      "message": "irq: Remove IRQ_EXIT_OFFSET workaround\n\nThe IRQ_EXIT_OFFSET trick was used to make sure the irq\ndoesn\u0027t get preempted after we substract the HARDIRQ_OFFSET\nuntil we are entirely done with any code in irq_exit().\n\nThis workaround was necessary because some archs may call\nirq_exit() with irqs enabled and there is still some code\nin the end of this function that is not covered by the\nHARDIRQ_OFFSET but want to stay non-preemptible.\n\nNow that irq are always disabled in irq_exit(), the whole code\nis guaranteed not to be preempted. This time\ndifference is not taken into account when ntp updates the hardware clock,\nand this causes the system time to jump forward by this offset every reboot.\n\nThe kernel must take this offset into account when writing the system time\nto the hardware clock in the ntp code.  This patch adds\npersistent_clock_is_local which indicates that an offset has been applied\nin warp_clock() and accounts for the \"warp\" before writing the hardware\nclock.\n\nx86 does not have this problem as rtc writes are software limited to a\n+/-15 minute window relative to the current rtc time. The HPPA (parisc)\narchitecture is similiar to other 64bit Linux targets where we have to define\nautofs_wqt_t (which is passed back and forth to user space) as int type which\nhas a size of 32bit across 32 and 64bit kernels.\n\nDuring the discussion on the mailing list, H. Peter Anvin suggested to invert\nthe #if list since only specific platforms (specifically those who do not have\na 32bit userspace, like IA64 and Alpha) should have autofs_wqt_t as unsigned\nlong type.\n\nThis suggestion is probably the best way to go, since Arm64 (and maybe others?)\nseems to have a non-working automounter. It is not possible to add/remove a task (mm) after uprobe_register()\n\n2.       "message": "efi: Make \u0027efi_enabled\u0027 a function to query EFI facilities\n\nOriginally \u0027efi_enabled\u0027 indicated whether a kernel was booted from\nEFI firmware. Over time its semantics have changed, and it now\nindicates whether or not we are booted on an EFI machine with\nbit-native firmware, e.g. 64-bit kernel with 64-bit firmware.\n\nThe immediate motivation for this patch is the bug report at,\n\n    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/1040557\n\nwhich details how running a platform driver on an EFI machine that is\ndesigned to run under BIOS can cause the machine to become\nbricked. Also, the following report,\n\n    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id\u003d47121\n\ndetails how running said driver can also cause Machine Check\nExceptions. Drivers need a new means of detecting whether they\u0027re\nrunning on an EFI machine, as sadly the expression,\n\n    if (!efi_enabled)\n\nhasn\u0027t been a sufficient condition for quite some time.\n\nUsers actually want to query \u0027efi_enabled\u0027 for different reasons -\nwhat they really want access to is the list of available EFI\nfacilities.\n\nFor instance, the x86 reboot code needs to know whether it can invoke\nthe ResetSystem() function provided by the EFI runtime services, while\nthe ACPI OSL code wants to know whether the EFI config tables were\nmapped successfully. But we already\nhave a generic context tracking subsystem that is required\nfor RCU needs by archs which plan to shut down the tick\noutside idle.\n\nThis patch implements a generic virtual based cputime\naccounting that relies on these generic kernel/user hooks.\n\nThere are some upsides of doing this:\n\n- This requires no arch code to implement CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING\nif context tracking is already built (already necessary for RCU in full\ntickless mode).\n\n- We can rely on the generic context tracking subsystem to dynamically\n(de)activate the hooks, so that we can switch anytime between virtual\nand tick based accounting. This way we don\u0027t have the overhead\nof the virtual accounting when the tick is running periodically.\n\nAnd one downside:\n\n- There is probably more overhead than a native virtual based cputime\naccounting.       "message": "USB: add usb_hcd_{start,end}_port_resume\n\nThis patch (as1649) adds a mechanism for host controller drivers to\ninform usbcore when they have begun or ended resume signalling on a\nparticular root-hub port.  The core will then make sure that the root\nhub does not get runtime-suspended while the port resume is going on.\n\nSince commit 596d789a211d134dc5f94d1e5957248c204ef850 (USB: set hub\u0027s\ndefault autosuspend delay as 0), the system tries to suspend hubs\nwhenever they aren\u0027t in use.  While a root-hub port is being resumed,\nthe root hub does not appear to be in use.  Attempted runtime suspends\nfail because of the ongoing port resume, but the PM core just keeps on\ntrying over and over again.       "message": "sched/rt: Avoid updating RT entry timeout twice within one tick period\n\nThe issue below was found in 2.6.34-rt rather than mainline rt\nkernel, but the issue still exists upstream as well.\n\nSo please let me describe how it was noticed on 2.6.34-rt:\n\nOn this version, each softirq has its own thread, it means there\nis at least one RT FIFO task per cpu. The priority of these\ntasks is set to 49 by default. If user launches an RT FIFO task\nwith priority lower than 49 of softirq RT tasks, it\u0027s possible\nthere are two RT FIFO tasks enqueued one cpu runqueue at one\nmoment. By current strategy of balancing RT tasks, when it comes\nto RT tasks, we really need to put them off to a CPU that they\ncan run on as soon as possible. Even if it means a bit of cache\nline flushing, we want RT tasks to be run with the least latency.