      "message": "Make forced module loading optional\n\nThe kernel module loader used to be much too happy to allow loading of\nmodules for the wrong kernel version by default.  For example, if you\nhad MODVERSIONS enabled, but tried to load a module with no version\ninfo, it would happily load it and taint the kernel - whether it was\nlikely to actually work or not!\n\nGenerally, such forced module loading should be considered a really\nreally bad idea, so make it conditional on a new config option\n(MODULE_FORCE_LOAD), and make it default to off.\n\nIf somebody really wants to force module loads, that\u0027s their problem,\nbut we should not encourage it.       "message": "cgroups: add an owner to the mm_struct\n\nRemove the mem_cgroup member from mm_struct and instead adds an owner.\n\nThis approach was suggested by Paul Menage.  The advantage of this approach\nis that, once the mm-\u003eowner is known, using the subsystem id, the cgroup\ncan be determined.  It also allows several control groups that are\nvirtually grouped by mm_struct, to exist independent of the memory\ncontroller i.e., without adding mem_cgroup\u0027s for each controller, to\nmm_struct.\n\nA new config option CONFIG_MM_OWNER is added and the memory resource\ncontroller selects this config option.\n\nThis patch also adds cgroup callbacks to notify subsystems when mm-\u003eowner\nchanges.       "message": "cgroups: implement device whitelist\n\nImplement a cgroup to track and enforce open and mknod restrictions on device\nfiles.  A device cgroup associates a device access whitelist with each cgroup.\n A whitelist entry has 4 fields.  \u0027type\u0027 is a (all), c (char), or b (block).\n\u0027all\u0027 means it applies to all types and all major and minor numbers.  Major\nand minor are either an integer or * for all.  Access is a composition of r\n(read), w (write), and m (mknod).\n\nThe root device cgroup starts with rwm to \u0027all\u0027.  A child devcg gets a copy of\nthe parent.  Admins can then remove devices from the whitelist or add new\nentries.  A child cgroup can never receive a device access which is denied its\nparent.  However when a device access is removed from a parent it will not\nalso be removed from the child(ren).\n\nAn entry is added using devices.allow, and removed using\ndevices.deny.  For instance\n\n\techo \u0027c 1:3 mr\u0027 \u003e /cgroups/1/devices.allow\n\nallows cgroup 1 to read and mknod the device usually known as\n/dev/null.  Doing\n\n\techo a \u003e /cgroups/1/devices.deny\n\nwill remove the default \u0027a *:* mrw\u0027 entry.\n\nCAP_SYS_ADMIN is needed to change permissions or move another task to a new\ncgroup.  A cgroup may not be granted more permissions than the cgroup\u0027s parent\nhas.  Any task can move itself between cgroups. This choice was therefore moved to\ninit/Kconfig, which worked, but placed the choice between classic and\npreemptible RCU at the top level, a very obtuse choice indeed.\n\nThis patch changes from the Kconfig \"choice\" mechanism to a pair of booleans,\nonly one of which (CONFIG_PREEMPT_RCU) is user-visible, and is located in\nkernel/Kconfig.preempt, where one would expect it to be.  The other\n(CONFIG_CLASSIC_RCU) is in init/Kconfig so that it is available to all\narchitectures, hopefully avoiding build breakage.       "message": "namespaces: move the IPC namespace under IPC_NS option\n\nCurrently the IPC namespace management code is spread over the ipc/*.c files.\nI moved this code into ipc/namespace.c file which is compiled out when needed.\n\nThe linux/ipc_namespace.h file is used to store the prototypes of the\nfunctions in namespace.c and the stubs for NAMESPACES\u003dn case.  This is done\nso, because the stub for copy_ipc_namespace requires the knowledge of the\nCLONE_NEWIPC flag, which is in sched.h.  But the linux/ipc.h file itself in\nincluded into many many .c files via the sys.h-\u003esem.h sequence so adding the\nsched.h into it will make all these .c depend on sched.h which is not that\ngood.  On the other hand the knowledge about the namespaces stuff is required\nin 4 .c files only.\n\nBesides, this patch compiles out some auxiliary functions from ipc/sem.c,\nmsg.c and shm.c files.  It turned out that moving these functions into\nnamespaces.c is not that easy because they use many other calls and macros\nfrom the original file.  Moving them would make this patch complicated.       "message": "sched: cpu accounting controller (V2)\n\nCommit cfb5285660aad4931b2ebbfa902ea48a37dfffa1 removed a useful feature for\nus, which provided a cpu accounting resource controller.  