      "message": "[PATCH] Proper fix for highmem kmap_atomic functions for VMI for 2.6.21\n\nSince lazy MMU batching mode still allows interrupts to enter, it is\npossible for interrupt handlers to try to use kmap_atomic, which fails when\nlazy mode is active, since the PTE update to highmem will be delayed.       "message": "[PATCH] i386: clear segment register padding in core dumps\n\nThe segment register slots in struct pt_regs are padded to 32 bits.\nSome of these are stored with instructions like \"pushl %es\", which\nleaves the high 16 bits as they were.  So the high bits of these\nfields in struct pt_regs contain kernel stack garbage.  These bits are\nignored by everything and never leak to user space, except in core\ndumps.  The user struct pt_regs is always at the base of the thread\u0027s\nkernel stack and so it seems unlikely the information that leaks from\nhere is ever worthwhile so as to be a security concern, but I\u0027m not\nsure about that.  It has been this way for ages; userland consumers of\ncore dumps all mask off these high bits themselves.  So it is not urgent.\n\nThis change masks off the padding bits of the segment register slots\nin core dumps.  ptrace already masks off these high bits, so this\nmakes the values in core dumps consistent with what ptrace would\nreport just before the process died.\n\nAs I read the processor manuals, the cs and ss values will always be\npadded with zero bits rather than stack garbage.  But unlike \"pushl %es\",\nthis is not simple to test with a userland program.  So I added the two\ninstructions rather than wonder if they are really never necessary.\n\nI think that x86_64 does not have this problem (for either 32-bit or\n64-bit processes).       "message": "[PATCH] i386: make x86_64 tsc header require i386 rather than vice-versa\n\nPrior to commit 95492e4646e5de8b43d9a7908d6177fb737b61f0 ([PATCH] x86:\nrewrite SMP TSC sync code), the headers in asm-i386 did not really require\nanything in include/asm-x86_64.  This means that distributions such as\nfedora did not include asm-x86_64 in kernel-devel headers for i386.  Ingo\u0027s\ncommit changed that, and broke things.  This is easy enough to hack around\nin package builds by just including asm-x86_64 on i386, but that\u0027s kind of\nannoying. It\u0027s a debug tool, not a \u0027make life\nharder\u0027 tool!!\n\nwith this patch the KVM guest boots up just fine.\n\nAnd with this my laptop (Lenovo T60) also stopped its sporadic hard\nhanging (sometimes in acpi_init(), sometimes later during bootup,\nsometimes much later during actual use) as well.       "message": "[PATCH] vmi: pit override\n\nThe time_init_hook in paravirt-ops no longer functions in the correct manner\nafter the integration of the hrtimers code.  The problem is that now the call\npath for time initialization is:\n\n  time_init :\n       late_time_init \u003d hpet_time_init;\n\n  late_time_init -\u003e hpet_time_init:\n       setup_pit_timer (BAD)\n       do_time_init --\u003e (via paravirt.h)\n          time_init_hook --\u003e (via arch_hooks.h)\n              time_init_hook (in SUBARCH/setup.c)\n\nIf this isn\u0027t confusing enough, the paravirt case goes through an indirect\nfunction pointer in the paravirt-ops table.  The problem is, by the time the\nparavirt hook is called, the pit timer is already enabled.\n\nBut paravirt guests have their own timer, and don\u0027t want to use the PIT.\nRather than intensify the struggle for power going on here, just make it all\nnice and simple and just unconditionally do all timer setup in the\nlate_time_init hook.  This also has the advantage of enabling timers in the\nsame place in all code paths, so everyone has the same bugs and we don\u0027t have\noutliers who break other code because they turn on timer too early or too\nlate.\n\nSo the paravirt-ops time init function is now by default hpet_time_init, which\nis the time init function used for native hardware.       "message": "[PATCH] vmi: paravirt drop udelay op\n\nNot respecting udelay causes problems with any virtual hardware that is passed\nthrough to real hardware.  This can be noticed by any device that interacts\nwith the real world in real time - like AP startup, which takes real time.  Or\nkeyboard LEDs, which should blink in real-time.  Or floppy drives, but only\nwhen passed through to a real floppy controller on OSes which can\u0027t\nsufficiently buffer the floppy commands to emulate a zero latency floppy.  Or\nIDE drives, when connecting to a physical CDROM.