      "message": "[S390] Vertical cpu management.\n\nIf vertical cpu polarization is active then the hypervisor will\ndispatch certain cpus for a longer time than other cpus for maximum\nperformance. For example if a guest would have three virtual cpus,\neach of them with a share of 33 percent, then in case of vertical\ncpu polarization all of the processing time would be combined to a\nsingle cpu which would run all the time, while the other two cpus\nwould get nearly no cpu time.\n\nThere are three different types of vertical cpus: high, medium and\nlow. Low cpus hardly get any real cpu time, while high cpus get a\nfull real cpu. Medium cpus get something in between.\n\nIn order to switch between the two possible modes (default is\nhorizontal) a 0 for horizontal polarization or a 1 for vertical\npolarization must be written to the dispatching sysfs attribute:\n\n/sys/devices/system/cpu/dispatching\n\nThe polarization of each single cpu can be figured out by the\npolarization sysfs attribute of each cpu:\n\n/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/polarization\n\nhorizontal, vertical:high, vertical:medium, vertical:low or unknown.\n\nWhen switching polarization the polarization attribute may contain\nthe value unknown until the configuration change is done and the\nkernel has figured out the new polarization of each cpu.\n\nNote that running a system with different types of vertical cpus may\nresult in significant performance regressions. If possible only one\ntype of vertical cpus should be used.       "message": "[S390] noexec protection\n\nThis provides a noexec protection on s390 hardware. Our hardware does\nnot have any bits left in the pte for a hw noexec bit, so this is a\ndifferent approach using shadow page tables and a special addressing\nmode that allows separate address spaces for code and data.\n\nAs a special feature of our \"secondary-space\" addressing mode, separate\npage tables can be specified for the translation of data addresses\n(storage operands) and instruction addresses. The shadow page table is\nused for the instruction addresses and the standard page table for the\ndata addresses.\nThe shadow page table is linked to the standard page table by a pointer\nin page-\u003elru.next of the struct page corresponding to the page that\ncontains the standard page table (since page-\u003eprivate is not really\nprivate with the pte_lock and the page table pages are not in the LRU\nlist).\nDepending on the software bits of a pte, it is either inserted into\nboth page tables or just into the standard (data) page table. Pages of\na vma that does not have the VM_EXEC bit set get mapped only in the\ndata address space. Any try to execute code on such a page will cause a\npage translation exception. The standard reaction to this is a SIGSEGV\nwith two exceptions: the two system call opcodes 0x0a77 (sys_sigreturn)\nand 0x0aad (sys_rt_sigreturn) are allowed. They are stored by the\nkernel to the signal stack frame. Unfortunately, the signal return\nmechanism cannot be modified to use an SA_RESTORER because the\nexception unwinding code depends on the system call opcode stored\nbehind the signal stack frame.\n\nThis feature requires that user space is executed in secondary-space\nmode and the kernel in home-space mode, which means that the addressing\nmodes need to be switched and that the noexec protection only works\nfor user space.\nAfter switching the addressing modes, we cannot use the mvcp/mvcs\ninstructions anymore to copy between kernel and user space.       "message": "[PATCH] smp_processor_id() cleanup\n\nThis patch implements a number of smp_processor_id() cleanup ideas that\nArjan van de Ven and I came up with.\n\nThe previous __smp_processor_id/_smp_processor_id/smp_processor_id API\nspaghetti was hard to follow both on the implementational and on the\nusage side.\n\nSome of the complexity arose from picking wrong names, some of the\ncomplexity comes from the fact that not all architectures defined\n__smp_processor_id.\n\nIn the new code, there are two externally visible symbols:\n\n - smp_processor_id(): debug variant.\n\n - raw_smp_processor_id(): nondebug variant. Replaces all existing\n   uses of _smp_processor_id() and __smp_processor_id(). Defined\n   by every SMP architecture in include/asm-*/smp.h.\n\nThere is one new internal symbol, dependent on DEBUG_PREEMPT:\n\n - debug_smp_processor_id(): internal debug variant, mapped to\n                             smp_processor_id().\n\nAlso, i moved debug_smp_processor_id() from lib/kernel_lock.c into a new\nlib/smp_processor_id.c file.  All related comments got updated and/or\nclarified.\n\nI have build/boot tested the following 8 .config combinations on x86:\n\n {SMP,UP} x {PREEMPT,!PREEMPT} x {DEBUG_PREEMPT,!DEBUG_PREEMPT}\n\nI have also build/boot tested x64 on UP/PREEMPT/DEBUG_PREEMPT.