This feature would be\nuseful if someone wants to group tasks only for accounting purpose and doesnt\nreally want to exercise any control over their cpu consumption.\n\nThe patch below reintroduces the feature. It is based on Paul Menage\u0027s\noriginal patch (Commit 62d0df64065e7c135d0002f069444fbdfc64768f), with\nthese differences:\n\n        - Removed load average information. I felt it needs more thought (esp\n\t  to deal with SMP and virtualized platforms) and can be added for\n\t  2.6.25 after more discussions.\n        - Convert group cpu usage to be nanosecond accurate (as rest of the cfs\n\t  stats are) and invoke cpuacct_charge() from the respective scheduler\n\t  classes\n\t- Make accounting scalable on SMP systems by splitting the usage\n\t  counter to be per-cpu\n\t- Move the code from kernel/cpu_acct.c to kernel/sched.c (since the\n\t  code is not big enough to warrant a new file and also this rightly\n\t  needs to live inside the scheduler. Also things like accessing\n\t  rq-\u003elock while reading cpu usage becomes easier if the code lived in\n\t  kernel/sched.c)\n\nThe patch also modifies the cpu controller not to provide the same accounting\ninformation.\n\nTested-by: Balbir Singh \u003cbalbir@linux.vnet.ibm.com\u003e\n\n Tested the patches on top of 2.6.24-rc3.       "message": "Task Control Groups: basic task cgroup framework\n\nGeneric Process Control Groups\n--------------------------\n\nThere have recently been various proposals floating around for\nresource management/accounting and other task grouping subsystems in\nthe kernel, including ResGroups, User BeanCounters, NSProxy\ncgroups, and others.       "message": "signal/timer/event: eventfd core\n\nThis is a very simple and light file descriptor, that can be used as event\nwait/dispatch by userspace (both wait and dispatch) and by the kernel\n(dispatch only).  It can be used instead of pipe(2) in all cases where those\nwould simply be used to signal events.  Their kernel overhead is much lower\nthan pipes, and they do not consume two fds.  When used in the kernel, it can\noffer an fd-bridge to enable, for example, functionalities like KAIO or\nsyslets/threadlets to signal to an fd the completion of certain operations.\nBut more in general, an eventfd can be used by the kernel to signal readiness,\nin a POSIX poll/select way, of interfaces that would otherwise be incompatible\nwith it.  The API is:\n\nint eventfd(unsigned int count);\n\nThe eventfd API accepts an initial \"count\" parameter, and returns an eventfd\nfd.  It supports poll(2) (POLLIN, POLLOUT, POLLERR), read(2) and write(2).\n\nThe POLLIN flag is raised when the internal counter is greater than zero.\n\nThe POLLOUT flag is raised when at least a value of \"1\" can be written to the\ninternal counter.\n\nThe POLLERR flag is raised when an overflow in the counter value is detected.\n\nThe write(2) operation can never overflow the counter, since it blocks (unless\nO_NONBLOCK is set, in which case -EAGAIN is returned).\n\nBut the eventfd_signal() function can do it, since it\u0027s supposed to not sleep\nduring its operation.\n\nThe read(2) function reads the __u64 counter value, and reset the internal\nvalue to zero.  If the value read is equal to (__u64) -1, an overflow happened\non the internal counter (due to 2^64 eventfd_signal() posts that has never\nbeen retired - unlickely, but possible).\n\nThe write(2) call writes an __u64 count value, and adds it to the current\ncounter.  The eventfd fd supports O_NONBLOCK also.\n\nOn the kernel side, we have:\n\nstruct file *eventfd_fget(int fd);\nint eventfd_signal(struct file *file, unsigned int n);\n\nThe eventfd_fget() should be called to get a struct file* from an eventfd fd\n(this is an fget() + check of f_op being an eventfd fops pointer).\n\nThe kernel can then call eventfd_signal() every time it wants to post an event\nto userspace. This allows timer event to be used with standard POSIX\npoll(2), select(2) and read(2).  As a consequence of supporting the Linux\nf_op-\u003epoll subsystem, they can be used with epoll(2) too.\n\nThe system call is defined as:\n\nint timerfd(int ufd, int clockid, int flags, const struct itimerspec *utmr);\n\nThe \"ufd\" parameter allows for re-use (re-programming) of an existing timerfd\nw/out going through the close/open cycle (same as signalfd). The time\nspecified in the \"utmr-\u003eit_value\" parameter is the expiry time for the timer.\n\nIf the TFD_TIMER_ABSTIME flag is set in \"flags\", this is an absolute time,\notherwise it\u0027s a relative time.