      "message": "perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -\u003e Performance Events\n\nBye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!\n\nIn the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its\ninitial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is\nbecoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,\nmonitoring, analysis facility.\n\nNaming its core object \u0027perf_counter\u0027 and naming the subsystem\n\u0027perfcounters\u0027 has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending\ncode like hw-breakpoints support the \u0027counter\u0027 name is less and\nless appropriate.\n\nAll in one, we\u0027ve decided to rename the subsystem to \u0027performance\nevents\u0027 and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables\nand API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)\n\nThe word \u0027event\u0027 is also a bit shorter than \u0027counter\u0027 - which makes\nit slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.\n\nThanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and\nsuggested a rename.\n\nUser-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch\nshould be function-invariant. We tried to time this\nchange to the point in time where the amount of pending patches\nis the smallest: the end of the merge window.\n\nNamespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some\nstylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.\n\n( NOTE: \u0027counters\u0027 are still the proper terminology when we deal\n  with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit\n  over-eager in renaming them.       "message": "Make non-compat preadv/pwritev use native register size\n\nInstead of always splitting the file offset into 32-bit \u0027high\u0027 and \u0027low\u0027\nparts, just split them into the largest natural word-size - which in C\nterms is \u0027unsigned long\u0027.\n\nThis allows 64-bit architectures to avoid the unnecessary 32-bit\nshifting and masking for native format (while the compat interfaces will\nobviously always have to do it).\n\nThis also changes the order of \u0027high\u0027 and \u0027low\u0027 to be \"low first\".  Why?\nBecause when we have it like this, the 64-bit system calls now don\u0027t use\nthe \"pos_high\" argument at all, and it makes more sense for the native\nsystem call to simply match the user-mode prototype.\n\nThis results in a much more natural calling convention, and allows the\ncompiler to generate much more straightforward code. These syscalls are a\npretty straightforward combination of pread and readv (same for write).\nThey are quite useful for doing vectored I/O in threaded applications.\nUsing lseek+readv instead opens race windows you\u0027ll have to plug with\nlocking.\n\nOther systems have such system calls too, for example NetBSD, check\nhere: http://www.daemon-systems.org/man/preadv.2.html\n\nThe application-visible interface provided by glibc should look like\nthis to be compatible to the existing implementations in the *BSD family:\n\n  ssize_t preadv(int d, const struct iovec *iov, int iovcnt, off_t offset);\n  ssize_t pwritev(int d, const struct iovec *iov, int iovcnt, off_t offset);\n\nThis prototype has one problem though: On 32bit archs is the (64bit)\noffset argument unaligned, which the syscall ABI of several archs doesn\u0027t\nallow to do. The addition of this system call\nmatches analogous changes in 2.6.27 (dup3(), evenfd2(), signalfd4(),\ninotify_init1(), epoll_create1(), pipe2()) which added new system calls\nthat differed from analogous traditional system calls in adding a flags\nargument that can be used to access additional functionality.\n\nThe accept4() system call is exactly the same as accept(), except that\nit adds a flags bit-mask argument.  Two flags are initially implemented.\n(Most of the new system calls in 2.6.27 also had both of these flags.)\n\nSOCK_CLOEXEC causes the close-on-exec (FD_CLOEXEC) flag to be enabled\nfor the new file descriptor returned by accept4().  This is a useful\nsecurity feature to avoid leaking information in a multithreaded\nprogram where one thread is doing an accept() at the same time as\nanother thread is doing a fork() plus exec().       "message": "flag parameters: paccept\n\nThis patch is by far the most complex in the series.  It adds a new syscall\npaccept.  