\n\nWhen the user RT FIFO task which just launched before is\nrunning, the sched timer tick of the current cpu happens. In this\ntick period, the timeout value of the user RT task will be\nupdated once. Subsequently, we try to wake up one softirq RT\ntask on its local cpu. As the priority of current user RT task\nis lower than the softirq RT task, the current task will be\npreempted by the higher priority softirq RT task. Before\npreemption, we check to see if current can readily move to a\ndifferent cpu. If so, we will reschedule to allow the RT push logic\nto try to move current somewhere else. Whenever the woken\nsoftirq RT task runs, it first tries to migrate the user FIFO RT\ntask over to a cpu that is running a task of lesser priority. If\nmigration is done, it will send a reschedule request to the found\ncpu by IPI interrupt. Once the target cpu responds the IPI\ninterrupt, it will pick the migrated user RT task to preempt its\ncurrent task. When the user RT task is running on the new cpu,\nthe sched timer tick of the cpu fires. So it will tick the user\nRT task again. This also means the RT task timeout value will be\nupdated again. As the migration may be done in one tick period,\nit means the user RT task timeout value will be updated twice\nwithin one tick.\n\nIf we set a limit on the amount of cpu time for the user RT task\nby setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTTIME), the SIGXCPU signal should be posted\nupon reaching the soft limit.\n\nBut exactly when the SIGXCPU signal should be sent depends on the\nRT task timeout value. In fact the timeout mechanism of sending\nthe SIGXCPU signal assumes the RT task timeout is increased once\nevery tick.\n\nHowever, currently the timeout value may be added twice per\ntick. So it results in the SIGXCPU signal being sent earlier\nthan expected.\n\nTo solve this issue, we prevent the timeout value from increasing\ntwice within one tick time by remembering the jiffies value of\nlast updating the timeout.       "message": "tracing: Remove the extra 4 bytes of padding in events\n\nDue to a userspace issue with PowerTop v2beta, which hardcoded\nthe offset of event fields that it was using, it broke when\nwe removed the Big Kernel Lock counter from the event header.\n\n (commit e6e1e2593 \"tracing: Remove lock_depth from event entry\")\n\nBecause this broke userspace, it was determined that we must\nkeep those 4 bytes around.\n\n (commit a3a4a5acd \"Regression: partial revert \"tracing: Remove lock_depth from event entry\"\")\n\nThis unfortunately wastes space in the ring buffer. 4 bytes per\nevent, where a lot of events are just 24 bytes. That\u0027s 16% of the\nbuffer wasted. A million events will add 4 megs of white space\ninto the buffer.\n\nIt was later noticed that PowerTop v2beta could not work on systems\nwhere the kernel was 64 bit but the userspace was 32 bits.\nThe reason was because the offsets are different between the\ntwo and the hard coded offset of one would not work with the other.\n\nWith PowerTop v2 final, it implemented the same interface that both\nperf and trace-cmd use. That is, it reads the format file of\nthe event to find the offsets of the fields it needs. This fixes\nthe problem with running powertop on a 32 bit userspace running\non a 64 bit kernel. It also no longer requires the 4 byte padding.\n\nAs PowerTop v2 has been out for a while, and is included in all\nmajor distributions, it is time that we can safely remove the\n4 bytes of padding. The UART_CAP_HFIFO\ncapability was added to track this.       "message": "module, async: async_synchronize_full() on module init iff async is used\n\nIf the default iosched is built as module, the kernel may deadlock\nwhile trying to load the iosched module on device probe if the probing\nwas running off async.  This is because async_synchronize_full() at\nthe end of module init ends up waiting for the async job which\ninitiated the module loading.\n\n async A\t\t\t\tmodprobe\n\n 1. finds a device\n 2. registers the block device\n 3. request_module(default iosched)\n\t\t\t\t\t4. modprobe in userland\n\t\t\t\t\t5. load and init module\n\t\t\t\t\t6. async_synchronize_full()\n\nAsync A waits for modprobe to finish in request_module() and modprobe\nwaits for async A to finish in async_synchronize_full().\n\nBecause there\u0027s no easy to track dependency once control goes out to\nuserland, implementing properly nested flushing is difficult.  For\nnow, make module init perform async_synchronize_full() iff module init\nhas queued async jobs as suggested by Linus.\n\nThis avoids the described deadlock because iosched module doesn\u0027t use\nasync and thus wouldn\u0027t invoke async_synchronize_full().  This is\nhacky and incomplete.       "message": "NTP: Add a CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC configuration\n\nThe purpose of this option is to allow ARM/etc systems that rely on the\nclass RTC subsystem to have the same kind of automatic NTP based\nsynchronization that we have on PC platforms. Today ARM does not\nimplement update_persistent_clock and makes extensive use of the class\nRTC system.\n\nWhen enabled CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC will provide a generic\nrtc_update_persistent_clock that stores the current time in the RTC and\nis intended complement the existing CONFIG_RTC_HCTOSYS option that loads\nthe RTC at boot.\n\nLike with RTC_HCTOSYS the platform\u0027s update_persistent_clock is used\nfirst, if it works. Platforms with mixed class RTC and non-RTC drivers\nneed to return ENODEV when class RTC should be used.