\n\nIf the time specified in the \"utmr-\u003eit_interval\" is not zero (.tv_sec \u003d\u003d 0,\ntv_nsec \u003d\u003d 0), this is the period at which the following ticks should be\ngenerated.\n\nThe \"utmr-\u003eit_interval\" should be set to zero if only one tick is requested.\nSetting the \"utmr-\u003eit_value\" to zero will disable the timer, or will create a\ntimerfd without the timer enabled.\n\nThe function returns the new (or same, in case \"ufd\" is a valid timerfd\ndescriptor) file, or -1 in case of error.\n\nAs stated before, the timerfd file descriptor supports poll(2), select(2) and\nepoll(2).  When a timer event happened on the timerfd, a POLLIN mask will be\nreturned.\n\nThe read(2) call can be used, and it will return a u32 variable holding the\nnumber of \"ticks\" that happened on the interface since the last call to\nread(2). If you want to reliably fetch signals on\nthe signalfd file, you need to block them with sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK).  This\nseems to be working fine on my Dual Opteron machine.  I made a quick test\nprogram for it:\n\nhttp://www.xmailserver.org/signafd-test.c\n\nThe signalfd() system call implements signal delivery into a file descriptor\nreceiver.  The signalfd file descriptor if created with the following API:\n\nint signalfd(int ufd, const sigset_t *mask, size_t masksize);\n\nThe \"ufd\" parameter allows to change an existing signalfd sigmask, w/out going\nto close/create cycle (Linus idea).  Use \"ufd\" \u003d\u003d -1 if you want a brand new\nsignalfd file.\n\nThe \"mask\" allows to specify the signal mask of signals that we are interested\nin.  The \"masksize\" parameter is the size of \"mask\".\n\nThe signalfd fd supports the poll(2) and read(2) system calls.  The poll(2)\nwill return POLLIN when signals are available to be dequeued.  As a direct\nconsequence of supporting the Linux poll subsystem, the signalfd fd can use\nused together with epoll(2) too.\n\nThe read(2) system call will return a \"struct signalfd_siginfo\" structure in\nthe userspace supplied buffer.  The return value is the number of bytes copied\nin the supplied buffer, or -1 in case of error.  The read(2) call can also\nreturn 0, in case the sighand structure to which the signalfd was attached,\nhas been orphaned.  The O_NONBLOCK flag is also supported, and read(2) will\nreturn -EAGAIN in case no signal is available.\n\nIf the size of the buffer passed to read(2) is lower than sizeof(struct\nsignalfd_siginfo), -EINVAL is returned.  A read from the signalfd can also\nreturn -ERESTARTSYS in case a signal hits the process.       "message": "SLUB core\n\nThis is a new slab allocator which was motivated by the complexity of the\nexisting code in mm/slab.c. It attempts to address a variety of concerns\nwith the existing implementation.\n\nA. Management of object queues\n\n   A particular concern was the complex management of the numerous object\n   queues in SLAB. SLUB has no such queues. Instead we dedicate a slab for\n   each allocating CPU and use objects from a slab directly instead of\n   queueing them up.\n\nB. Storage overhead of object queues\n\n   SLAB Object queues exist per node, per CPU. The alien cache queue even\n   has a queue array that contain a queue for each processor on each\n   node. For very large systems the number of queues and the number of\n   objects that may be caught in those queues grows exponentially. On our\n   systems with 1k nodes / processors we have several gigabytes just tied up\n   for storing references to objects for those queues  This does not include\n   the objects that could be on those queues. One fears that the whole\n   memory of the machine could one day be consumed by those queues.\n\nC. SLAB meta data overhead\n\n   SLAB has overhead at the beginning of each slab. This means that data\n   cannot be naturally aligned at the beginning of a slab block. SLUB keeps\n   all meta data in the corresponding page_struct. Objects can be naturally\n   aligned in the slab. F.e. a 128 byte object will be aligned at 128 byte\n   boundaries and can fit tightly into a 4k page with no bytes left over.\n   SLAB cannot do this.\n\nD. SLAB has a complex cache reaper\n\n   SLUB does not need a cache reaper for UP systems. On SMP systems\n   the per CPU slab may be pushed back into partial list but that\n   operation is simple and does not require an iteration over a list\n   of objects. SLAB expires per CPU, shared and alien object queues\n   during cache reaping which may cause strange hold offs.