\n\nThis was mostly a hack to get the kernel to boot faster, but it introduced a\nnumber of misvirtualization bugs, and Alan and Pavel argued pretty strongly\nagainst it. This information is required so the physical address of PTE\nupdates can be determined; otherwise, the mm layer would have to carry the\nphysical address all the way to each PTE modification callsite, which is even\nmore hideous that the macros required to provide the proper hooks.\n\nSo lets not mess up arch neutral code to achieve this, but keep the horror in\nan #ifdef HIGHPTE in include/asm-i386/pgtable.h.       "message": "[PATCH] vmi: sched clock paravirt op fix\n\nThe custom_sched_clock hook is broken.  The result from sched_clock needs to\nbe in nanoseconds, not in CPU cycles.  The TSC is insufficient for this\npurpose, because TSC is poorly defined in a virtual environment, and mostly\nrepresents real world time instead of scheduled process time (which can be\ninterrupted without notice when a virtual machine is descheduled).\n\nTo make the scheduler consistent, we must expose a different nature of time,\nthat is scheduled time.  So deprecate this custom_sched_clock hack and turn it\ninto a paravirt-op, as it should have been all along.       "message": "[PATCH] sched: remove SMT nice\n\nRemove the SMT-nice feature which idles sibling cpus on SMT cpus to\nfacilitiate nice working properly where cpu power is shared.  The idling of\ncpus in the presence of runnable tasks is considered too fragile, easy to\nbreak with outside code, and the complexity of managing this system if an\narchitecture comes along with many logical cores sharing cpu power will be\nunworkable.\n\nRemove the associated per_cpu_gain variable in sched_domains used only by\nthis code.\n\nAlso:\n\n  The reason is that with dynticks enabled, this code breaks without yet\n  further tweaks so dynticks brought on the rapid demise of this code.  So\n  either we tweak this code or kill it off entirely.  It was Ingo\u0027s preference\n  to kill it off.       "message": "rdmsr_on_cpu, wrmsr_on_cpu\n\nThere was OpenVZ specific bug rendering some cpufreq drivers unusable on SMP.\nIn short, when cpufreq code thinks it confined itself to needed cpu by means\nof set_cpus_allowed() to execute rdmsr, some \"virtual cpu\" feature can migrate\nprocess to anywhere.       "message": "[PATCH] i386 rework local apic timer calibration\n\nThe local apic timer calibration has two problem cases:\n\n1.  The calibration is based on readout of the PIT/HPET timer to detect the\n   wrap of the periodic tick.  It happens that a box gets stuck in the\n   calibration loop due to a PIT with a broken readout function.\n\n2.  CoreDuo boxen show a sporadic PIT runs too slow defect, which results\n   in a wrong lapic calibration.  The PIT goes back to normal operation once\n   the lapic timer is switched to periodic mode.\n\nBoth are existing and unfixed problems in the current upstream kernel and\nprevent certain laptops and other systems from booting Linux.\n\nRework the code to address both problems:\n\n- Make the calibration interrupt driven.  This removes the wait_timer_tick\n  magic hackery from lapic.c and time_hpet.c.  The clockevents framework\n  allows easy substitution of the global tick event handler for the\n  calibration.  This is more accurate than monitoring jiffies.  At this point\n  of the boot process, nothing disturbes the interrupt delivery, so the\n  results are very accurate.\n\n- Verify the calibration against the PM timer, when available by using the\n  early access function.  When the measured calibration period is outside of\n  an one percent window, then the lapic timer calibration is adjusted to the\n  pm timer result.\n\n- Verify the calibration by running the lapic timer with the calibration\n  handler.  Disable lapic timer in case of deviation.\n\nThis also removes the \"synchronization\" of the local apic timer to the global\ntick.  This synchronization never worked, as there is no way to synchronize\nPIT(HPET) and local APIC timer.  The synchronization by waiting for the tick\njust alignes the local APIC timer for the first events, but later the events\ndrift away due to the different clocks. This turns\nout to be a significant win during context switch, but must be done at a\nspecific point before side effects to CPU state are visible to subsequent\ninstructions.  This is similar to the MMU batching hooks already provided.\nThe same hooks could be used by the Xen backend to implement a context switch\nmulticall.