      "message": "[PATCH] panic_on_oops: remove ssleep()\n\nThis patch is part of an effort to unify the panic_on_oops behaviour across\nall architectures that implement it.\n\nIt was pointed out to me by Andi Kleen that if an oops has occured in\ninterrupt context, then calling sleep() in the oops path will only cause a\npanic, and that it would be really better for it not to be in the path at\nall.\n\nThis patch removes the ssleep() call and reworks the console message\naccordinly.       "message": "[PATCH] genirq: rename desc-\u003ehandler to desc-\u003echip\n\nThis patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding\nvarious abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing\nfunctionality.\n\nWhile the queue can be best described as \"fix and improve everything in the\ngeneric IRQ layer that we could think of\", and thus it consists of many\nsmaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is\nthe new \u0027irq chip\u0027 abstraction.\n\nThe irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller\ndriver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a\nstraightforward way, without having to think about \"IRQ flow\"\n(level/edge/etc.) type of details.\n\nThis stands in contrast with the current \u0027irq-type\u0027 model of genirq\narchitectures, which \u0027mixes\u0027 raw hardware capabilities with \u0027flow\u0027 details.\nThe patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and\nconverts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design.\n\nAs a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers\n(master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well.\n\nThe end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code\nand more consolidation between architectures.\n\nWe reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King\u0027s ARM IRQ\nlayer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset.\n\nThis patch:\n\nrename desc-\u003ehandler to desc-\u003echip.\n\nOriginally i did not want to do this, because it\u0027s a big patch.  But having\nboth \"desc-\u003ehandler\", \"desc-\u003ehandle_irq\" and \"action-\u003ehandler\" caused a\nlarge degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it\ntruly is.\n\nI have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a\ndesc-\u003echip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke\nfrequently.\n\nSo lets get over with this quickly.       "message": "[PATCH] zlib_inflate: Upgrade library code to a recent version\n\nUpgrade the zlib_inflate implementation in the kernel from a patched\nversion 1.1.3/4 to a patched 1.2.3.\n\nThe code in the kernel is about seven years old and I noticed that the\nexternal zlib library\u0027s inflate performance was significantly faster (~50%)\nthan the code in the kernel on ARM (and faster again on x86_32).\n\nFor comparison the newer deflate code is 20% slower on ARM and 50% slower\non x86_32 but gives an approx 1% compression ratio improvement.  I don\u0027t\nconsider this to be an improvement for kernel use so have no plans to\nchange the zlib_deflate code.\n\nVarious changes have been made to the zlib code in the kernel, the most\nsignificant being the extra functions/flush option used by ppp_deflate.\nThis update reimplements the features PPP needs to ensure it continues to\nwork.\n\nThis code has been tested on ARM under both JFFS2 (with zlib compression\nenabled) and ppp_deflate and on x86_32.  JFFS2 sees an approx.  10% real\nworld file read speed improvement.\n\nThis patch also removes ZLIB_VERSION as it no longer has a correct value.\nWe don\u0027t need version checks anyway as the kernel\u0027s module handling will\ntake care of that for us.       "message": "[PATCH] Notifier chain update: API changes\n\nThe kernel\u0027s implementation of notifier chains is unsafe.  There is no\nprotection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the\nchain is in use.  The issues were discussed in this thread:\n\n    http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l\u003dlinux-kernel\u0026m\u003d113018709002036\u0026w\u003d2\n\nWe noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage\nclasses:\n\n\t\"Blocking\" chains are always called from a process context\n\tand the callout routines are allowed to sleep;\n\n\t\"Atomic\" chains can be called from an atomic context and\n\tthe callout routines are not allowed to sleep.\n\nWe decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API.  Therefore\nthis set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking\nnotifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for \"raw\" notifiers (which is\nreally just the old API under a new name).  New kinds of data structures are\nused for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for\nregistration, unregistration, and calling a chain.  The three APIs are\nexplained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in\nkernel/sys.c.\n\nWith atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain\nlinks will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by\nentries being added or removed.  For raw chains the implementation provides no\nguarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections.  (The\nidea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and\nblocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to\nhandle these things in their own way.)\n\nThere are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with.  For\natomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in\na process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem.  Also, a\ncallout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister\nentries on its own chain.  (This did happen in a couple of places and the code\nhad to be changed to avoid it.)\n\nSince atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use\nspinlocks for synchronization.  Instead we use RCU.  The overhead falls almost\nentirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much\nless frequent that calling a chain.\n\nHere is the list of chains that we adjusted and their classifications.       "message": "[PATCH] sched: disable preempt in idle tasks\n\nRun idle threads with preempt disabled.\n\nAlso corrected a bugs in arm26\u0027s cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()).\nHow did it ever work before?\n\nMight fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted.\n\nWe think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking\nneed_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined.\n\nAfter calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and\ninto the idle thread and goes to sleep.       "message": "[PATCH] fix missing includes\n\nI recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of\nsched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h\nfrom module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h\nby ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after\nthis disentangling (patch to follow later).\nHowever, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.\n\nIn order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as\npossible, I\u0027ve split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for\ni386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real\npatch.  This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only\nadding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other.  So if any\nhunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. I\u0027ve written a\nprogram to test the behavior of how this flag affects signals and had\nseveral reports from people who ran this on various Unix boxes,\nconfirming that Linux seems to be unique on the way this is handled.\n\nThe way NODEFER affects signals on other Unix boxes is as follows:\n\n1) If NODEFER is set, other signals in sa_mask are still blocked.\n\n2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal is\nstill blocked. (Note: this is the behavior of all tested but Linux _and_\nNetBSD 2.0 *).\n\nThe way NODEFER affects signals on Linux:\n\n1) If NODEFER is set, other signals are _not_ blocked regardless of\nsa_mask (Even NetBSD doesn\u0027t do this).\n\n2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal being\nhandled is not blocked.\n\nThe patch converts signal handling in all current Linux architectures to\nthe way most Unix boxes work.\n\nUnix boxes that were tested:  DU4, AIX 5.2, Irix 6.5, NetBSD 2.0, SFU\n3.5 on WinXP, AIX 5.3, Mac OSX, and of course Linux 2.6.13-rcX.\n\n* NetBSD was the only other Unix to behave like Linux on point #2. The\nmain concern was brought up by point #1 which even NetBSD isn\u0027t like\nLinux.