\n\nE. SLAB has complex NUMA policy layer support\n\n   SLUB pushes NUMA policy handling into the page allocator. This means that\n   allocation is coarser (SLUB does interleave on a page level) but that\n   situation was also present before 2.6.13. SLABs application of\n   policies to individual slab objects allocated in SLAB is\n   certainly a performance concern due to the frequent references to\n   memory policies which may lead a sequence of objects to come from\n   one node after another. SLUB will get a slab full of objects\n   from one node and then will switch to the next.\n\nF. Reduction of the size of partial slab lists\n\n   SLAB has per node partial lists. This means that over time a large\n   number of partial slabs may accumulate on those lists. These can\n   only be reused if allocator occur on specific nodes. SLUB has a global\n   pool of partial slabs and will consume slabs from that pool to\n   decrease fragmentation.\n\nG. Tunables\n\n   SLAB has sophisticated tuning abilities for each slab cache. One can\n   manipulate the queue sizes in detail. However, filling the queues still\n   requires the uses of the spin lock to check out slabs. SLUB has a global\n   parameter (min_slab_order) for tuning. Increasing the minimum slab\n   order can decrease the locking overhead. The bigger the slab order the\n   less motions of pages between per CPU and partial lists occur and the\n   better SLUB will be scaling.\n\nG. Slab merging\n\n   We often have slab caches with similar parameters. SLUB detects those\n   on boot up and merges them into the corresponding general caches. This\n   leads to more effective memory use. About 50% of all caches can\n   be eliminated through slab merging. This will also decrease\n   slab fragmentation because partial allocated slabs can be filled\n   up again. Slab merging can be switched off by specifying\n   slub_nomerge on boot up.\n\n   Note that merging can expose heretofore unknown bugs in the kernel\n   because corrupted objects may now be placed differently and corrupt\n   differing neighboring objects. Enable sanity checks to find those.\n\nH. Diagnostics\n\n   The current slab diagnostics are difficult to use and require a\n   recompilation of the kernel. SLUB contains debugging code that\n   is always available (but is kept out of the hot code paths).\n   SLUB diagnostics can be enabled via the \"slab_debug\" option.\n   Parameters can be specified to select a single or a group of\n   slab caches for diagnostics. This means that the system is running\n   with the usual performance and it is much more likely that\n   race conditions can be reproduced.\n\nI. Resiliency\n\n   If basic sanity checks are on then SLUB is capable of detecting\n   common error conditions and recover as best as possible to allow the\n   system to continue.\n\nJ. Tracing\n\n   Tracing can be enabled via the slab_debug\u003dT,\u003cslabcache\u003e option\n   during boot. SLUB will then protocol all actions on that slabcache\n   and dump the object contents on free.\n\nK. On demand DMA cache creation.\n\n   Generally DMA caches are not needed. If a kmalloc is used with\n   __GFP_DMA then just create this single slabcache that is needed.\n   For systems that have no ZONE_DMA requirement the support is\n   completely eliminated.\n\nL. Performance increase\n\n   Some benchmarks have shown speed improvements on kernbench in the\n   range of 5-10%. The locking overhead of slub is based on the\n   underlying base allocation size. If we can reliably allocate\n   larger order pages then it is possible to increase slub\n   performance much further. The anti-fragmentation patches may\n   enable further performance increases.\n\nTested on:\ni386 UP + SMP, x86_64 UP + SMP + NUMA emulation, IA64 NUMA + Simulator\n\nSLUB Boot options\n\nslub_nomerge\t\tDisable merging of slabs\nslub_min_order\u003dx\tRequire a minimum order for slab caches. This\n\t\t\tincreases the managed chunk size and therefore\n\t\t\treduces meta data and locking overhead.\nslub_min_objects\u003dx\tMininum objects per slab.       "message": "[PATCH] disable init/initramfs.c\n\nThe file init/initramfs.c is always compiled and linked in the kernel\nvmlinux even when BLK_DEV_RAM and BLK_DEV_INITRD are disabled and the\nsystem isn\u0027t using any form of an initramfs or initrd.  In this situation\nthe code is only used to unpack a (static) default initial rootfilesystem.\nThe current init/initramfs.c code.  usr/initramfs_data.o compiles to a size\nof ~15 kbytes.  Disabling BLK_DEV_RAM and BLK_DEV_INTRD shrinks the kernel\ncode size with ~60 Kbytes.