However, as TX IRQ keeps\nworking, and the TX polling is now enabled, the driver miss-interprets the\nIRQ received later, hanging up the machine until a key is pressed at the\nserial console.\n\nThis is the 6 version of this patch. Previous versions were trying to\nintroduce a large enough delay between serial_outp and serial_in(up,\nUART_IIR), but not taking forever. However, the needed delay couldn\u0027t be\nsafely determined.\n\nAt the experimental tests, a delay of 1us solves most of the cases, but\nstill hangs sometimes. Increasing the delay to 5us was better, but still\ndoesn\u0027t solve. A very high delay of 50 ms seemed to work every time.\n\nHowever, poking around with delays and pray for it to be enough doesn\u0027t\nseem to be a good approach, even for a quirk.\n\nSo, instead of This is\ndue to the hardirq_count being a mask that can hold NR_IRQS.\n\nSome archs allow for over 16000 IRQs, and that would require a mask\nof 14 bits. The sofitrq mask is 8 bits and the preempt disable mask\nis also 8 bits. The PREEMP_ACTIVE bit is bit 30, and bit 31 would\nmake the preempt_count (which is type int) a negative number.\nA negative preempt_count is a sign of failure.\n\nAdd them up 14+8+8+1+1 you get 32 bits. No room for the NMI bit.\n\nBut the hardirq_count is to track the number of nested IRQs, not\nthe number of total IRQs. This originally took the paranoid approach\nof setting the max nesting to NR_IRQS. But when we have archs with\nover 1000 IRQs, it is not practical to think they will ever all\nnest on a single CPU. Not to mention that this would most definitely\ncause a stack overflow.\n\nThis patch sets a max of 10 bits to be used for IRQ nesting.\nI did a \u0027git grep HARDIRQ\u0027 to examine all users of HARDIRQ_BITS and\nHARDIRQ_MASK, and found that making it a max of 10 would not hurt\nanyone. I did find that the m68k expected it to be 8 bits, so\nI allow for the archs to set the number to be less than 10.\n\nI removed the setting of HARDIRQ_BITS from the archs that set it\nto more than 10. It keeps track of VMAs that\nshould be accounted for with VM_ACCOUNT and VMAs that never had a reserve\nwith VM_NORESERVE.\n\nOvercommit for hugetlbfs is much riskier than overcommit for base pages\ndue to contiguity requirements. It avoids overcommiting on both shared and\nprivate mappings using reservation counters that are checked and updated\nduring mmap(). This ensures (within limits) that hugepages exist in the\nfuture when faults occurs or it is too easy to applications to be SIGKILLed.\n\nAs hugetlbfs makes its own reservations of a different unit to the base page\nsize, VM_ACCOUNT should never be set. Even if the units were correct, we would\ndouble account for the usage in the core VM and hugetlbfs. VM_NORESERVE may\nbe set because an application can request no reserves be made for hugetlbfs\nat the risk of getting killed later.\n\nWith commit fc8744adc870a8d4366908221508bb113d8b72ee, VM_NORESERVE and\nVM_ACCOUNT are getting unconditionally set for hugetlbfs-backed mappings. This\nbreaks the accounting for both the core VM and hugetlbfs, can trigger an\nOOM storm when hugepage pools are too small lockups and corrupted counters\notherwise are used. When a writer crosses a page, it grabs a per cpu spinlock\nto protect against a reader. The spinlocks taken by a writer are not\nto protect against other writers, since a writer can only write to\nits own per cpu buffer. The spinlocks protect against readers that\ncan touch any cpu buffer. The writers are made to be reentrant\nwith the spinlocks disabling interrupts.\n\nThe problem arises when an NMI writes to the buffer, and that write\ncrosses a page boundary. If it grabs a spinlock, it can be racing\nwith another writer (since disabling interrupts does not protect\nagainst NMIs) or with a reader on the same CPU. Luckily, most of the\nusers are not reentrant and protects against this issue. But if a\nuser of the ring buffer becomes reentrant (which is what the ring\nbuffers do allow), if the NMI also writes to the ring buffer then\nwe risk the chance of a deadlock.\n\nThis patch moves the ftrace_nmi_enter called by nmi_enter() to the\nring buffer code. It replaces the current ftrace_nmi_enter that is\nused by arch specific code to arch_ftrace_nmi_enter and updates\nthe Kconfig to handle it.\n\nWhen an NMI is called, it will set a per cpu variable in the ring buffer\ncode and will clear it when the NMI exits. If a write to the ring buffer\ncrosses page boundaries inside an NMI, a trylock is used on the spin\nlock instead. If the spinlock fails to be acquired, then the entry\nis discarded.\n\nThis bug appeared in the ftrace work in the RT tree, where event tracing\nis reentrant.
