But freezing is more of an fs thing, and doesn\u0027t\nreally have much to do with the bdev at all, all the work gets done with the\nsuper. In btrfs we do not populate s_bdev, since we can have multiple bdev\u0027s\nfor one fs and setting s_bdev makes removing devices from a pool kind of tricky.\nThis means that freezing a btrfs filesystem fails, which causes us to corrupt\nwith things like tux-on-ice which use the fsfreeze mechanism. So instead of\npopulating sb-\u003es_bdev with a random bdev in our pool, I\u0027ve broken the actual fs\nfreezing stuff into freeze_super and thaw_super. These just take the\nsuper_block that we\u0027re freezing and does the appropriate work. It\u0027s basically\njust copy and pasted from freeze_bdev. I\u0027ve then converted freeze_bdev over to\nuse the new super helpers. I\u0027ve tested this with ext4 and btrfs and verified\neverything continues to work the same as before.\n\nThe only new gotcha is multiple calls to the fsfreeze ioctl will return EBUSY if\nthe fs is already frozen. I thought this was a better solution than adding a\nfreeze counter to the super_block, but if everybody hates this idea I\u0027m open to\nsuggestions. However this has a\ncomplication.\nBetween the call\n __blkdev_get-\u003eget_gendisk-\u003ekobj_lookup-\u003emd_probe\nand the call\n __blkdev_get-\u003emd_open\n\nthere is no obvious way to hold a reference on the mddev any more, so\nunless something is done, it will disappear and gendisk will be\ndestroyed prematurely.\n\nAlso, once we decide to destroy the mddev, there will be an unlockable\nmoment before the gendisk is unlinked (blk_unregister_region) during\nwhich a new reference to the gendisk can be created. We need to\nensure that this reference can not be used. i.e. the -\u003eopen must\nfail.\n\nSo:\n 1/ in md_probe we set a flag in the mddev (hold_active) which\n indicates that the array should be treated as active, even\n though there are no references, and no appearance of activity.\n This is cleared by md_release when the device is closed if it\n is no longer needed.\n This ensures that the gendisk will survive between md_probe and\n md_open.\n\n 2/ In md_open we check if the mddev we expect to open matches\n the gendisk that we did open.\n If there is a mismatch we return -ERESTARTSYS and modify\n __blkdev_get to retry from the top in that case.\n In the -ERESTARTSYS sys case we make sure to wait until\n the old gendisk (that we succeeded in opening) is really gone so\n we loop at most once.\n\nSome udev configurations will always open an md device when it first\nappears. If we allow an md device that was just created by an open\nto disappear on an immediate close, then this can race with such udev\nconfigurations and result in an infinite loop the device being opened\nand closed, then re-open due to the \u0027ADD\u0027 even from the first open,\nand then close and so on.\nSo we make sure an md device, once created by an open, remains active\nat least until some md \u0027ioctl\u0027 has been made on it. The callback is\nperformed before each freeing of an object.\n\nI would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually\nbefore the free. That also places the check near the code object\nmanipulation of the object.\n\nAlso the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was\ncompiled with SLAB debugging on. If there would be code in a constructor\nhandling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on\nSLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code. But there is no such code\nin the kernel. I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real\nuse of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the\nsame effect (i.e. add debug code before kfree).\n\nThere is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be\nclear in fs inode caches. Remove the pointless checks (they would even be\npointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors.\n\nThis is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support.