This syscall differs from accept in that it adds (at the userlevel)\ntwo additional parameters:\n\n- a signal mask\n- a flags value\n\nThe flags parameter can be used to set flag like SOCK_CLOEXEC.  This is\nimlpemented here as well.  Some people argued that this is a property which\nshould be inherited from the file desriptor for the server but this is against\nPOSIX.  Additionally, we really want the signal mask parameter as well\n(similar to pselect, ppoll, etc).  So an interface change in inevitable.\n\nThe flag value is the same as for socket and socketpair.  I think diverging\nhere will only create confusion.  Similar to the filesystem interfaces where\nthe use of the O_* constants differs, it is acceptable here.\n\nThe signal mask is handled as for pselect etc.  The mask is temporarily\ninstalled for the thread and removed before the call returns. Many architectures need 64-bit arguments to be\naligned in suitable pairs of registers, and the original\nsys_sync_file_range(int, loff_t, loff_t, int) was therefore wasting an\nargument register for padding after the first integer.       "message": "signal/timer/event: eventfd core\n\nThis is a very simple and light file descriptor, that can be used as event\nwait/dispatch by userspace (both wait and dispatch) and by the kernel\n(dispatch only).  It can be used instead of pipe(2) in all cases where those\nwould simply be used to signal events.  Their kernel overhead is much lower\nthan pipes, and they do not consume two fds.  When used in the kernel, it can\noffer an fd-bridge to enable, for example, functionalities like KAIO or\nsyslets/threadlets to signal to an fd the completion of certain operations.\nBut more in general, an eventfd can be used by the kernel to signal readiness,\nin a POSIX poll/select way, of interfaces that would otherwise be incompatible\nwith it.  The API is:\n\nint eventfd(unsigned int count);\n\nThe eventfd API accepts an initial \"count\" parameter, and returns an eventfd\nfd.  It supports poll(2) (POLLIN, POLLOUT, POLLERR), read(2) and write(2).\n\nThe POLLIN flag is raised when the internal counter is greater than zero.\n\nThe POLLOUT flag is raised when at least a value of \"1\" can be written to the\ninternal counter.\n\nThe POLLERR flag is raised when an overflow in the counter value is detected.\n\nThe write(2) operation can never overflow the counter, since it blocks (unless\nO_NONBLOCK is set, in which case -EAGAIN is returned).\n\nBut the eventfd_signal() function can do it, since it\u0027s supposed to not sleep\nduring its operation.\n\nThe read(2) function reads the __u64 counter value, and reset the internal\nvalue to zero.  If the value read is equal to (__u64) -1, an overflow happened\non the internal counter (due to 2^64 eventfd_signal() posts that has never\nbeen retired - unlickely, but possible).\n\nThe write(2) call writes an __u64 count value, and adds it to the current\ncounter.  The eventfd fd supports O_NONBLOCK also.\n\nOn the kernel side, we have:\n\nstruct file *eventfd_fget(int fd);\nint eventfd_signal(struct file *file, unsigned int n);\n\nThe eventfd_fget() should be called to get a struct file* from an eventfd fd\n(this is an fget() + check of f_op being an eventfd fops pointer).\n\nThe kernel can then call eventfd_signal() every time it wants to post an event\nto userspace. The time\nspecified in the \"utmr-\u003eit_value\" parameter is the expiry time for the timer.\n\nIf the TFD_TIMER_ABSTIME flag is set in \"flags\", this is an absolute time,\notherwise it\u0027s a relative time.\n\nIf the time specified in the \"utmr-\u003eit_interval\" is not zero (.tv_sec \u003d\u003d 0,\ntv_nsec \u003d\u003d 0), this is the period at which the following ticks should be\ngenerated.\n\nThe \"utmr-\u003eit_interval\" should be set to zero if only one tick is requested.\nSetting the \"utmr-\u003eit_value\" to zero will disable the timer, or will create a\ntimerfd without the timer enabled.\n\nThe function returns the new (or same, in case \"ufd\" is a valid timerfd\ndescriptor) file, or -1 in case of error.\n\nAs stated before, the timerfd file descriptor supports poll(2), select(2) and\nepoll(2).  When a timer event happened on the timerfd, a POLLIN mask will be\nreturned.\n\nThe read(2) call can be used, and it will return a u32 variable holding the\nnumber of \"ticks\" that happened on the interface since the last call to\nread(2).       "message": "signal/timer/event: signalfd core\n\nThis patch series implements the new signalfd() system call.\n\nI took part of the original Linus code (and you know how badly it can be\nbroken :), and I added even more breakage ;) Signals are fetched from the same\nsignal queue used by the process, so signalfd will compete with standard\nkernel delivery in dequeue_signal().  If you want to reliably fetch signals on\nthe signalfd file, you need to block them with sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK).  This\nseems to be working fine on my Dual Opteron machine.  I made a quick test\nprogram for it:\n\nhttp://www.xmailserver.org/signafd-test.c\n\nThe signalfd() system call implements signal delivery into a file descriptor\nreceiver.  The signalfd file descriptor if created with the following API:\n\nint signalfd(int ufd, const sigset_t *mask, size_t masksize);\n\nThe \"ufd\" parameter allows to change an existing signalfd sigmask, w/out going\nto close/create cycle (Linus idea).  Use \"ufd\" \u003d\u003d -1 if you want a brand new\nsignalfd file.\n\nThe \"mask\" allows to specify the signal mask of signals that we are interested\nin.  The \"masksize\" parameter is the size of \"mask\".\n\nThe signalfd fd supports the poll(2) and read(2) system calls.  The poll(2)\nwill return POLLIN when signals are available to be dequeued.  As a direct\nconsequence of supporting the Linux poll subsystem, the signalfd fd can use\nused together with epoll(2) too.\n\nThe read(2) system call will return a \"struct signalfd_siginfo\" structure in\nthe userspace supplied buffer.  The return value is the number of bytes copied\nin the supplied buffer, or -1 in case of error.  The read(2) call can also\nreturn 0, in case the sighand structure to which the signalfd was attached,\nhas been orphaned.  The O_NONBLOCK flag is also supported, and read(2) will\nreturn -EAGAIN in case no signal is available.\n\nIf the size of the buffer passed to read(2) is lower than sizeof(struct\nsignalfd_siginfo), -EINVAL is returned.  A read from the signalfd can also\nreturn -ERESTARTSYS in case a signal hits the process.       "message": "[PATCH] x86: Add portable getcpu call\n\nFor NUMA optimization and some other algorithms it is useful to have a fast\nto get the current CPU and node numbers in user space.\n\nx86-64 added a fast way to do this in a vsyscall. This adds a generic\nsyscall for other architectures to make it a generic portable facility.\n\nI expect some of them will also implement it as a faster vsyscall.\n\nThe cache is an optimization for the x86-64 vsyscall optimization. Since\nwhat the syscall returns is an approximation anyways and user space\noften wants very fast results it can be cached for some time.  The norma\nmethods to get this information in user space are relatively slow\n\nThe vsyscall is in a better position to manage the cache because it has direct\naccess to a fast time stamp (jiffies). For the generic syscall optimization\nit doesn\u0027t help much, but enforce a valid argument to keep programs\nportable\n\nI only added an i386 syscall entry for now.       "message": "[PATCH] pi-futex: futex code cleanups\n\nWe are pleased to announce \"lightweight userspace priority inheritance\" (PI)\nsupport for futexes.  The following patchset and glibc patch implements it,\nontop of the robust-futexes patchset which is included in 2.6.16-mm1.\n\nWe are calling it lightweight for 3 reasons:\n\n - in the user-space fastpath a PI-enabled futex involves no kernel work\n   (or any other PI complexity) at all.  No registration, no extra kernel\n   calls - just pure fast atomic ops in userspace.\n\n - in the slowpath (in the lock-contention case), the system call and\n   scheduling pattern is in fact better than that of normal futexes, due to\n   the \u0027integrated\u0027 nature of FUTEX_LOCK_PI.  [more about that further down]\n\n - the in-kernel PI implementation is streamlined around the mutex\n   abstraction, with strict rules that keep the implementation relatively\n   simple: only a single owner may own a lock (i.e.  no read-write lock\n   support), only the owner may unlock a lock, no recursive locking, etc.\n\n  Priority Inheritance - why, oh why???\n  -------------------------------------\n\nMany of you heard the horror stories about the evil PI code circling Linux for\nyears, which makes no real sense at all and is only used by buggy applications\nand which has horrible overhead.  