      "message": "finish i386 and x86-64 sysdata conversion\n\nThis patch finishes the i386 and x86-64 -\u003esysdata conversion and hopefully\nalso fixes Riku\u0027s and Andy\u0027s observed bugs.  It is based on Yinghai Lu\u0027s\nand Andy Whitcroft\u0027s patches (thanks!) with some changes:\n\n- introduce pci_scan_bus_with_sysdata() and use it instead of\n  pci_scan_bus() where appropriate. pci_scan_bus_with_sysdata() will\n  allocate the sysdata structure and then call pci_scan_bus().\n- always allocate pci_sysdata dynamically. The whole point of this\n  sysdata work is to make it easy to do root-bus specific things\n  (e.g., support PCI domains and IOMMU\u0027s). I dislike using a default\n  struct pci_sysdata in some places and a dynamically allocated\n  pci_sysdata elsewhere - the potential for someone indavertantly\n  changing the default structure is too high.\n- this patch only makes the minimal changes necessary, i.e., the NUMA node is\n  always initialized to -1. Patches to do the right thing with regards\n  to the NUMA node can build on top of this (either add a \u0027node\u0027\n  parameter to pci_scan_bus_with_sysdata() or just update the node\n  when it becomes known).\n\nThe patch was compile tested with various configurations (e.g., NUMAQ,\nVISWS) and run-time tested on i386 and x86-64. It broke Sébastien Dugué\u0027s\nmachine and Jeff said (persuasively)\n\n  This seems like it will break decades-long-working stuff, in favor of\n  breaking new ground in our favorite area, \"trusting the BIOS.\"\n\n  It\u0027s just not worth it for serial ports, IMO.  Serial ports are something\n  that just shouldn\u0027t break at this late stage in the game.  My new Intel\n  platform boxes don\u0027t even have serial ports, so I question the value of\n  messing with serial port probing even more...  because...  just wait a year,\n  and your box won\u0027t have a serial port either!  :)\n\n  I certainly don\u0027t object to the use of platform devices (or isa_driver),\n  but the probe change seems questionable.  That\u0027s sorta analagous to\n  rewriting the floppy driver probe routine.       "message": "x86: Fix alternatives and kprobes to remap write-protected kernel text\n\nReenable kprobes and alternative patching when the kernel text is write\nprotected by DEBUG_RODATA\n\nAdd a general utility function to change write protected text.  The new\nfunction remaps the code using vmap to write it and takes care of CPU\nsynchronization.       "message": "x86_64: support poll() on /dev/mcelog\n\nBackground:\n /dev/mcelog is typically polled manually.  This is less than optimal for\n situations where accurate accounting of MCEs is important.  Calling\n poll() on /dev/mcelog does not work.\n\nDescription:\n This patch adds support for poll() to /dev/mcelog.  This results in\n immediate wakeup of user apps whenever the poller finds MCEs.  Because\n the exception handler can not take any locks, it can not call the wakeup\n itself.  Instead, it uses a thread_info flag (TIF_MCE_NOTIFY) which is\n caught at the next return from interrupt or exit from idle, calling the\n mce_user_notify() routine.  This patch also disables the \"fake panic\"\n path of the mce_panic(), because it results in printk()s in the exception\n handler and crashy systems.\n\n This patch also does some small cleanup for essentially unused variables,\n and moves the user notification into the body of the poller, so it is\n only called once per poll, rather than once per CPU.\n\nResult:\n Applications can now poll() on /dev/mcelog.  When an error is logged\n (whether through the poller or through an exception) the applications are\n woken up promptly.  This should not affect any previous behaviors.  If no\n MCEs are being logged, there is no overhead.\n\nAlternatives:\n I considered simply supporting poll() through the poller and not using\n TIF_MCE_NOTIFY at all.  However, the time between an uncorrectable error\n happening and the user application being notified is *the*most* critical\n window for us.  Many uncorrectable errors can be logged to the network if\n given a chance.\n\n I also considered doing the MCE poll directly from the idle notifier, but\n decided that was overkill.\n\nTesting:\n I used an error-injecting DIMM to create lots of correctable DRAM errors\n and verified that my user app is woken up in sync with the polling interval.\n I also used the northbridge to inject uncorrectable ECC errors, and\n verified (printk() to the rescue) that the notify routine is called and the\n user app does wake up.       "message": "x86_64: fake pxm-to-node mapping for fake numa\n\nFor NUMA emulation, our SLIT should represent the true NUMA topology of the\nsystem but our proximity domain to node ID mapping needs to reflect the\nemulated state.\n\nWhen NUMA emulation has successfully setup fake nodes on the system, a new\nfunction, acpi_fake_nodes() is called.  This function determines the proximity\ndomain (_PXM) for each true node found on the system.  It then finds which\nemulated nodes have been allocated on this true node as determined by its\nstarting address.  The node ID to PXM mapping is changed so that each fake\nnode ID points to the PXM of the true node that it is located on.\n\nIf the machine failed to register a SLIT, then we assume there is no special\nrequirement for emulated node affinity so we use the default LOCAL_DISTANCE,\nwhich is newly exported to this code, as our measurement if the emulated nodes\nappear in the same PXM.       "message": "x86_64: Add vDSO for x86-64 with gettimeofday/clock_gettime/getcpu\n\nThis implements new vDSO for x86-64.  The concept is similar\nto the existing vDSOs on i386 and PPC.  x86-64 has had static\nvsyscalls before,  but these are not flexible enough anymore.\n\nA vDSO is a ELF shared library supplied by the kernel that is mapped into\nuser address space.  The vDSO mapping is randomized for each process\nfor security reasons.\n\nDoing this was needed for clock_gettime, because clock_gettime\nalways needs a syscall fallback and having one at a fixed\naddress would have made buffer overflow exploits too easy to write.\n\nThe vdso can be disabled with vdso\u003d0\n\nIt currently includes a new gettimeofday implemention and optimized\nclock_gettime().       "message": "define new percpu interface for shared data\n\nper cpu data section contains two types of data.  One set which is\nexclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu,\nbut also shared by remote cpus.  In the current kernel, these two sets are\nnot clearely separated out.  This can potentially cause the same data\ncacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in\nunnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus.\n\nOne way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per\ncpu data, both at the beginning and at the end.  Because of the padding at\nboth ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the\ninterface to achieve this is not clean.\n\nThis patch:\n\nMoves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked\nas ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data\nelements are cacheline aligned.       "message": "sys_fallocate() implementation on i386, x86_64 and powerpc\n\nfallocate() is a new system call being proposed here which will allow\napplications to preallocate space to any file(s) in a file system.\nEach file system implementation that wants to use this feature will need\nto support an inode operation called -\u003efallocate().\nApplications can use this feature to avoid fragmentation to certain\nlevel and thus get faster access speed. With preallocation, applications\nalso get a guarantee of space for particular file(s) - even if later the\nthe system becomes full.\n\nCurrently, glibc provides an interface called posix_fallocate() which\ncan be used for similar cause. Though this has the advantage of working\non all file systems, but it is quite slow (since it writes zeroes to\neach block that has to be preallocated). Without a doubt, file systems\ncan do this more efficiently within the kernel, by implementing\nthe proposed fallocate() system call. It is expected that\nposix_fallocate() will be modified to call this new system call first\nand incase the kernel/filesystem does not implement it, it should fall\nback to the current implementation of writing zeroes to the new blocks.\nToDos:\n1.       "message": "Add __GFP_MOVABLE for callers to flag allocations from high memory that may be migrated\n\nIt is often known at allocation time whether a page may be migrated or not.\nThis patch adds a flag called __GFP_MOVABLE and a new mask called\nGFP_HIGH_MOVABLE.  Allocations using the __GFP_MOVABLE can be either migrated\nusing the page migration mechanism or reclaimed by syncing with backing\nstorage and discarding.\n\nAn API function very similar to alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is added for\n__GFP_MOVABLE allocations called alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable().  The\nflags used by alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() are not changed because it would\nchange the semantics of an existing API.  After this patch is applied there\nare no in-kernel users of alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() so it probably should\nbe marked deprecated if this patch is merged.