      "message": "ACPI, intel_idle: Cleanup idle\u003d internal variables\n\nHaving four variables for the same thing:\n  idle_halt, idle_nomwait, force_mwait and boot_option_idle_overrides\nis rather confusing and unnecessary complex.\n\nif idle\u003d boot param is passed, only set up one variable:\nboot_option_idle_overrides\n\nIntroduces following functional changes/fixes:\n  - intel_idle driver does not register if any idle\u003dxy\n    boot param is passed.\n  - processor_idle.c will also not register a cpuidle driver\n    and get active if idle\u003dhalt is passed.\n    Before a cpuidle driver with one (C1, halt) state got registered\n    Now the default_idle function will be used which finally uses\n    the same idle call to enter sleep state (safe_halt()), but\n    without registering a whole cpuidle driver.\n\nThat means idle\u003d param will always avoid cpuidle drivers to register\nwith one exception (same behavior as before):\nidle\u003dnomwait\nmay still register acpi_idle cpuidle driver, but C1 will not use\nmwait, but hlt.       "message": "fs: scale mntget/mntput\n\nThe problem that this patch aims to fix is vfsmount refcounting scalability.\nWe need to take a reference on the vfsmount for every successful path lookup,\nwhich often go to the same mount point.\n\nThe fundamental difficulty is that a \"simple\" reference count can never be made\nscalable, because any time a reference is dropped, we must check whether that\nwas the last reference. To do that requires communication with all other CPUs\nthat may have taken a reference count.\n\nWe can make refcounts more scalable in a couple of ways, involving keeping\ndistributed counters, and checking for the global-zero condition less\nfrequently.\n\n- check the global sum once every interval (this will delay zero detection\n  for some interval, so it\u0027s probably a showstopper for vfsmounts).\n\n- keep a local count and only taking the global sum when local reaches 0 (this\n  is difficult for vfsmounts, because we can\u0027t hold preempt off for the life of\n  a reference, so a counter would need to be per-thread or tied strongly to a\n  particular CPU which requires more locking).\n\n- keep a local difference of increments and decrements, which allows us to sum\n  the total difference and hence find the refcount when summing all CPUs. Then,\n  keep a single integer \"long\" refcount for slow and long lasting references,\n  and only take the global sum of local counters when the long refcount is 0.\n\nThis last scheme is what I implemented here. Attached mounts and process root\nand working directory references are \"long\" references, and everything else is\na short reference.\n\nThis allows scalable vfsmount references during path walking over mounted\nsubtrees and unattached (lazy umounted) mounts with processes still running\nin them.\n\nThis results in one fewer atomic op in the fastpath: mntget is now just a\nper-CPU inc, rather than an atomic inc; and mntput just requires a spinlock\nand non-atomic decrement in the common case.       "message": "llseek: automatically add .llseek fop\n\nAll file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make\nnonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a\n.llseek pointer.\n\nThe three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek\nand default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that\nthe file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains\nthe current behavior of not returning an error from a seek.\n\nNew drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek\nand call nonseekable_open at open time.  Existing drivers can be converted\nto do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code\nrelies on calling seek on the device file.\n\nThe generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains\ncomments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was\nchosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will\nbe gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not\nseem to be a way to do that using coccinelle.\n\nSome amount of       "message": "[IA64] fix siglock\n\nWhen ia64 converted to using ticket locks, an inline implementation\nof trylock/unlock in fsys.S was missed.  This was not noticed because\nin most circumstances it simply resulted in using the slow path because\nthe siglock was apparently not available (under old spinlock rules).\n\nProblems occur when the ticket spinlock has value 0x0 (when first\ninitialised, or when it wraps around). At this point the fsys.S\ncode acquires the lock (changing the 0x0 to 0x1. If another process\nattempts to get the lock at this point, it will change the value from\n0x1 to 0x2 (using new ticket lock rules).       "message": "Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer\n\nMake do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles\ncorrectly on ARM:\n\narch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of \u0027do_execve\u0027 discards qualifiers from pointer target type\n\nThis also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for\nthe pointer array and once for the strings the array points to.  This is\nbecause do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to\ncopy_strings_kernel(). As this conversion\nneeds to touch large number of source files, the following script is\nused as the basis of conversion.