Some of you have dreaded this very moment,\nwhen someone actually submits working PI code ;-)\n\nSo why would we like to see PI support for futexes?\n\nWe\u0027d like to see it done purely for technological reasons.  We dont think it\u0027s\na buggy concept, we think it\u0027s useful functionality to offer to applications,\nwhich functionality cannot be achieved in other ways.  We also think it\u0027s the\nright thing to do, and we think we\u0027ve got the right arguments and the right\nnumbers to prove that.  We also believe that we can address all the\ncounter-arguments as well.  For these reasons (and the reasons outlined below)\nwe are submitting this patch-set for upstream kernel inclusion.\n\nWhat are the benefits of PI?\n\n  The short reply:\n  ----------------\n\nUser-space PI helps achieving/improving determinism for user-space\napplications.  In the best-case, it can help achieve determinism and\nwell-bound latencies.  Even in the worst-case, PI will improve the statistical\ndistribution of locking related application delays.\n\n  The longer reply:\n  -----------------\n\nFirstly, sharing locks between multiple tasks is a common programming\ntechnique that often cannot be replaced with lockless algorithms.  As we can\nsee it in the kernel [which is a quite complex program in itself], lockless\nstructures are rather the exception than the norm - the current ratio of\nlockless vs.  locky code for shared data structures is somewhere between 1:10\nand 1:100.  Lockless is hard, and the complexity of lockless algorithms often\nendangers to ability to do robust reviews of said code.  I.e.  critical RT\napps often choose lock structures to protect critical data structures, instead\nof lockless algorithms.  Furthermore, there are cases (like shared hardware,\nor other resource limits) where lockless access is mathematically impossible.\n\nMedia players (such as Jack) are an example of reasonable application design\nwith multiple tasks (with multiple priority levels) sharing short-held locks:\nfor example, a highprio audio playback thread is combined with medium-prio\nconstruct-audio-data threads and low-prio display-colory-stuff threads.  Add\nvideo and decoding to the mix and we\u0027ve got even more priority levels.\n\nSo once we accept that synchronization objects (locks) are an unavoidable fact\nof life, and once we accept that multi-task userspace apps have a very fair\nexpectation of being able to use locks, we\u0027ve got to think about how to offer\nthe option of a deterministic locking implementation to user-space.\n\nMost of the technical counter-arguments against doing priority inheritance\nonly apply to kernel-space locks.  But user-space locks are different, there\nwe cannot disable interrupts or make the task non-preemptible in a critical\nsection, so the \u0027use spinlocks\u0027 argument does not apply (user-space spinlocks\nhave the same priority inversion problems as other user-space locking\nconstructs).  Fact is, pretty much the only technique that currently enables\ngood determinism for userspace locks (such as futex-based pthread mutexes) is\npriority inheritance:\n\nCurrently (without PI), if a high-prio and a low-prio task shares a lock [this\nis a quite common scenario for most non-trivial RT applications], even if all\ncritical sections are coded carefully to be deterministic (i.e.  all critical\nsections are short in duration and only execute a limited number of\ninstructions), the kernel cannot guarantee any deterministic execution of the\nhigh-prio task: any medium-priority task could preempt the low-prio task while\nit holds the shared lock and executes the critical section, and could delay it\nindefinitely.\n\n  Implementation:\n  ---------------\n\nAs mentioned before, the userspace fastpath of PI-enabled pthread mutexes\ninvolves no kernel work at all - they behave quite similarly to normal\nfutex-based locks: a 0 value means unlocked, and a value\u003d\u003dTID means locked.\n(This is the same method as used by list-based robust futexes.) Userspace uses\natomic ops to lock/unlock these mutexes without entering the kernel.\n\nTo handle the slowpath, we have added two new futex ops:\n\n  FUTEX_LOCK_PI\n  FUTEX_UNLOCK_PI\n\nIf the lock-acquire fastpath fails, [i.e.  an atomic transition from 0 to TID\nfails], then FUTEX_LOCK_PI is called.  