\nfrequently.\n\nSo lets get over with this quickly.       "message": "[PATCH] node hotplug: register cpu: remove node struct\n\nWith Goto-san\u0027s patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime.  I\u0027m now\nconsidering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI.\n\nI found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before\nmemory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add.\n\nIn most part, cpu-hot-add doesn\u0027t depend on node hot add.  But register_cpu(),\nwhich creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be\nonlined before register_cpu().  When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be\nthere.\n\nThis patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu\nuntil node is onlined.\n\nThis removes node arguments from register_cpu().\n\nNow, register_cpu() requires \u0027struct node\u0027 as its argument.  But the array of\nstruct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto\u0027s node hotplug\npatch).  We can get struct node in generic way.  So, this argument is not\nnecessary now.\n\nThis patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined.  It\nis necessary for node-hot-add vs.  cpu-hot-add patch following this.\n\nMoreover, register_cpu calculates cpu-\u003enode_id by cpu_to_node() without regard\nto its \u0027struct node *root\u0027 argument. I think that is caused by the atomic operations\nto clear/set the polling flag in thread_info. There is actually\nno reason to make this atomic - only the idle thread does it\nto itself, other CPUs only read it.       "message": "[PATCH] page migration: sys_move_pages(): support moving of individual pages\n\nmove_pages() is used to move individual pages of a process. The function can\nbe used to determine the location of pages and to move them onto the desired\nnode. move_pages() returns status information for each page.\n\nlong move_pages(pid, number_of_pages_to_move,\n\t\taddresses_of_pages[],\n\t\tnodes[] or NULL,\n\t\tstatus[],\n\t\tflags);\n\nThe addresses of pages is an array of void * pointing to the\npages to be moved.\n\nThe nodes array contains the node numbers that the pages should be moved\nto. If a NULL is passed instead of an array then no pages are moved but\nthe status array is updated. The status request may be used to determine\nthe page state before issuing another move_pages() to move pages.\n\nThe status array will contain the state of all individual page migration\nattempts when the function terminates. The status array is only valid if\nmove_pages() completed successfullly.\n\nPossible page states in status[]:\n\n0..MAX_NUMNODES\tThe page is now on the indicated node.\n\n-ENOENT\t\tPage is not present\n\n-EACCES\t\tPage is mapped by multiple processes and can only\n\t\tbe moved if MPOL_MF_MOVE_ALL is specified.\n\n-EPERM\t\tThe page has been mlocked by a process/driver and\n\t\tcannot be moved.\n\n-EBUSY\t\tPage is busy and cannot be moved.       "message": "[PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mount\n\nExtend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that\npermits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint.\n\nThe filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry\npointers.  For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt()\nwhich will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the\nsuperblock\u0027s s_root (as per the old default behaviour).\n\nThe get_sb() op now returns an integer as there\u0027s now no need to return the\nsuperblock pointer.\n\nThis patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount\npoints, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing.  In\nsuch a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root\nand mnt_sb would be set directly.\n\nThe patch also makes the following changes:\n\n (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount\n     pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change\n     very little.\n\n (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should\n     normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will\n     always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb().\n\n (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the\n     dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon().\n\n     This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that\n     aren\u0027t actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. This keeps X from working\n    on the Intel Tiger box.\n\n  - The current kernel allows UC mmap of the 0-1MB region of\n    /sys/.../legacy_mem even when the chipset doesn\u0027t support UC\n    access.       "message": "[PATCH] Notifier chain update: API changes\n\nThe kernel\u0027s implementation of notifier chains is unsafe.  There is no\nprotection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the\nchain is in use.  The issues were discussed in this thread:\n\n    http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l\u003dlinux-kernel\u0026m\u003d113018709002036\u0026w\u003d2\n\nWe noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage\nclasses:\n\n\t\"Blocking\" chains are always called from a process context\n\tand the callout routines are allowed to sleep;\n\n\t\"Atomic\" chains can be called from an atomic context and\n\tthe callout routines are not allowed to sleep.