Quoting John:\n\n \"Petr Titěra reported an issue where he saw odd atime regressions with\n  2.6.33 where there were a full second worth of nanoseconds in the\n  nanoseconds field.\n\n  He also reviewed the time code and narrowed down the problem: unhandled\n  overflow of the nanosecond field caused by rounding up the\n  sub-nanosecond accumulated time.\n\n  Details:\n\n   * At the end of update_wall_time(), we currently round up the\n  sub-nanosecond portion of accumulated time when storing it into xtime.\n  This was added to avoid time inconsistencies caused when the\n  sub-nanosecond portion was truncated when storing into xtime.\n  Unfortunately we don\u0027t handle the possible second overflow caused by\n  that rounding.\n\n   * Previously the xtime_cache code hid this overflow by normalizing the\n  xtime value when storing into the xtime_cache.\n\n   * We could try to handle the second overflow after the rounding up, but\n  since this affects the timekeeping\u0027s internal state, this would further\n  complicate the next accumulation cycle, causing small errors in ntp\n  steering. As much as I\u0027d like to get rid of it, the xtime_cache code is\n  known to work.\n\n   * The correct fix is really to include the sub-nanosecond portion in the\n  timekeeping accessor function, so we don\u0027t need to round up at during\n  accumulation. This would greatly simplify the accumulation code.\n  Unfortunately, we can\u0027t do this safely until the last three\n  non-GENERIC_TIME arches (sparc32, arm, cris) are converted  (those\n  patches are in -mm) and we kill off the spots where arches set xtime\n  directly.       "message": "Allow times and time system calls to return small negative values\n\nAt the moment, the times() system call will appear to fail for a period\nshortly after boot, while the value it want to return is between -4095 and\n-1.  The same thing will also happen for the time() system call on 32-bit\nplatforms some time in 2106 or so.\n\nOn some platforms, such as x86, this is unavoidable because of the system\ncall ABI, but other platforms such as powerpc have a separate error\nindication from the return value, so system calls can in fact return small\nnegative values without indicating an error.  On those platforms,\nforce_successful_syscall_return() provides a way to indicate that the\nsystem call return value should not be treated as an error even if it is\nin the range which would normally be taken as a negative error number.\n\nThis adds a force_successful_syscall_return() call to the time() and\ntimes() system calls plus their 32-bit compat versions, so that they don\u0027t\nerroneously indicate an error on those platforms whose system call ABI has\na separate error indication.       "message": "avoid overflows in kernel/time.c\n\nWhen the conversion factor between jiffies and milli- or microseconds is\nnot a single multiply or divide, as for the case of HZ \u003d\u003d 300, we currently\ndo a multiply followed by a divide.  The intervening result, however, is\nsubject to overflows, especially since the fraction is not simplified (for\nHZ \u003d\u003d 300, we multiply by 300 and divide by 1000).\n\nThis is exposed to the user when passing a large timeout to poll(), for\nexample.\n\nThis patch replaces the multiply-divide with a reciprocal multiplication on\n32-bit platforms.  When the input is an unsigned long, there is no portable\nway to do this on 64-bit platforms there is no portable way to do this\nsince it requires a 128-bit intermediate result (which gcc does support on\n64-bit platforms but may generate libgcc calls, e.g.  on 64-bit s390), but\nsince the output is a 32-bit integer in the cases affected, just simplify\nthe multiply-divide (*3/10 instead of *300/1000).\n\nThe reciprocal multiply used can have off-by-one errors in the upper half\nof the valid output range.  This could be avoided at the expense of having\nto deal with a potential 65-bit intermediate result.  Since the intent is\nto avoid overflow problems and most of the other time conversions are only\nsemiexact, the off-by-one errors were considered an acceptable tradeoff.\n\nAt Ralf Baechle\u0027s suggestion, this version uses a Perl script to compute\nthe necessary constants.  We already have dependencies on Perl for kernel\ncompiles.  This does, however, require the Perl module Math::BigInt, which\nis included in the standard Perl distribution starting with version 5.8.0.\nIn order to support older versions of Perl, include a table of canned\nconstants in the script itself, and structure the script so that\nMath::BigInt isn\u0027t required if pulling values from said table.\n\nRunning the script requires that the HZ value is available from the\nMakefile.  Thus, this patch also adds the Kconfig variable CONFIG_HZ to the\narchitectures which didn\u0027t already have it (alpha, cris, frv, h8300, m32r,\nm68k, m68knommu, sparc, v850, and xtensa.)       "message": "system timer: fix crash in \u003c100Hz system timer\n\nThe kernel has a divide by zero crash when trying to run the system timer\nless than 100Hz.  The problem is x/(HZ/USER_HZ) and related.  Now\nx*(USER_HZ/HZ) will be used if HZ\u003cUSER_HZ.\n\nI\u0027m running the Linux kernel under qemu and went to run a slower system\ntimer to take less CPU (and battery) on the host.  I found that the kernel\npaniced under emulation because of a divide by zero in three places.  Here\nis the patch.  The base git was updated today 01-05-2008.  I went for a\n20Hz system time by adding config HZ_20 etc to kernel/Kconfig.hz.       "message": "[NET]: convert network timestamps to ktime_t\n\nWe currently use a special structure (struct skb_timeval) and plain\n\u0027struct timeval\u0027 to store packet timestamps in sk_buffs and struct\nsock.\n\nThis has some drawbacks :\n- Fixed resolution of micro second.\n- Waste of space on 64bit platforms where sizeof(struct timeval)\u003d16\n\nI suggest using ktime_t that is a nice abstraction of high resolution\ntime services, currently capable of nanosecond resolution.\n\nAs sizeof(ktime_t) is 8 bytes, using ktime_t in \u0027struct sock\u0027 permits\na 8 byte shrink of this structure on 64bit architectures. Some other\nstructures also benefit from this size reduction (struct ipq in\nipv4/ip_fragment.c, struct frag_queue in ipv6/reassembly.c, ...)\n\nOnce this ktime infrastructure adopted, we can more easily provide\nnanosecond resolution on top of it.       "message": "[PATCH] time interpolator: Fix settimeofday inaccuracy\n\nsettimeofday will set the time a little bit too early on systems using\ntime interpolation since it subtracts the current interpolator offset\nfrom the time.