\n\nNote that this patch includes a minor cleanup to the use of __GFP_ZERO in\nshmem.c to keep all flag modifications to inode-\u003emapping in the\nshmem_dir_alloc() helper function.       "message": "Introduce compat_u64 and compat_s64 types\n\nOne common problem with 32 bit system call and ioctl emulation is the\ndifferent alignment rules between i386 and 64 bit machines.  A number of\ndrivers work around this by marking the compat structures as\n\u0027attribute((packed))\u0027, which is not the right solution because it breaks\nall the non-x86 architectures that want to use the same compat code.\n\nHopefully, this patch improves the situation, it introduces two new types,\ncompat_u64 and compat_s64. It is 100% reproducible.\n\nI debugged this problem a bit and my compiler[1]interprets the \u003dA constraint\nas %rax instead of %edx:%eax on x86_64 which causes the problem.       "message": "Use the APIC to determine the hardware processor id - x86_64\n\nhard_smp_processor_id used to be just a macro that hard-coded\nhard_smp_processor_id to 0 in the non SMP case.       "message": "x86: create asm/cmpxchg.h\n\ni386:\n\n  Rearrange the cmpxchg code to allow atomic.h to get it without needing to\n  include system.h.  This kills warnings in the UML build from atomic.h about\n  implicit declarations of cmpxchg symbols. Therefore, it makes\nsense to use inline functions that will provide type checking.\n\natomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency.\nDigging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by\nsuch a circular dependency.       "message": "kdump/kexec: calculate note size at compile time\n\nCurrently the size of the per-cpu region reserved to save crash notes is\nset by the per-architecture value MAX_NOTE_BYTES.  Which in turn is\ncurrently set to 1024 on all supported architectures.\n\nWhile testing ia64 I recently discovered that this value is in fact too\nsmall.  The particular setup I was using actually needs 1172 bytes.  This\nlead to very tedious failure mode where the tail of one elf note would\noverwrite the head of another if they ended up being alocated sequentially\nby kmalloc, which was often the case.\n\nIt seems to me that a far better approach is to caclculate the size that\nthe area needs to be.  This patch does just that.\n\nIf a simpler stop-gap patch for ia64 to be squeezed into 2.6.21(.X) is\nneeded then this should be as easy as making MAX_NOTE_BYTES larger in\narch/asm-ia64/kexec.h.  Perhaps 2048 would be a good choice. Rather than\nseparate __pa() and __pa_symbol(), we should deprecate __pa_symbol(),\nand preferably __pa() too - and just use \"virt_to_phys()\" instead, which\nis more readable and has nicer semantics.\n\nHowever, right now, just undo the separation, and make __pa_symbol() be\nthe exact same as __pa().  That fixes the bugs this patch introduced,\nand we can do the fairly obvious cleanups later.\n\nDo the new __phys_addr() function (which is now the actual workhorse for\nthe unified __pa()/__pa_symbol()) as a real external function, that way\nall the potential issues with compile/link-time optimizations of\nconstant symbol addresses go away, and we can also, if we choose to, add\nmore sanity-checking of the argument.\n\nCc: Eric W.       "message": "[PATCH] x86-64: safe_apic_wait_icr_idle - x86_64\n\napic_wait_icr_idle looks like this:\n\nstatic __inline__ void apic_wait_icr_idle(void)\n{\n  while (apic_read(APIC_ICR) \u0026 APIC_ICR_BUSY)\n    cpu_relax();\n}\n\nThe busy loop in this function would not be problematic if the\ncorresponding status bit in the ICR were always updated, but that does\nnot seem to be the case under certain crash scenarios. Kdump uses an IPI\nto stop the other CPUs in the event of a crash, but when any of the\nother CPUs are locked-up inside the NMI handler the CPU that sends the\nIPI will end up looping forever in the ICR check, effectively\nhard-locking the whole system.\n\nQuoting from Intel\u0027s \"MultiProcessor Specification\" (Version 1.4), B-3:\n\n\"A local APIC unit indicates successful dispatch of an IPI by\nresetting the Delivery Status bit in the Interrupt Command\nRegister (ICR). The operating system polls the delivery status\nbit after sending an INIT or STARTUP IPI until the command has\nbeen dispatched.\n\nA period of 20 microseconds should be sufficient for IPI dispatch\nto complete under normal operating conditions. If the IPI is not\nsuccessfully dispatched, the operating system can abort the\ncommand. Alternatively, the operating system can retry the IPI by\nwriting the lower 32-bit double word of the ICR.