\n\nWe decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API.  Therefore\nthis set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking\nnotifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for \"raw\" notifiers (which is\nreally just the old API under a new name).  New kinds of data structures are\nused for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for\nregistration, unregistration, and calling a chain.  The three APIs are\nexplained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in\nkernel/sys.c.\n\nWith atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain\nlinks will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by\nentries being added or removed.  For raw chains the implementation provides no\nguarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections.  (The\nidea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and\nblocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to\nhandle these things in their own way.)\n\nThere are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with.  For\natomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in\na process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem.  Also, a\ncallout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister\nentries on its own chain.  (This did happen in a couple of places and the code\nhad to be changed to avoid it.)\n\nSince atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use\nspinlocks for synchronization.  Instead we use RCU.  The overhead falls almost\nentirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much\nless frequent that calling a chain.\n\nHere is the list of chains that we adjusted and their classifications.       "message": "[PATCH] EFI: keep physical table addresses in efi structure\n\nAlmost all users of the table addresses from the EFI system table want\nphysical addresses.  So rather than doing the pa-\u003eva-\u003epa conversion, just keep\nphysical addresses in struct efi.\n\nThis fixes a DMI bug: the efi structure contained the physical SMBIOS address\non x86 but the virtual address on ia64, so dmi_scan_machine() used ioremap()\non a virtual address on ia64.\n\nThis is essentially the same as an earlier patch by Matt Tolentino:\n\thttp://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l\u003dlinux-kernel\u0026m\u003d112130292316281\u0026w\u003d2\nexcept that this changes all table addresses, not just ACPI addresses.\n\nMatt\u0027s original patch was backed out because it caused MCAs on HP sx1000\nsystems.       "message": "[PATCH] ia64: use i386 dmi_scan.c\n\nEnable DMI table parsing on ia64.\n\nAndi Kleen has a patch in his x86_64 tree which enables the use of i386\ndmi_scan.c on x86_64.  dmi_scan.c functions are being used by the\ndrivers/char/ipmi/ipmi_si_intf.c driver for autodetecting the ports or\nmemory spaces where the IPMI controllers may be found.\n\nThis patch adds equivalent changes for ia64 as to what is in the x86_64\ntree.  In addition, I reworked the DMI detection, such that on EFI-capable\nsystems, it uses the efi.smbios pointer to find the table, rather than\nbrute-force searching from 0xF0000.  On non-EFI systems, it continues the\nbrute-force search.\n\nMy test system, an Intel S870BN4 \u0027Tiger4\u0027, aka Dell PowerEdge 7250, with\nlatest BIOS, does not list the IPMI controller in the ACPI namespace, nor\ndoes it have an ACPI SPMI table.       "message": "[IA64] MCA recovery: kernel context recovery table\n\nMemory errors encountered by user applications may surface\nwhen the CPU is running in kernel context.  The current code\nwill not attempt recovery if the MCA surfaces in kernel\ncontext (privilage mode 0).  This patch adds a check for cases\nwhere the user initiated the load that surfaces in kernel\ninterrupt code.\n\nAn example is a user process lauching a load from memory\nand the data in memory had bad ECC.  Before the bad data\ngets to the CPU register, and interrupt comes in.  The\ncode jumps to the IVT interrupt entry point and begins\nexecution in kernel context.  The process of saving the\nuser registers (SAVE_REST) causes the bad data to be loaded\ninto a CPU register, triggering the MCA.  The MCA surfaces in\nkernel context, even though the load was initiated from\nuser context.\n\nAs suggested by David and Tony, this patch uses an exception\ntable like approach, puting the tagged recovery addresses in\na searchable table.  One difference from the exception table\nis that MCAs do not surface in precise places (such as with\na TLB miss), so instead of tagging specific instructions,\naddress ranges are registers.  A single macro is used to do\nthe tagging, with the input parameter being the label\nof the starting address and the macro being the ending\naddress.  This limits clutter in the code.\n\nThis patch only tags one spot, the interrupt ivt entry.\nTesting showed that spot to be a \"heavy hitter\" with\nMCAs surfacing while saving user registers.
