      "message": "include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h\n\npercpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being\nincluded when building most .c files.  percpu.h includes slab.h which\nin turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files\nuniversally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.\n\npercpu.h -\u003e slab.h dependency is about to be removed.  Prepare for\nthis change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those\nheaders directly instead of assuming availability.  As this conversion\nneeds to touch large number of source files, the following script is\nused as the basis of conversion.\n\n  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py\n\nThe script does the followings.\n\n* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that\n  only the necessary includes are there.  ie. if only gfp is used,\n  gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.\n\n* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include\n  blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms\n  to its surrounding.  It\u0027s put in the include block which contains\n  core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -\n  alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there\n  doesn\u0027t seem to be any matching order.\n\n* If the script can\u0027t find a place to put a new include (mostly\n  because the file doesn\u0027t have fitting include block), it prints out\n  an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the\n  file.\n\nThe conversion was done in the following steps.\n\n1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly\n   over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h\n   and ~3000 slab.h inclusions.  The script emitted errors for ~400\n   files.\n\n2. Each error was manually checked.  Some didn\u0027t need the inclusion,\n   some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or\n   embedding .c file was more appropriate for others.  This step added\n   inclusions to around 150 files.\n\n3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits\n   from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.\n\n4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.\n   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab\n   APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.\n\n5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically\n   editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h\n   files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell.  Most gfp.h\n   inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually\n   wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros.  Each\n   slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as\n   necessary.\n\n6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.\n\n7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures\n   were fixed.       "message": "mm: change anon_vma linking to fix multi-process server scalability issue\n\nThe old anon_vma code can lead to scalability issues with heavily forking\nworkloads.  Specifically, each anon_vma will be shared between the parent\nprocess and all its child processes.\n\nIn a workload with 1000 child processes and a VMA with 1000 anonymous\npages per process that get COWed, this leads to a system with a million\nanonymous pages in the same anon_vma, each of which is mapped in just one\nof the 1000 processes.  However, the current rmap code needs to walk them\nall, leading to O(N) scanning complexity for each page.\n\nThis can result in systems where one CPU is walking the page tables of\n1000 processes in page_referenced_one, while all other CPUs are stuck on\nthe anon_vma lock.  This leads to catastrophic failure for a benchmark\nlike AIM7, where the total number of processes can reach in the tens of\nthousands.  Real workloads are still a factor 10 less process intensive\nthan AIM7, but they are catching up.\n\nThis patch changes the way anon_vmas and VMAs are linked, which allows us\nto associate multiple anon_vmas with a VMA.  At fork time, each child\nprocess gets its own anon_vmas, in which its COWed pages will be\ninstantiated.  The parents\u0027 anon_vma is also linked to the VMA, because\nnon-COWed pages could be present in any of the children.\n\nThis reduces rmap scanning complexity to O(1) for the pages of the 1000\nchild processes, with O(N) complexity for at most 1/N pages in the system.\n This reduces the average scanning cost in heavily forking workloads from\nO(N) to 2.\n\nThe only real complexity in this patch stems from the fact that linking a\nVMA to anon_vmas now involves memory allocations.  This means vma_adjust\ncan fail, if it needs to attach a VMA to anon_vma structures.  This in\nturn means error handling needs to be added to the calling functions.\n\nA second source of complexity is that, because there can be multiple\nanon_vmas, the anon_vma linking in vma_adjust can no longer be done under\n\"the\" anon_vma lock.  To prevent the rmap code from walking up an\nincomplete VMA, this patch introduces the VM_LOCK_RMAP VMA flag.  This bit\nflag uses the same slot as the NOMMU VM_MAPPED_COPY, with an ifdef in mm.h\nto make sure it is impossible to compile a kernel that needs both symbolic\nvalues for the same bitflag.\n\nSome test results:\n\nWithout the anon_vma changes, when AIM7 hits around 9.7k users (on a test\nbox with 16GB RAM and not quite enough IO), the system ends up running\n\u003e99% in system time, with every CPU on the same anon_vma lock in the\npageout code.\n\nWith these changes, AIM7 hits the cross-over point around 29.7k users.\nThis happens with ~99% IO wait time, there never seems to be any spike in\nsystem time. These areas occupy a contiguous region indexed\nby cpu number on contiguous memory model or are grouped by node on\ndiscontiguous memory model.\n\nAs allocation and initialization are done by the arch code, all that\nsetup_per_cpu_areas() needs to do is communicating the determined\nlayout to the percpu allocator.  This patch implements\nsetup_per_cpu_areas() for both contig and discontig memory models and\ndrops HAVE_LEGACY_PER_CPU_AREA.