\n\n  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py\n\nThe script does the followings.\n\n* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that\n  only the necessary includes are there.  ie. if only gfp is used,\n  gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.\n\n* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include\n  blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms\n  to its surrounding.  It\u0027s put in the include block which contains\n  core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -\n  alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there\n  doesn\u0027t seem to be any matching order.\n\n* If the script can\u0027t find a place to put a new include (mostly\n  because the file doesn\u0027t have fitting include block), it prints out\n  an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the\n  file.\n\nThe conversion was done in the following steps.\n\n1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly\n   over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h\n   and ~3000 slab.h inclusions.  The script emitted errors for ~400\n   files.\n\n2. Each error was manually checked.  Some didn\u0027t need the inclusion,\n   some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or\n   embedding .c file was more appropriate for others.  This step added\n   inclusions to around 150 files.\n\n3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits\n   from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.\n\n4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.\n   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab\n   APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.\n\n5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically\n   editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h\n   files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell.  Most gfp.h\n   inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually\n   wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros.  Each\n   slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as\n   necessary.\n\n6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.\n\n7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures\n   were fixed.       "message": "mm: change anon_vma linking to fix multi-process server scalability issue\n\nThe old anon_vma code can lead to scalability issues with heavily forking\nworkloads.  Specifically, each anon_vma will be shared between the parent\nprocess and all its child processes.\n\nIn a workload with 1000 child processes and a VMA with 1000 anonymous\npages per process that get COWed, this leads to a system with a million\nanonymous pages in the same anon_vma, each of which is mapped in just one\nof the 1000 processes.  However, the current rmap code needs to walk them\nall, leading to O(N) scanning complexity for each page.\n\nThis can result in systems where one CPU is walking the page tables of\n1000 processes in page_referenced_one, while all other CPUs are stuck on\nthe anon_vma lock.  This leads to catastrophic failure for a benchmark\nlike AIM7, where the total number of processes can reach in the tens of\nthousands.  Real workloads are still a factor 10 less process intensive\nthan AIM7, but they are catching up.\n\nThis patch changes the way anon_vmas and VMAs are linked, which allows us\nto associate multiple anon_vmas with a VMA.  At fork time, each child\nprocess gets its own anon_vmas, in which its COWed pages will be\ninstantiated.  The parents\u0027 anon_vma is also linked to the VMA, because\nnon-COWed pages could be present in any of the children.\n\nThis reduces rmap scanning complexity to O(1) for the pages of the 1000\nchild processes, with O(N) complexity for at most 1/N pages in the system.\n This reduces the average scanning cost in heavily forking workloads from\nO(N) to 2.\n\nThe only real complexity in this patch stems from the fact that linking a\nVMA to anon_vmas now involves memory allocations.  This means vma_adjust\ncan fail, if it needs to attach a VMA to anon_vma structures.  This in\nturn means error handling needs to be added to the calling functions.\n\nA second source of complexity is that, because there can be multiple\nanon_vmas, the anon_vma linking in vma_adjust can no longer be done under\n\"the\" anon_vma lock.  To prevent the rmap code from walking up an\nincomplete VMA, this patch introduces the VM_LOCK_RMAP VMA flag.  This bit\nflag uses the same slot as the NOMMU VM_MAPPED_COPY, with an ifdef in mm.h\nto make sure it is impossible to compile a kernel that needs both symbolic\nvalues for the same bitflag.\n\nSome test results:\n\nWithout the anon_vma changes, when AIM7 hits around 9.7k users (on a test\nbox with 16GB RAM and not quite enough IO), the system ends up running\n\u003e99% in system time, with every CPU on the same anon_vma lock in the\npageout code.\n\nWith these changes, AIM7 hits the cross-over point around 29.7k users.\nThis happens with ~99% IO wait time, there never seems to be any spike in\nsystem time. Unfortunately, the ia64_simdefconfig does\nnot turn on CONFIG_ACPI, and we get build errors.\n\nThe fix described in $subject seems to be the most sensible way to\nuntangle the mess.\n\nThe other issue is that acpi_get_sysname() is required for all configs,\nmost of which define CONFIG_ACPI, but are not CONFIG_IA64_GENERIC.