The kernel does all the remaining work:\nif there is no futex-queue attached to the futex address yet then the code\nlooks up the task that owns the futex [it has put its own TID into the futex\nvalue], and attaches a \u0027PI state\u0027 structure to the futex-queue.  The pi_state\nincludes an rt-mutex, which is a PI-aware, kernel-based synchronization\nobject.  The \u0027other\u0027 task is made the owner of the rt-mutex, and the\nFUTEX_WAITERS bit is atomically set in the futex value.  Then this task tries\nto lock the rt-mutex, on which it blocks.  Once it returns, it has the mutex\nacquired, and it sets the futex value to its own TID and returns.  Userspace\nhas no other work to perform - it now owns the lock, and futex value contains\nFUTEX_WAITERS|TID.\n\nIf the unlock side fastpath succeeds, [i.e.  userspace manages to do a TID -\u003e\n0 atomic transition of the futex value], then no kernel work is triggered.\n\nIf the unlock fastpath fails (because the FUTEX_WAITERS bit is set), then\nFUTEX_UNLOCK_PI is called, and the kernel unlocks the futex on the behalf of\nuserspace - and it also unlocks the attached pi_state-\u003ert_mutex and thus wakes\nup any potential waiters.\n\nNote that under this approach, contrary to other PI-futex approaches, there is\nno prior \u0027registration\u0027 of a PI-futex.  [which is not quite possible anyway,\ndue to existing ABI properties of pthread mutexes.]\n\nAlso, under this scheme, \u0027robustness\u0027 and \u0027PI\u0027 are two orthogonal properties\nof futexes, and all four combinations are possible: futex, robust-futex,\nPI-futex, robust+PI-futex.\n\n  glibc support:\n  --------------\n\nUlrich Drepper and Jakub Jelinek have written glibc support for PI-futexes\n(and robust futexes), enabling robust and PI (PTHREAD_PRIO_INHERIT) POSIX\nmutexes.  (PTHREAD_PRIO_PROTECT support will be added later on too, no\nadditional kernel changes are needed for that).       "message": "[PATCH] page migration: sys_move_pages(): support moving of individual pages\n\nmove_pages() is used to move individual pages of a process. The function can\nbe used to determine the location of pages and to move them onto the desired\nnode. move_pages() returns status information for each page.\n\nlong move_pages(pid, number_of_pages_to_move,\n\t\taddresses_of_pages[],\n\t\tnodes[] or NULL,\n\t\tstatus[],\n\t\tflags);\n\nThe addresses of pages is an array of void * pointing to the\npages to be moved.\n\nThe nodes array contains the node numbers that the pages should be moved\nto. If a NULL is passed instead of an array then no pages are moved but\nthe status array is updated. The status request may be used to determine\nthe page state before issuing another move_pages() to move pages.\n\nThe status array will contain the state of all individual page migration\nattempts when the function terminates.       "message": "[PATCH] sys_sync_file_range()\n\nRemove the recently-added LINUX_FADV_ASYNC_WRITE and LINUX_FADV_WRITE_WAIT\nfadvise() additions, do it in a new sys_sync_file_range() syscall instead.\nReasons:\n\n- It\u0027s more flexible.  Things which would require two or three syscalls with\n  fadvise() can be done in a single syscall.\n\n- Using fadvise() in this manner is something not covered by POSIX.\n\nThe patch wires up the syscall for x86.\n\nThe sycall is implemented in the new fs/sync.c.  The intention is that we can\nmove sys_fsync(), sys_fdatasync() and perhaps sys_sync() into there later.\n\nDocumentation for the syscall is in fs/sync.c.\n\nA test app (sync_file_range.c) is in\nhttp://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/stuff/ext3-tools.tar.gz.\n\nThe available-to-GPL-modules do_sync_file_range() is for knfsd: \"A COMMIT can\nsay NFS_DATA_SYNC or NFS_FILE_SYNC.  I can skip the -\u003efsync call for\nNFS_DATA_SYNC which is hopefully the more common.\"\n\nNote: the `async\u0027 writeout mode SYNC_FILE_RANGE_WRITE will turn synchronous if\nthe queue is congested.  This is trivial to fix: add a new flag bit, set\nwbc-\u003enonblocking.  But I\u0027m not sure that we want to expose implementation\ndetails down to that level.\n\nNote: it\u0027s notable that we can sync an fd which wasn\u0027t opened for writing.\nSame with fsync() and fdatasync()).\n\nNote: the code takes some care to handle attempts to sync file contents\noutside the 16TB offset on 32-bit machines.  It makes such attempts appear to\nsucceed, for best 32-bit/64-bit compatibility.