\n\nPlease note that for contig model, the allocation itself is modified\nonly to allocate for possible cpus instead of NR_CPUS. However, this doesn\u0027t\nguarantee that the area will be on the same node as cpu0 and the\npercpu area for cpu0 ends up very far away from percpu areas for other\ncpus which cause problems for congruent percpu allocator.\n\nThis patch makes percpu area initialization allocate percpu area for\ncpu0 like any other cpus and copy it from __cpu0_per_cpu which now\nresides in the __init area. These could cause\nfuture problems if other modules get loaded into that memory and cause\nan exception as we\u0027d see the wrong fixup.  The only case I know of is\nkvm-intel.ko (when CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE\u003dn).\n\nAmerigo fixed this long-standing FIXME in the x86 version, but this\npatch is more general.\n\nThis implements trim_init_extable(); most archs are simple since they\nuse the standard lib/extable.c sort code.       "message": "[IA64] fix the difference between node_mem_map and node_start_pfn\n\nmakedumpfile[1] cannot run on ia64 discontigmem kernel, because the member\nnode_mem_map of struct pgdat_list has invalid value.  This patch fixes it.\n\nnode_start_pfn shows the start pfn of each node, and node_mem_map should\npoint \u0027struct page\u0027 of each node\u0027s node_start_pfn.  On my machine, node0\u0027s\nnode_start_pfn shows 0x400 and its node_mem_map points 0xa0007fffbf000000.\n This address is the same as vmem_map, so the node_mem_map points \u0027struct\npage\u0027 of pfn 0, even if its node_start_pfn shows 0x400.\n\nThe cause is due to the round down of min_pfn in count_node_pages() and\nnode0\u0027s node_mem_map points \u0027struct page\u0027 of inactive pfn (0x0).       "message": "[IA64] Ensure cpu0 can access per-cpu variables in early boot code\n\nia64 handles per-cpu variables a litle differently from other architectures\nin that it maps the physical memory allocated for each cpu at a constant\nvirtual address (0xffffffffffff0000). This mapping is not enabled until\nthe architecture specific cpu_init() function is run, which causes problems\nsince some generic code is run before this point.       "message": "GRU Driver: hardware data structures\n\nThis series of patches adds a driver for the SGI UV GRU.  The driver is\nstill in development but it currently compiles for both x86_64 \u0026 IA64.\nAll simple regression tests pass on IA64.  Although features remain to be\nadded, I\u0027d like to start the process of getting the driver into the\nkernel.  Additional kernel drivers will depend on services provide by the\nGRU driver.\n\nThe GRU is a hardware resource located in the system chipset.  The GRU\ncontains memory that is mmaped into the user address space.  This memory\nis used to communicate with the GRU to perform functions such as\nload/store, scatter/gather, bcopy, AMOs, etc.  The GRU is directly\naccessed by user instructions using user virtual addresses.  GRU\ninstructions (ex., bcopy) use user virtual addresses for operands.\n\nThe GRU contains a large TLB that is functionally very similar to\nprocessor TLBs.  Because the external contains a TLB with user virtual\naddress, it requires callouts from the core VM system when certain types\nof changes are made to the process page tables.  There are several MMUOPS\npatches currently being discussed but none has been accepted into the\nkernel.       "message": "Add vmcoreinfo\n\nThis patch set frees the restriction that makedumpfile users should install a\nvmlinux file (including the debugging information) into each system.\n\nmakedumpfile command is the dump filtering feature for kdump.  It creates a\nsmall dumpfile by filtering unnecessary pages for the analysis.  To\ndistinguish unnecessary pages, it needs a vmlinux file including the debugging\ninformation.  These days, the debugging package becomes a huge file, and it is\nhard to install it into each system.\n\nTo solve the problem, kdump developers discussed it at lkml and kexec-ml.       "message": "Do not depend on MAX_ORDER when grouping pages by mobility\n\nCurrently mobility grouping works at the MAX_ORDER_NR_PAGES level.  This makes\nsense for the majority of users where this is also the huge page size.\nHowever, on platforms like ia64 where the huge page size is runtime\nconfigurable it is desirable to group at a lower order.  On x86_64 and\noccasionally on x86, the hugepage size may not always be MAX_ORDER_NR_PAGES.\n\nThis patch groups pages together based on the value of HUGETLB_PAGE_ORDER.  It\nuses a compile-time constant if possible and a variable where the huge page\nsize is runtime configurable.\n\nIt is assumed that grouping should be done at the lowest sensible order and\nthat the user would not want to override this.  If this is not true,\npage_block order could be forced to a variable initialised via a boot-time\nkernel parameter.\n\nOne potential issue with this patch is that IA64 now parses hugepagesz with\nearly_param() instead of __setup().  __setup() is called after the memory\nallocator has been initialised and the pageblock bitmaps already setup.       "message": "hugepage: fix broken check for offset alignment in hugepage mappings\n\nFor hugepage mappings, the file offset, like the address and size, needs to\nbe aligned to the size of a hugepage.\n\nIn commit 68589bc353037f233fe510ad9ff432338c95db66, the check for this was\nmoved into prepare_hugepage_range() along with the address and size checks.\n But since BenH\u0027s rework of the get_unmapped_area() paths leading up to\ncommit 4b1d89290b62bb2db476c94c82cf7442aab440c8, prepare_hugepage_range()\nis only called for MAP_FIXED mappings, not for other mappings.  This means\nwe\u0027re no longer ever checking for an aligned offset - I\u0027ve confirmed that\nmmap() will (apparently) succeed with a misaligned offset on both powerpc\nand i386 at least.\n\nThis patch restores the check, removing it from prepare_hugepage_range()\nand putting it back into hugetlbfs_file_mmap().