\n\nThis patch avoids compiling in the code and data for initramfs support if\nCONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is not defined.  Instead of the initramfs code and\ndata it uses a small routine in init/noinitramfs.c to setup an initial\nstatic default environment for mounting a rootfilesystem later on in the\nkernel initialisation process.       "message": "[PATCH] io-accounting: core statistics\n\nThe present per-task IO accounting isn\u0027t very useful.  It simply counts the\nnumber of bytes passed into read() and write().  So if a process reads 1MB\nfrom an already-cached file, it is accused of having performed 1MB of I/O,\nwhich is wrong.\n\n(David Wright had some comments on the applicability of the present logical IO accounting:\n\n  For billing purposes it is useless but for workload analysis it is very\n  useful\n\n  read_bytes/read_calls  average read request size\n  write_bytes/write_calls average write request size\n\n  read_bytes/read_blocks ie logical/physical can indicate hit rate or thrashing\n  write_bytes/write_blocks  ie logical/physical  guess since pdflush writes can\n                                                be missed\n\n  I often look for logical larger than physical to see filesystem cache\n  problems.  And the bytes/cpusec can help find applications that are\n  dominating the cache and causing slow interactive response from page cache\n  contention.\n\n  I want to find the IO intensive applications and make sure they are doing\n  efficient IO.  Thus the acctcms(sysV) or csacms command would give the high\n  IO commands).\n\nThis patchset adds new accounting which tries to be more accurate.  We account\nfor three things:\n\nreads:\n\n  attempt to count the number of bytes which this process really did cause\n  to be fetched from the storage layer.  Done at the submit_bio() level, so it\n  is accurate for block-backed filesystems.  I also attempt to wire up NFS and\n  CIFS.\n\nwrites:\n\n  attempt to count the number of bytes which this process caused to be sent\n  to the storage layer.  This is done at page-dirtying time.\n\n  The big inaccuracy here is truncate.  If a process writes 1MB to a file\n  and then deletes the file, it will in fact perform no writeout.  But it will\n  have been accounted as having caused 1MB of write.\n\n  So...\n\ncancelled_writes:\n\n  account the number of bytes which this process caused to not happen, by\n  truncating pagecache.\n\n  We _could_ just subtract this from the process\u0027s `write\u0027 accounting.  But\n  that means that some processes would be reported to have done negative\n  amounts of write IO, which is silly.\n\n  So we just report the raw number and punt this decision up to userspace.\n\nNow, we _could_ account for writes at the physical I/O level.  But\n\n- This would require that we track memory-dirtying tasks at the per-page\n  level (would require a new pointer in struct page).\n\n- It would mean that IO statistics for a process are usually only available\n  long after that process has exitted.       "message": "[PATCH] sysctl: Undeprecate sys_sysctl\n\nThe basic issue is that despite have been deprecated and warned about as a\nvery bad thing in the man pages since its inception there are a few real\nusers of sys_sysctl.  It was my assumption that because sysctl had been\ndeprecated for all of 2.6 there would be no user space users by this point,\nso I initially gave sys_sysctl a very short deprecation period.\n\nNow that I know there are a few real users the only sane way to proceed\nwith deprecation is to push the time limit out to a year or two work and\nwork with distributions that have big testing pools like fedora core to\nfind these last remaining users.\n\nWhich means that the sys_sysctl interface needs to be maintained in the\nmeantime.\n\nSince I have provided a technical measure that allows us to add new sysctl\nentries without reserving more binary numbers I believe that is enough to\nfix the sys_sysctl binary interface maintenance problems, because there is\nno longer a need to change the binary interface at all.\n\nSince the sys_sysctl implementation needs to stay around for a while and\nthe worst of the maintenance issues that caused us to occasionally break\nthe ABI have been addressed I don\u0027t see any advantage in continuing with\nthe removal of sys_sysctl.\n\nSo instead of merely increasing the deprecation period this patch removes\nthe deprecation of sys_sysctl and modifies the kernel to compile the code\nin by default.\n\nWith committing to maintain sys_sysctl we get all of the advantages of a\nfast interface for anything that needs it.