\n\nTo explain a bit more about lazy modes in the paravirt patches, basically, the\nidea is that only one of lazy CPU or MMU mode can be active at any given time.\n Lazy MMU mode is similar to this lazy CPU mode, and allows for batching of\nmultiple PTE updates (say, inside a remap loop), but to avoid keeping some\nkind of state machine about when to flush cpu or mmu updates, we just allow\none or the other to be active. The allocation of page table roots is especially tricky. There is no obvious reason why these numbers should be\narchitecture specific, nor any apparent relationship with the termios\nstructure.  The total number of these, NR_LDISCS, is defined in linux/tty.h\nanyway.       "message": "[PATCH] i386 vDSO: use VM_ALWAYSDUMP\n\nThis patch fixes core dumps to include the vDSO vma, which is left out now.\nIt removes the special-case core writing macros, which were not doing the\nright thing for the vDSO vma anyway.  Instead, it uses VM_ALWAYSDUMP in the\nvma; there is no need for the fixmap page to be installed.  It handles the\nCONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO case by making elf_core_dump use the fake vma from\nget_gate_vma after real vmas in the same way the /proc/PID/maps code does.\n\nThis changes core dumps so they no longer include the non-PT_LOAD phdrs from\nthe vDSO.  I made the change to add them in the first place, but in turned out\nthat nothing ever wanted them there since the advent of NT_AUXV.       "message": "[PATCH] x86: fix PDA variables to work during boot\n\nThe current PDA code, which went in in post 2.6.19 has a flaw in that it\ndoesn\u0027t correctly cycle the GDT and %GS segment through the boot PDA,\nthe CPU PDA and finally the per-cpu PDA.\n\nThe bug generally doesn\u0027t show up if the boot CPU id is zero, but\neverything falls apart for a non zero boot CPU id.       "message": "[PATCH] PM: Fix SMP races in the freezer\n\nCurrently, to tell a task that it should go to the refrigerator, we set the\nPF_FREEZE flag for it and send a fake signal to it.  Unfortunately there\nare two SMP-related problems with this approach.  First, a task running on\nanother CPU may be updating its flags while the freezer attempts to set\nPF_FREEZE for it and this may leave the task\u0027s flags in an inconsistent\nstate.  Second, there is a potential race between freeze_process() and\nrefrigerator() in which freeze_process() running on one CPU is reading a\ntask\u0027s PF_FREEZE flag while refrigerator() running on another CPU has just\nset PF_FROZEN for the same task and attempts to reset PF_FREEZE for it.  If\nthe refrigerator wins the race, freeze_process() will state that PF_FREEZE\nhasn\u0027t been set for the task and will set it unnecessarily, so the task\nwill go to the refrigerator once again after it\u0027s been thawed.\n\nTo solve first of these problems we need to stop using PF_FREEZE to tell\ntasks that they should go to the refrigerator.  Instead, we can introduce a\nspecial TIF_*** flag and use it for this purpose, since it is allowed to\nchange the other tasks\u0027 TIF_*** flags and there are special calls for it.\n\nTo avoid the freeze_process()-refrigerator() race we can make\nfreeze_process() to always check the task\u0027s PF_FROZEN flag after it\u0027s read\nits \"freeze\" flag.  We should also make sure that refrigerator() will\nalways reset the task\u0027s \"freeze\" flag after it\u0027s set PF_FROZEN for it.\n\nSigned-off-by: Rafael J.       "message": "[PATCH] tty: preparatory structures for termios revamp\n\nIn order to sort out our struct termios and add proper speed control we need\nto separate the kernel and user termios structures.  Glibc is fine but the\nother libraries rely on the kernel exported struct termios and we need to\nextend this without breaking the ABI/API\n\nTo do so we add a struct ktermios which is the kernel view of a termios\nstructure and overlaps the struct termios with extra fields on the end for\nnow.  (That limitation will go away in later patches).       "message": "[PATCH] paravirt: Patch inline replacements for paravirt intercepts\n\nIt turns out that the most called ops, by several orders of magnitude,\nare the interrupt manipulation ops.       "message": "[PATCH] paravirt: header and stubs for paravirtualisation\n\nCreate a paravirt.h header for all the critical operations which need to be\nreplaced with hypervisor calls, and include that instead of defining native\noperations, when CONFIG_PARAVIRT.\n\nThis patch does the dumbest possible replacement of paravirtualized\ninstructions: calls through a \"paravirt_ops\" structure.
