If the filler function fails, then\nthe problematic page is left attached to the pagecache (with appropriate flags\nset, one presumes) and the remaining to-be-attached pages are invalidated and\ndiscarded.       "message": "mlock: mlocked pages are unevictable\n\nMake sure that mlocked pages also live on the unevictable LRU, so kswapd\nwill not scan them over and over again.\n\nThis is achieved through various strategies:\n\n1) add yet another page flag--PG_mlocked--to indicate that\n   the page is locked for efficient testing in vmscan and,\n   optionally, fault path.  This allows early culling of\n   unevictable pages, preventing them from getting to\n   page_referenced()/try_to_unmap().  Also allows separate\n   accounting of mlock\u0027d pages, as Nick\u0027s original patch\n   did.\n\n   Note:  Nick\u0027s original mlock patch used a PG_mlocked\n   flag.  I had removed this in favor of the PG_unevictable\n   flag + an mlock_count [new page struct member].  I\n   restored the PG_mlocked flag to eliminate the new\n   count field.\n\n2) add the mlock/unevictable infrastructure to mm/mlock.c,\n   with internal APIs in mm/internal.h.  This is a rework\n   of Nick\u0027s original patch to these files, taking into\n   account that mlocked pages are now kept on unevictable\n   LRU list.\n\n3) update vmscan.c:page_evictable() to check PageMlocked()\n   and, if vma passed in, the vm_flags.  Note that the vma\n   will only be passed in for new pages in the fault path;\n   and then only if the \"cull unevictable pages in fault\n   path\" patch is included.\n\n4) add try_to_unlock() to rmap.c to walk a page\u0027s rmap and\n   ClearPageMlocked() if no other vmas have it mlocked.\n   Reuses as much of try_to_unmap() as possible.  This\n   effectively replaces the use of one of the lru list links\n   as an mlock count.  If this mechanism let\u0027s pages in mlocked\n   vmas leak through w/o PG_mlocked set [I don\u0027t know that it\n   does], we should catch them later in try_to_unmap().       "message": "Unevictable LRU Infrastructure\n\nWhen the system contains lots of mlocked or otherwise unevictable pages,\nthe pageout code (kswapd) can spend lots of time scanning over these\npages.  Worse still, the presence of lots of unevictable pages can confuse\nkswapd into thinking that more aggressive pageout modes are required,\nresulting in all kinds of bad behaviour.\n\nInfrastructure to manage pages excluded from reclaim--i.e., hidden from\nvmscan.  Based on a patch by Larry Woodman of Red Hat.  Reworked to\nmaintain \"unevictable\" pages on a separate per-zone LRU list, to \"hide\"\nthem from vmscan.\n\nKosaki Motohiro added the support for the memory controller unevictable\nlru list.\n\nPages on the unevictable list have both PG_unevictable and PG_lru set.\nThus, PG_unevictable is analogous to and mutually exclusive with\nPG_active--it specifies which LRU list the page is on.\n\nThe unevictable infrastructure is enabled by a new mm Kconfig option\n[CONFIG_]UNEVICTABLE_LRU.\n\nA new function \u0027page_evictable(page, vma)\u0027 in vmscan.c tests whether or\nnot a page may be evictable.  Subsequent patches will add the various\n!evictable tests.  We\u0027ll want to keep these tests light-weight for use in\nshrink_active_list() and, possibly, the fault path.\n\nTo avoid races between tasks putting pages [back] onto an LRU list and\ntasks that might be moving the page from non-evictable to evictable state,\nthe new function \u0027putback_lru_page()\u0027 -- inverse to \u0027isolate_lru_page()\u0027\n-- tests the \"evictability\" of a page after placing it on the LRU, before\ndropping the reference.  If the page has become unevictable,\nputback_lru_page() will redo the \u0027putback\u0027, thus moving the page to the\nunevictable list.       "message": "page-flags: record page flag overlays explicitly\n\nWith the recent page flag reorganisation we have a single enum which\ndefines the valid page flags and their values, nice and clear.  However\nthere are a number of bits which are overloaded by different subsystems.\nFirstly there is PG_owner_priv_1 which is used by filesystems and by XEN.\nSecondly both SLOB and SLUB use a couple of extra page bits to manage\ninternal state for pages they own; both overlay other bits.  All of these\n\"aliases\" are scattered about the source making it very hard for a reader\nto know if the bits are safe to rely on in all contexts; confusion here is\nbad.\n\nAs we now have a single place where the bits are clearly assigned it makes\nsense to clarify the reuse of bits by making the aliases explicit and\nvisible with the original bit assignments.  This patch creates explicit\naliases within the enum itself for the overloaded bits, creates standard\nbit accessors PageFoo etc.  and uses those throughout.\n\nThis version pulls the bit manipulation out to standard named page bit\naccessors as suggested by Christoph, it retains the explicit mapping to\nthe overlayed bits.  A fusion of both ideas.  This has been SLUB and SLOB\nhave been compile tested on x86_64 only, and SLUB boot tested.  If people\nfeel this is worth doing then I can run a fuller set of testing.\n\nThis patch:\n\nSome page flags are used for more than one purpose, for example\nPG_owner_priv_1.  Currently there are individual accessors for each user,\neach built using the common flag name far away from the bit definitions.\nThis makes it hard to see all possible uses of these bits.\n\nNow that we have a single enum to generate the bit orders it makes sense\nto express overlays in the same place. That is f.e.  important for virt_to_head_page() which is used in\nvarious critical code paths (kfree for example):\n\nCode for PageTail(page)\n\nBefore:\n\n mov    (%rdi),%rdx\t\tpage-\u003eflags\n mov    %rdx,%rax\t\t3 bytes\n and    $0x12000,%eax\t\t5 bytes\n cmp    $0x12000,%rax\t\t6 bytes\n je     897 \u003ckfree+0xa7\u003e\n\nAfter:\n\n mov    (%rdi),%rax\n test   $0x40,%ah\t\t\t(3 bytes)\n jne    887 \u003ckfree+0x97\u003e\n\nSo we go from 14 bytes to 3 bytes and from 3 instructions to one.  From the\nuse of 2 registers we go to none.\n\nWe can only use page flags for this if we have page flags available.       "message": "mm: fix PageUptodate data race\n\nAfter running SetPageUptodate, preceeding stores to the page contents to\nactually bring it uptodate may not be ordered with the store to set the\npage uptodate.\n\nTherefore, another CPU which checks PageUptodate is true, then reads the\npage contents can get stale data.\n\nFix this by having an smp_wmb before SetPageUptodate, and smp_rmb after\nPageUptodate.\n\nMany places that test PageUptodate, do so with the page locked, and this\nwould be enough to ensure memory ordering in those places if\nSetPageUptodate were only called while the page is locked.  Unfortunately\nthat is not always the case for some filesystems, but it could be an idea\nfor the future.\n\nAlso bring the handling of anonymous page uptodateness in line with that of\nfile backed page management, by marking anon pages as uptodate when they\n_are_ uptodate, rather than when our implementation requires that they be\nmarked as such.  Doing allows us to get rid of the smp_wmb\u0027s in the page\ncopying functions, which were especially added for anonymous pages for an\nanalogous memory ordering problem.  Both file and anonymous pages are\nhandled with the same barriers.\n\nFAQ:\nQ. Why not do this in flush_dcache_page?\nA. Firstly, flush_dcache_page handles only one side (the smb side) of the\nordering protocol; we\u0027d still need smp_rmb somewhere. Secondly, hiding away\nmemory barriers in a completely unrelated function is nasty; at least in the\nPageUptodate macros, they are located together with (half) the operations\ninvolved in the ordering. Thirdly, the smp_wmb is only required when first\nbringing the page uptodate, wheras flush_dcache_page should be called each time\nit is written to through the kernel mapping. It is logically the wrong place to\nput it.\n\nQ. Why does this increase my text size / reduce my performance / etc.\nA. Because it is adding the necessary instructions to eliminate the data-race.\n\nQ. Can it be improved?\nA. Yes, eg. if you were to create a rule that all SetPageUptodate operations\nrun under the page lock, we could avoid the smp_rmb places where PageUptodate\nis queried under the page lock. Requires audit of all filesystems and at least\nsome would need reworking.       "message": "[PATCH] zoned vm counters: create vmstat.c/.h from page_alloc.c/.h\n\nNOTE: ZVC are *not* the lightweight event counters.  ZVCs are reliable whereas\nevent counters do not need to be.\n\nZone based VM statistics are necessary to be able to determine what the state\nof memory in one zone is.  In a NUMA system this can be helpful for local\nreclaim and other memory optimizations that may be able to shift VM load in\norder to get more balanced memory use.\n\nIt is also useful to know how the computing load affects the memory\nallocations on various zones.  This patchset allows the retrieval of that data\nfrom userspace.\n\nThe patchset introduces a framework for counters that is a cross between the\nexisting page_stats --which are simply global counters split per cpu-- and the\napproach of deferred incremental updates implemented for nr_pagecache.\n\nSmall per cpu 8 bit counters are added to struct zone.  If the counter exceeds\ncertain thresholds then the counters are accumulated in an array of\natomic_long in the zone and in a global array that sums up all zone values.\nThe small 8 bit counters are next to the per cpu page pointers and so they\nwill be in high in the cpu cache when pages are allocated and freed.\n\nAccess to VM counter information for a zone and for the whole machine is then\npossible by simply indexing an array (Thanks to Nick Piggin for pointing out\nthat approach).  The access to the total number of pages of various types does\nno longer require the summing up of all per cpu counters.\n\nBenefits of this patchset right now:\n\n- Ability for UP and SMP configuration to determine how memory\n  is balanced between the DMA, NORMAL and HIGHMEM zones.\n\n- loops over all processors are avoided in writeback and\n  reclaim paths. We can avoid caching the writeback information\n  because the needed information is directly accessible.\n\n- Special handling for nr_pagecache removed.\n\n- zone_reclaim_interval vanishes since VM stats can now determine\n  when it is worth to do local reclaim.\n\n- Fast inline per node page state determination.\n\n- Accurate counters in /sys/devices/system/node/node*/meminfo. Current\n  counters are counting simply which processor allocated a page somewhere\n  and guestimate based on that. So the counters were not useful to show\n  the actual distribution of page use on a specific zone.\n\n- The swap_prefetch patch requires per node statistics in order to\n  figure out when processors of a node can prefetch.
